Rioting last week, crowd trouble this, racist chanting last summer (as well as last night's banana), have they always had this element or has their fanbase been recently radicalised?

Our clashes with them in the 70s were, to put it mildly, feisty off the pitch. As far as I know they've always had an abnormally large radical group of fans.

I read somewhere we were the ones that gave them their first taste of hooliganism in them games

References to lynching & HIV

It's racist to my ears. Some (presumably those who enjoy singing it) will probably argue that it's intent & overtones are not racist, but they are

fair enough. as vile a song as it may be, i've never thought of it that way.

Not defending the chant, but just because it is filled with hate does not make something racist, I hate ****bell with every ounce of my being does that make me a racist? No, of course it doesn't because I hate him for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with race, if Bale had done a ****bell I'd hate him with every ounce of my being too.

A chant becomes racist when it attacks someone on the basis of their race, whether that be via a racist slur or just saying i hate *insert ethnic race*. The ****bell chant is not racist, but it is still a vile and unacceptable chant, I just think we should be precise about the reasons it is unacceptable.

Personally I think it's racist, and so is the Adebayor song.

I would have imagined that references to "swinging from a tree" and "your mum washes elephants" have a lot to do with the race of the target.

****bell is a Judas **** though. No question.

I thought that the song referred to Judas as he hanged himself so in my eyes isn't racist but it is a horrible song. The Adebayor song is either racist or an offensive stereotype. Washing elephants is an Indian or African
thing so not specific to colour.

I don't believe the reference was to lynching of black people - I believe it was more about suggesting he would hang himself because of his reported depression and mental illness in the press

HIV also isn't race related

So while the songs are certainly nasty and crossing the line - I think its wrong to label them racist (by applying racist context to them that was not there in my opinion)

Its a bit of a jump and assumption to suggest that swinging from a tree is a reference to lynchings of black people in America however many years ago

Its not a nice song, I don't agree with the song personally but I really don't think its fair to label it racist when in my opinion it was quite clearly meant to be a reference to the potential of him hanging himself because at the time he was in the press talking about his depression

As for the Adebayor song - it was about him being African yes, but I feel like if there were stereotypical songs about Italian players and pasta or whatever shit no one would really care. It's a playful song making fun about stereotypes and I do find it a bit political correctness gone mad when people get up in arms about it being racist

I've said many times that I've never heard a black person take exception to it, only ever seems to be white people who are offended by it and it strikes me as being extreme political correctness (no one would say anything if there were a song about Irish players and leprechauns or being drunkards whatever)

We must have some really stupid fans if they are singing that after all the recent publicity for Chelsea and West ham.

Feyenoord fans have always been like that. One of their favourite chants directed against Ajax is 'the best thing the Nazi's ever did was gas all the Jews'.

To which the Ajax fans reply 'the best thing the Nazi's ever did was bomb Rotterdam'.
