I've always like to think that not all scousers are crackheads, this comment makes me think otherwise...
Youre right to think otherwise....since the recession hit ,its been a strict diet of bath salts and glue.

With a year left on his contract? No chance. They can want all they want, he won't go for that much

Good point, I forgot about that. Mind you, they got £10m for Vertonghen when he was on his last year and he's a defender.

I think £14m with some add ons sounds about right?

We have bought well previously, but we cannot assume we will continue to do so year after year.

Are you saying qualifying for the CL has no impact on our ability to attract players? Yes, i know money plays a big part but to say CL qualification isn't a factor is rather naive.

That bolded sentence of yours above needs a re-think. You think its "far more likely" he'll leave if we don't get it, but you disagree that its "far more likely" he'll stay if we do?? As a we are talking about a binary outcome (he stays or he goes) you're statement is a little confused.

As for Real offering loads I dont believe for a second its a certainty we will sell if Real offer loads this summer. If its your opinion that we will sell, then fine - we have a difference of opinion.

As for my Spurs goggles I am under no illusions that we will sell him at some point - my opinion is that we won't if we qualify for the CL this year, and even if we qualify the season after next i suspect he will go for big buck next summer (ie 2014).

We can't assume anything, that's my entire point. There's a heavy dose of devil's advocate in this, so apologies if you're getting the brunt of it, but there were lots of assumptions in your initial post. History has shown we're pretty good at finding affordably good midfielders. You said we can't buy a Dembele every year - so I gave four or five very good examples of us getting good midfielders at very manageable cost. Bearing in mind if we sell Bale, we'll have a windfall, I don't see midfield being an issue. It's more his goals we'll miss, because, as I say, buying strikers very much is an issue for us

CL certainly plays a part, but I think it's overplayed by some fans. As I've just said, look at the year we got CL and the players we bought, then look at us missing out last year and the players we bought. We undoubtedly had a better window when we weren't in the CL, so I'd say that disproves your theory to a certain extent. Just because we're in CL doesn't mean we're suddenly going to start signing worldies for every position. Levy doesn't work like that, and reality doesn't work like that.

I think the Hazard stuff got a few people excited, that he would have come to us if we'd beaten Chelsea to CL, but I really don't believe this. Just look at his eventual salary (£185k a week I believe). I firmly believe he would have gone somewhere else even if we did get CL, to someone who will pay that (tho it wouldn't have been Chelsea, which would have been nice, I guess)

Binary outcomes aren't reality, though. This isn't a computer. If we don't get Champions League, he will almost certainly leave, but still not absolutely certain he will, but I think we'll all agree it's quite likely. But this is not directly related to us not getting in the Champions League, it's a different set of events. It's not confused, it's a different situation. If we get in the Champions League, I would say the likelihood of him staying increases, yes, but I don't think it then becomes "far more likely" he will stay, it just becomes another factor in our favour – a factor that is still wiped out by an offer from Real, in my opinion.

Life is not black and white like that. Just like I think Modric would have left last season even if we made CL. One doesn't necessarily equate to the other, they are not fans. One tackle from a Charlie Adam and Bale's Madrid future is history, so would he risk putting what is clearly his dream on the backburner if that's a real concern for him (which he has claimed on more than one occasion it is, and many of our fans have argued it too)?

It's only ever someone's opinion on here, we have no facts and no insight on what people are thinking. But I would say if Real offer what's enough for Levy, yes, he'll be off. I agree, I don't think they will – they have a history of low-balling first. Anyway, back to what our opponents think…

Failing to understand the stick Everton are getting from some on here. I don't think the fans comments are that deluded; they certainly do have a chance to break into the European places and it would be deserved after a consistent campaign. Okay they don't play the best football in the league but it is vastly improved on a few seasons ago, and much of their link-up play against us at Goodison was fantastic. To say they are negative is without foundation too; they don't have the resources for big-money signings and their main striker is off the boil this season (ring any bells?!) yet they are only a few league goals shy of us so far. I don't know, maybe I just see some parallels with us, living in the shadow of our rivals for a long time and gradually building up a team that can challenge without the help of super-rich investors.

Look at our home scoring record (only six prem teams have scored less than us) and Evertons battling qualities away from home (only four defeats all season) then they have every reason to be hopeful of getting a result. I think the fact that a couple of their key players are missing make us favourites to win but I don't expect there to be more than one goal in this. COYS

I think it's the ones saying "Why on Earth would some of you take a draw?" and "We're Everton, we're better than Spurs" that have got people's backs up. The league table says we're the 3rd best team in the country - that's why we're favourites and it's bizarre that fans of any team would look at a trip to WHL as an easy 3 points.

Every team has fans like that I suppose. Here are a few quotes from "It's A Grand Old Team" Forum, mixed bag but not blind delusion:

"Yeah as long as we don't lose to Spurs we should still be in the mix. All those teams are dropping points here and there -- no reason to expect that won't continue. The key is that Spurs (or Chelsea) don't get too far ahead -- four teams going after two places is much better than three teams chasing one place. My concern would be setting up too defensively for Spurs. I think it will need to be fairly defensive but we can't be under siege for 90 minutes."

"Gibson and Osman are going to have to play the game of their lives vs Spurs. I have,nt seen that yet this season with the only exception being the city game. Spurs are odds on for me unless something happens in the Europa game on thursday."

"Everton can beat the best teams on the day but sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say they have a better team and it showed. I think that is what will happen on Sunday hope I am wrong like but Moyes has no options on the bench and he can only go with what he has from last sat. Spurs have options all over the shop and that will be the differance ...oh for a few quid in jan."

"Was watching Spurs against Swansea and Dawson had a shocker. Couldn't time his run all game and Swansea had a lot of headers on goal because Dawson was a yard behind his man. Their full-backs tend to stand off and allow crosses. They're not infallible Spurs."

"FFS Fulham turned them over in their own back yard and our record down there isn't as bad as you think"

"Defoe has been ruled out of their next three games...
Adebayor to start v us... he's awful. Keep on top of Bale and the win is there to be had."

I think how or defenders play depends on who's between the sticks

Oh and I'm another who really doesn't like watching Everton play. It's not the worst football you will ever see, but I dunno, can't really explain, just something about it that doesn't appeal to me.

(And yes, I'm fully aware that most of our stuff this year has been functional, laced with moments of individual quality)

My hatred began in 95, and a certain Daniel Amokachi, scoring two goals and destroyed us, and i swear he was worse than the Ginger Pele up front.

However now, i kind of appreciate them a bit more. Similar to us in many ways, and id rather that were in the top 4 than any of the other contenders (bar us of course).

Everton are a great club, well managed but with limited funds. They're not organised to my tastes but i can appreciate the bains pienaar partnership, the patience shown to colemans develpoment to a rightback as well as the issues they've had with their strikers over the last few years. Their squad has enough character and talent that i wouldnt feel embarassed if they did beat us. Not that it will happen of course.

one thing for certain they will play to the final whistle, as the result at goodison bears that out. a strong organised side with limitations like west brom Norwich and stoke. and how did we do against them at home this season.

its another tough game which if our team shows up we should nick 3 points buit its not a gimme

It always baffles me how so many opposition fans have such confidence that their team are gonna beat us? Fcuk me, we spurs fans expect the worst when playing Reading at home, let alone when we face a top THREE team away? Is it just us being so negative or are the majority of fans in this country unbelievably deluded?
Idk but I have zero confidence lol. I fear a loss every game and always expect the worst even when we're ahead and dominating.

Yip, actually like Everton for some reason, always have. Decent team, very similiar to us as well.
It's always a tough game, for some reason though, I always fancy playing them at their place, rather than at home though.

Not sure why, but meh. Lets hope for 3 points, that's all I care about - not the end of the world if we don't get 3 points though as I'm sure there are going to be many more slip ups to come.

Please never mention that game again (I've tried to block it out)

I was 14 and spent several hours on a coach to go watch that game with my friend from school expecting Klinsmann and co to take us to Wembley

the trip home was terrible :(

So yea, fuck Everton and the whole city of Leeds......and the M1

I disagree i think we really must get the 3 points against Everton. With Chelsea and City to come (both of which we will probably lose) we need to get as many points in other games as possible. Remember arsenal are only 4 point behind with a game in hand and a pretty easy run in. We are good enough to win against everton at home and we must therefore do exactly that. Not looking forward to that one, sense a tense atmosphere in the lane on sunday - no idea how it will be tonight.
