The mental gymnastics I've seen from Villa fans to try and explain how McGinn shouldn't have been sent off are something else. "It wasn't a red, it was a yellow. A horrible horrible horrible yellow but still a yellow" How many horribles do you have to add to a yellow before it becomes a red?

Will admit that I was shocked when he got the red out, but not because it didn't deserve it. Just you see so much awful shit like that hand waved off with a yellow. The old consistency problem again, so I can understand why they feel hard done by as so many of those don't get what they deserve. It was a nailed on red.

The refs don't help themselves with just going with feels on what they decide in the moment. Watkins foul in the first half wasn't dissimilar in that it was late and there was no intention to play the ball. He didn't clatter in with the same force that made this one egregious, but then he didn't even get a sodding yellow.

All anyone wants is some consistency ffs

It was a superb piece of refereeing. From the live camera I was surprised, but when you see the replays it was an absolutely indisputable red.

Really struggling to how they are saying Villa controlled the game.

They controlled us by limiting our chances but that's about it. They didnt do what they wanted to on the counter attack as we dealt with it well today.

Therefore you could say we kinda cancelled each other out in the fast half.

However, second half we did what they didnt, blitzed a counter attack by making a superb sequence to cut through their high line.

From then on the game was totally ours.

Some football fans either refuse to admit their opponents/rivals play well or really really can't read a game of football

Its almost like we toy with teams first half, let them get relaxed. Then second half just turn it on.

They started bright but Watkins fluffed a few chances to get them into good positions. Other than that, I don’t remember them doing anything until the Digne header late on in the first half.

Also I think 2 of the Watkins chances were from us giving the ball away rather than them building up any sort of play. They had no identity at all. I have said this before, they have been so bad at home since beating City and Arsenal back to back in December.

Yeah my thoughts exactly.

It was actually worse than I thought at the time. But you could see from Johnson's action it was worthy of the uproar.

But I wasn't expecting the red cause we have seen Shaw, Cash and others do that to our players and in some cases not even get a yellow.

I have repeatedly stated that I fucking hate it when a player does that and feel even more aggravated when the ref does not give it what it deserves.

On another note, our players need to react like that more often. I think we often let stuff like that slide or are too soft.

When Maddison got elbowed he did get up and react but we probably needed a player just telling the ref or getting in Lerma's face too.

For all Villa fans talk of how good they are they sure did change their approach for this game. Sat back and tried to counter us because they saw that as the way to be us. They should believe more in their own game. With us we play our game home or away against any opponent.

We were 2-0 up the main talking point was still how bad the referee was. So many soft fouls given against us, two yellows soft as margarine in the Sahara. Yet because he gives a clear red he won it for us?🤔🙄🙄

Bissouma, but that was only a pen if you were sat at the top of the Holte End, facing the wrong way, and having not seen a replay of it from any angle whatsoever.
And had ten pints before the match.

And how was Bailey not booked in the 1st half? Ref was poor was surprised he gave the red tbh

Impossible to know for certain, but if that challenge hadn’t happened in front of the dugout and if our players hadn’t gone nuts, would the ref have shown a red?

Little things like this can be very very important - players pressuring the ref, the manager snarling before and after the game in interviews.

Both Fergie and Jose, two people who are definitely not stupid, knew the value of these things over the course of a season

Thing that stood out for me was how they sat back but still played such a high back line, it definitely felt like they weren't as comfortable or familiar with that approach. If they had gone about their day as normal then we might've still scored four but they'd probably have scored a couple too.

Made me nervous when VDV came off but, as others have said, we seemed to close that gap pretty seamlessly, and they just weren't the threat I expected them to be.

I have always been an advocate for those to be reds. No intent to play the ball and full force on the player. I wanted a red for it, but didn't think he would actually give it. Having watched it back multiple times you see our bench jump up in anger along with the players. And when the red comes out watch Romero clap. Small detail that can be missed but loved it.

Now I just hope other officials follow suit and it becomes a consistent thing (which I doubt will happen).

Was their biggest mistake not to play their natural game. Good teams let the opposition worry about their game, not the other way around. They don't change their way of playing at home.

It's a good point and also very interesting now to see that teams are changing against us because they feel threatened and are trying to stop us, where as with some previous managers we have changed our setup to counter other teams. It feels like Ange doesn't even know what a different setup is unless we are losing late in a game. He just wants to put the pressure on other teams to figure his tactics out.

I agree, but if it had paid off you can imagine all the comments about Emery outsmarting us, Ange not being flexible or pragmatic enough etc.

I think these coaches walk such a fine line. When it works out they are hailed as tactical masters, and when it doesn’t everyone can see what a big mistake it was.

I am definitely enjoying our approach this season though, at least always trying to play our way, even if it doesn’t always come off.

Trouble is if you do that at home fans will still complain about the football even if it comes off. They pay to see their players go for it at home. At least if you go for it the fans are more forgiving of a loss. The way Ange has us playing makes the fans proud to follow even if we lose games here and there.

You're not going to get consistency from different referees. What one ref thinks is different to another. I met Craig Pawson a couple of weeks ago and he was explaining it very well to me.

I get some decisions are subjective, but there's nothing wrong with wanting consistency across the board either. Every ref should be giving virtually the same decision more often than not. I don't want "we had Oliver so it wasn't given, but if we had Pawson it would have been a penalty!" type stuff. It should be a penalty for both, or not for both.
