What does Soldado do?

When we think that Defoe has struggled in the last couple of years since we switched to one striker, the idea of buying another small poacher is a bit baffling really.

He's already shown that he's better with his back to goal than Defoe, but it does seem that we're lacking the spark to get the best out of him at the moment.

Hopefully Lamela and Eriksen will help with that.

This is why i was never quick to judge our strikers last season. any striker playing in this system is going to struggle. defoe and adebayor were both just as isolated as soldado is. people were going on and on about how shit they were but no one ever passed to them or provided them with service.

one thing that will certainly help this problem: cutting out all the potshots. we take more shots from distance than just about any other team and its really really really really fucking annoying.

That is because our high defensive line and pressing game encourages teams to sit back and defend in depth; we shoot from distance because there isn’t the space to run at defenders or, for, our busy but rather limited midfielders, to thread through passes; so we rely on somone (it was usually Bale) scoring a worldly from outside the box.

it was widely reported he was available for £25m but if you know something to suggest otherwise then please share.
being widely reported doesn't make it true

VIlla had no desire or need to sell - he was on a long contract already and the fact they were instead offering him a new improved contract is enough for me to believe this widely reported availbility was bullshit and Villa had no intention of selling their prize asset (don't believe everything you read in The Sun)

It's early days but our inability to create anything like clear cut chances is still there and has been there for a few years now and Soldado is the type of striker that feeds off that service (dare I say, like Defoe).

I said at the time I thought Benteke would've been a better fit and we probably could've got him for the same money and I still think that is the case.

We need an injection of creativity and a shot up the arse for the likes of Dembele, Chadli, Paulinho, Walker, Rose etc to get anything like the best out of Soldado.

Why would Benteke be a better fit?

Someone mentioned it elsewhere, we could have Ronaldo or Messi upfront and it wouldn't make a difference at the moment.

I think Soldado has worked hard in all our games so far and held on to the ball well, and despite having very few goalscoring opportunities (penalties aside) I have huge confidence he will score if presented with a chance in the box.

I have not had that confidence in a Spurs striker since Klinsmann.

Bullshit, we could even have berbatov upfront and it would make a big difference

Yup. Fair play to Townsend who actually hits goal consistently and can create opportunities on rebounds, but when Walker sends his third attempt sky high or a deperate Chadli fires the ball miles wide ignoring mny well placed team mates... f***, I sit shouting at the tele.

As Shea says, he really reminds me of Lineker at times. Unfortunately we don't have a Gazza. Yet

Our decision making is still based off of having a Peter Crouch in the box: getting to the by-line and making percentage crosses, unless Paulinho is in there that is just a waste of possession cause Soldado is not gonna be winning headers against CB's 6 inches taller. I'd want to see us playing how arsenal did, quick, short passing and the inverted wingers getting more central with the CAM/ No 10 floating just outside the area.

He's an intelligent player but needs to be fed decent ball so he can work with it in and out of the box. You see him making runs but we haven't got players good enough to find him.
We need time for the players to work together and that includes bringing in a quality attacking central midfielder besides the young man Erikson. He'll be a big hitter when we understand how to play the ball into him.

It was widely reported that Higuain to the Goons was a done deal.

I believe the reason you are saying he was widely available for £25 m is because it was claimed he had a release clause to that value. It was widely reported that Liverpool had assured Suarez that they would listen to offers over £40 million, Arsen*l offered £40 million and a penny (or was it a pound) and Liverpool told them to do one. So far as I know I am not sure that any English club has ever actually used a release clause written into a contract. At the time, if I remember correctly, the story was that Villa were no being amenable and very much were asking for more than £25 million. Valencia needed to sell, and were amenable for that reason, Villa neither needed nor wanted to sell - playing silly beggars with the price while offering a new contract under these circumstances = player signs new contract. Maybe you should let it pass, or, at least, wait and see how Soldado performs in the middle to long term. More to the point, I would like to see a copy of a contract for Benteke prior to his new one stating that there was a £25 million release clause, and then we can start asking why Levy/Baldini would have refused to meet it.

Soldado is all about top class movement and finishing. Once we get the right players (Eriksen, Holtby, Lamela) in the team to provide him the sort of balls that he thrives on he will score a bucket load.

The old ways of running as fast as you can and firing in crosses into the box just won't cut it with Soldado, he needs the through balls to run onto. This is why I fully expect Lennon to leave and why I'm not worrying about Chadli's apparent lack of pace, we are moving from power and pace on the wings to a team with more strength through the middle and more guile in the final third, once that fully kicks in Soldado will flourish.

i read nothing about a release clause. you're doing it again, going off on some weird bizarro tangent to force other posters to surrender, every media outlet said villa will sell for £25m, that's all i have to go on. even sc's beloved jj jetset claimed the deal was done. benteke handed in a transfer request, villa told clubs £25m, we said we wouldn't pay, he signed a new deal. that's how it happened in my mind and that's what i believe. i'm disappointed we passed and signed soldado instead but i can't do anything about that. you don't like that opinion, fair enough, i'm still going to give it though.

What I love most about Soldado is that he doesn't just stand still but moves for the ball. His movement is excellent, his touch is superb and he has the hunger to win anything that comes into the box. He will find it frustrating early on while we start to find our feet and learn his movement. I think he will thrive mostly with through balls and crosses/pull backs.

Soldado's ability IMO shouldn't even be questioned. He's a goalscorer, period. His movement has been excellent, but no one who has been starting matches can cross the ball or pass incisively.

As others have said, with Eriksen and Lamela (and IMO with Chadli taking more risks) we should see improvement in his service. However, if this current pattern continues for a month or so I think maybe a compelling argument will be made that we bought the wrong player.

As I said, we've bought a great player. That's not debatable. He's scored 4 goals for us in 4 appearances. I just think he's the type of player you need to build a team around.

I trust the coach though. When he gets a period of time to actually work with his completed squad we'll see improvements across the board.

Soldado is a top quality finisher, but not one of our player's has made much effort to play him in.

Some of the runs he has made past few games have been top notch.

Was one occasion against the Goons where he had left them for dead and Townsend decided to cut and shoot, greedy and inexperienced.

Lamela seems a less selfish player, Eriksen certainly isn't selfish and can pick a pass.

Soldado is the least of our worries.

That left side is the problem..... Rose and Chadli. Ouch

The thing about Soldado is whenever he DOES get a touch you can see he's fucking class. He may get like 2-3 opportunities in a match and he always gets it on target. He did absolutely nothing against Arsenal and then suddenly he's had a shot cleared off the line.

IMO he needs to be the focus of the team. The biggest thing we should be working on is developing an understanding with his movement. I have confidence that we're doing this.
