What is it with THFC and conceading late goals...?

I dont know about you guys but I'm sick to death of us conceading late crucial goals in games. You can forgive it happening a few times or so but it happens on a consistent basis at our club. Just think where we could have been if we had not conceaded lates goals this season.

In season 05-06 I have no doubt what so ever that we would have pipped the Scum to 4th if we had'nt conceaded them late goals (West Ham H, Sunderland A, Fulham A, Scum A, etc):bang:

Last season we would have finished well into the top half of the table if again we had'nt conceaded all this silly late goals, maybe Jol would still be in a job too.:bang:

What is the problem. Is it lack of concentration, fatigue/tiredness, bad management, a run of bad luck, failure to take our chances in games, etc...? People say that these things even out at the end of the season, but I just cant see it. Some may blames the players but only JJ, Defoe, King and Daws remain from the 05-06 teams and they were suffering from the same problems that we suffer now. What can we do to remedy this problem?

We should attack more, instead of defending and trying not to concede, hoping to get a point instead of going for all three.

It's quite difficult for the opposition to score when they don't have the ball or are defending a corner.

Stop conceding them? :)

It's the desperation of the team that leaves gaps while we go for a goal. We need to learn to shut up shop and accept a point. And despite who plays we always seem desperate.

We lost a crucial player Lee our best left back

he is the only one who can perform at a consistent basis and have tremendous work rate. its a shame ramos didnt rate him but jol certainly did

Looks like we completely disagree Matty :)

Only because I don't think we are capable of shutting up shop - we've tried to do that, yet consistently seem to fail.

Mind you, it's not like we are scoring many, so maybe my idea is also flawed.

Yes, but YPL was a important part of the class of 05-06 who also were conceading silly late goals. Just think where that team SHOULD have been if they had not done so.....

It makes it feel even worse when Arsenal usually score late goals (+80m) and nick 3 pts.

I think it's because we are not very good but sometimes we manage to raise our game and prevent the opposition scoring for 89 minutes, actually they usually they score much sooner.

We play too many games and suffer with the fitness? That would be my guess. We need a bigger squad so we can rest players more. We often play Cup games when our opponents have not (Burnley in the week for example) And we do usually perform better than anyone outside the top 4 when it comes to Cup games. So i think its a case of us needing a better squad to handle 3 Cup competitions and the League.

Harry has spoken about Cup games not being a priority, yet we still have to play several 1st team players. If we were to go out of the Cups then i would expect us to improve in the League a great deal, and to go the full 90+ minutes. But i wouldn't be happy with that. I like to see us compete in Cup games and i would love more silverware. Its a tough situation. But we simply dont have the squad to handle all these games. Yet we should have. Instead, we seemed to chop down the squad in the summer.

Edit: Just thinking. Imagine if we still had Stalteri, YP Lee, Rocha, Boeteng and Ghaly actually active in the squad from the start instead of selling some, and leaving some to rot in the reserves? I think that would have made a difference.

This has been going on for as long as I can remember way before Jol. So I can only conclude that it comes down to the mentality of the players.

When we were going for fourth place it was a new thing for all the players and they choked. Last season after the CC cup Ramos and Gus and a few of the other players came out and said there wasn't much to play for because we're not going to go down and we've already qualified for Europe.

several players came out and said how they couldn't wait for next season to start and they were good enough to challenge for fourth place.

All wrong! That slack attitude has now continued into this season. Carrick commented that at Man Utd you are expected to win every game where as at Tottenham that is not the case.

Unless the players start changing their attitude and apply themselves and start thinking that tottenham are a side that can go places, it is always going to be like this.

We've always been sh!te at defending. Over the years we've been renown for our attacking football, flair & skill not for having a rock solid defence. It'll take years to get rid of this mindset.

It didn't take long to get rid of the attacking football, flair & skill.

Its time we work on our football as a team its far fmore effective than bring in big names and its raelly up to the players. With good team work we stand a better chance of controlling the tempo of the game. Sometimes you need a faster tempo like yesterday we started with a fast tempo but we gradually lost it. Against high work rate teams like wigan and most others in the EPL the key is to play a fast tempo and make one touch passes quicker. Good players can decide when to run with the ball into openings and we DO NOT have players like that. A few rapid simple passes can get you a long way
