I agree. If Lloris is good enough to be on the bench then he should have started. So should have Sandro, Capoe and Lamela. Paulhino and Dembele need a rest and AVB seem to have a soft spot for Siggs...... or he probably has found his soft spot!.

Yeah but Siggy was scoring for us before. More than Townsend was. Surely his soft spot is for Townsend of all the players

It was more than frustrating it was abysmal
Again the opposition worked harder than we did

Sorry but Krul was not that great. Nothing was outstanding, good but not outstanding

We were far too soft. They ran through us far too many times. Nobody was Sandro had to re dress the balance

Poor finishing is not confined to one game

Persistence with an approach that will not break down even poor defences. ( Spurs 1 Hull 0 dodgy penalty Soton 4 Hull 1 as an illustration.

Can't see boring teams to death is going to get us in top 4

Hull attacked Soton more and didn't sit back like they did to us. More open game, different tactics. Comparisons only work if the scenario is the same.

How do you get a Dislike rating for that? A disagree if you were wrong but a dislike? WTF?

BTW, Gomes was on the bench. So you weren't even wrong.

@dannythomas must be after you for some slight or has fat fingers on his phone

Haha yes, and I don't think this was fat finger syndrome as he also disliked the post I made immediately prior in the same thread where I asked @TaoistMonkey a simple question. Also if you notice the Gomes was on the bench was sent to @Bulletspur who replied 'I stand corrected' acknowledging that he hadn't realised that Gomes was on the bench and DT rated it 'spam'.

Haha must have been a bad day!

Yes there were so many frustrating things about today:

  • Townsend's shooting
  • No Lamela
  • The Defoe sub
  • Wrong team selection which wasted a sub
  • Our terrible first half
  • Krul
  • Poor finishing

Remove Krul from that list and to be honest you could be talking about almost every game this season.

I think there's something weird going on because I wouldn't have done that either. Going to check it out with the site administrators

I think it should be a bit of a mixed bag in terms of reaction to a very disappointing result.

On the one hand I think there should be some positivity around the fact that we created so many chances in the second half and if we do that for the rest of the season then we aren't going to lose the majority of games. Sometimes you just have to put your hands up and say that the opposition's keeper had a blinder and we were unlucky.

Also we're still only 5 points off the top, so all in all it hasn't been a complete disaster of a weekend (albeit that doesn't detract from our own poor result).

On the other hand there are a number of things that are now starting to become a worry.

Soldado's failure to get goals is a real issue, whether you blame that on him or not.

The lack of use of Lamela seems absolutely ridiculous considering his performance on Thursday. Really don't see how that helps him grow into this team at all.

The selection yesterday generally seemed a bit strange, and the substitutions even more so, and that is one thing where AVB can't hide behind any excuses.

Generally, I think after 11 games (plus the cup games) AVB is starting to lose the excuse that 'the team needs time to gel', and he'll certainly have to get things together relatively soon because the teams around us won't continue to fuck up for much longer. In addition, having had a pop at the crowd he'll now be under even more pressure to deliver, and results like that will start to get the crowd on his back quicker than normal.

Overall I just worry about what AVB's plan is generally. I'm hoping he's just been a bit scuppered through the large number of players he's having to gel together, but I don't know if we're really seeing enough improvement to use that argument at the moment. My concern is that following our games with the two Manchester clubs we could be quite far detached from those ahead of us, at which point I think questions will definitely need to be asked of AVB and co.

I will however wait to see what happens in those two games before entering the full-blown panic mode that seems to have gripped far too many fans.

Couldn't/can't really bring myself to take the positives from that performance. If it had been an isolated incident of lethargy and lack of creativity then I could dismiss it but this has happened in virtually every prem home game under AVB.

The decision to leave Lamela on the bench, and not even bring him on, was nothing short of a disgrace IMO. AVB is far too cautious, our football is turgid, ponderous, and soul destroying to watch.

Yesterday hurt more than West Ham for me. It was a clear sign that there are deep seat problems in the current set up that are rearing their head every other week. At this point I hold out very little hope for the rest of season. We won't finish top four, there are four teams who are streets ahead of us, and another, Man Utd who always finish ahead of us come what may. The way things are going we'll finish sixth, at best.

Whisper it quietly but I don't even think we were particularly good in the second half...

We created a few chances, maybe one proper clear-cut one (Eriksen), but Newcastle looked reasonably comfortable most of the time, and they're shit at the back. They just sat back after expelling plenty of energy in the first half to establish a lead, and occassionally tried to hit us on the break until Remy tired.

We looked better in the second half because Sandro went around winning all the tackles as soon as we lost the ball, giving the impression the whole team was snapping about putting in loads of effort to try and win. They weren't though, just Sandro was, as he was all we needed.

Maybe we should've played him from the start, huh? Along with some others...

Ultimately I thought we were:

1st Half - as shit as the 90's
2nd Half - better, maybe about as good as a Jol team

None of this 'we murdered them' stuff. We didn't. Most of Krul's saves were routine as everything was hit straight at him except Soldado's genius back-header.

Spot on. We carved them open once all game, the Soldado dummy that Eriksen fluffed. The rest were set pieces and the usual panic and shoot long range desperation.

I dont think its panic at all......its total frustration! You can see some of his ideas work and you can see the talent in the squad but the same mistakes are made week in week out and nothing changes. We lack bite, penetration. Plus we are getting turned over at home by teams we should be beating. This was a crucial game for banking 3 points before we hit serious competition.

This kid Chiriches has got to play. If Rose is back and we have Verts and Kaboul at CB, play him in mid-field. He is more threatening going forward then Dembele as he has the eye for forward passes and can be a goal threat with his heading and shooting abilities at set pieces. He reads the game so well and will be a massive protection for the back 4 as well.

Really?! Paulinho had a great chance too which he should have done better with, Soldado was unlucky with a good header from a set piece in the first half and missed a free header from a corner at 0-0. Yeah, Kaboul's big chance came from a deflected freekick but every side needs a bit of luck to fall their way every now and then. Look at Chelsea recently, they benefited from Ridgewell dithering on the ball and a dodgy penalty on Saturday, they benefited from awful defending against City and against Norwich, not every goal comes from brilliant play serving it up on a plate for the striker.

The result was really disappointing and so is our league position now but I think the criticism of not creating enough chances was addressed on Sunday. It wasn't an outstanding performance but it was much better and on another day we'd have scored 3 or 4. I don't think the usual criticism applies to the Newcastle game, there were even a few good crosses put in but Soldado wasn't anyway near them, which was his fault for not being sharp enough. The pressure's on though now, we're 7th in the league with 2 tough games coming up so AVB and the whole team need to start getting it right.
