personally, although all the chat is about defoe at the moment, I wouldn't be half interested in the other croatian, Niko Kranjčar.
he's proven regularly that he can play very well with modric in the middle of the pitch and on the left hand side of an attacking trio or a midfield thus helping to solve our problem there. he'd have no problems adjusting to the english way of football or the english life.
of course, diarra and defoe would be accepted easily too. but think of it, we could be lining up like this:

Diarra
Bentley Modric Kranjcar
Pavlyuchenko Defoe
Cesar, Corluka, BAE, Lennon, Zokora, Jenas, Hudd, O'Hara, Gio, Bent (p.s. i'd bring taarabt and ghaly back)
