This little gem from a villa fan on Villatalk

Spurs have one of the strongest squads in the Premier League. Of their "reserve" starting 11 last night 9 of them would walk into our first team and most of them would improve it drastically.

Pretty fair to be honest, we do have a much better squad than we've seen.

All this only winning against easy teams nonsense is a non argument anyway really. It is those matches that have kept us out of the top 4 a couple of times and those matches that any top 4/title challenging team really must win.

If we exclude say United, Chelsea, City, Arsenal, and obviously ourselves that leaves another 15 teams in the league - 30 games home and away. Win every single one of those and you've bagged yourself a whopping 90 points. Christ that leaves room for a couple of cock ups against maybe Liverpool, Everton etc. So in theory we could lose home and away to the two Manc clubs, Arsenal, and Chelsea...and still win the league!!!

it is a stupid argument for other fans to make and reeks of worry to me, any attempt to grab a hold of something to ease those worried minds. But in the past we have needlessly dropped stupid points against bottom of the table teams. Beat those teams, either 1-0 or 10-0, and you've got a very good team capable of challenging for honours.

Agree with this, just look at all the times in recent seasons where we have fudged up in games, particularly at home that we 'should' be winning. It's a cliche, but yes every game is tough and you have to earn your right to win. Most of my Spurs existence has seen us going to places where we always win the game 'on paper', but not always on the green stuff.

The best thing about this season is that it's all been relatively serene. Yeah we left it late against Cardiff, had 2 penalties but we've been in virtually no danger of losing any of those games. I'm loving it.

Except for the fact that Brad made a very very smart save at 0-0 which would've changed the game entirely.

Yes, he did make a good save. But who can say how that affected the outcome of the game? Steer made a succession of good saves.

The game wasn't won because of a gulf in age, quality and performance of the two men between the sticks. It was won because one outfield unit was far more fluid, quicker, stronger, cleverer and more skilfull than the other.

I guess that I can understand why a fan of the losing team would want to gloss it over by passing off the mismatch as a mere matter of seasoned pros against rookies. But it ain't the truth.

I guess we will get beaten by a team that we should beat at some point.

Probably starting this weekend ;-)

You mean her?

I know you meant her, I just needed an excuse to Google her again.

No, I didn't really need an excuse.

Fap.

Pretty sure that's not her. For some reason Google Image Search brings that picture up but if you actually look at the stories they're attributed to, they're not about her, and she really doesn't look anything like that…

Look at the top pic then the ones below: http://www.sportygossip.com/en/unrated/eva-carneiro-beautiful-doctor-chelsea

Still very attractive, but yeah, not like the above. Unless that was taken a seriously long time ago

We lost to assnal. Yanited lost to Pool. Pool to Soton. Assnal to Villa. Citeh to Cardifff. Using their own logic the title is between us and Chelsea this season. Noice!

That injury - OMFG. Similar thing happened to me at 15 and naturally was the only thing preventing me from a decade of leading Wasps and Engliand to HEC and WC glory. I was a shoe-in as a rugby legend otherwise. I don't like to make a fuss though.

That's a real shame. Wasps could use the legend you could have been right about now.

...and to keep things on track here's a quote from a Chelsea fan in my neighborhood:
"What the f......WHO THREW THAT???!!!!"

I can sympathise with the Villa fans, their position is where we used to be, dependant on a few good players, lack of squad depth. They are a big club, I don't have a problem with them, I hope they become a top team again, but not at our expense though.

Martin O'Neill is what happened.

Spent your (or rather Randy Lerner's) £100 million on average British players with little resale value, for the most part.

If I'm not mistaken they sold Young and Downing for quite a profit. Also didn't Milner make them a bit of cash?

They didn't have anything like the quality or squad depth that we do now.

This is true, but they still won some league cups and played in Europe. They were also a tough team for us to play against, we went a long time without winning at Villa park.

Boro fans.

Once again he had a great game again tonight scoring twice. I've been a big fan of his for a long time now even when he wasn't an obvious choice. The commentator said tonight that he was sending a message to the manager that he should make more starts.

Well to me he should be starting every game and he is making the manager look a bit foolish. In fact I have thought that he was a bad judge in the past and this could be confirming it. If I know that Defoe is a good player and should be starting every game why does his manager who is getting paid good money think otherwise?
Maybe he just doesn't fit into his idea of a team.
Maybe he doesn't do enough against quality opposition to justify a starting place.
Decent scoring record, but a flat-track bully who gets a lot of goals against shit teams in cup matches. Not a 20 a season striker (league)
How are Spurs doing without him?
If Spurs want to move forward then Defoe cannot be there number 1 forward.

As already said, flat track bully, scores in bursts and can go a long time without scoring (when they are playing decent teams basically) Doesnt hold the ball well enough to play up front on his own all the time.

That struck me as well, Mullers. Could have been a bunch or Spurs discussing it in fact it was so dead on.

You're right that those three were sold for a big profit.

But the problem is that O'Neill just bought so many players. So many average players at that. Many of them significantly overpriced. Here's a list of his main signings in only four seasons (there are quite a few others but they're lesser known so I won't bother to include them):

Stilian Petrov
Didier Agathe
Chris Sutton
John Carew
Ashley Young
Sean Maloney
Eric Lichaj
Andreas Weimann
Nigel Reo Coker
Marlon Harewood
Zat Knight
Wayne Routledge
Curtis Davies
Steve Sidwell
Brad Friedel
Brad Guzan
Nicky Shorey
Luke Young
Carlos Cuellar
James Milner
Emile Heskey
Stewart Downing
Fabian Delph
Habib Beye
Stephen Warnock
James Collins
Richard Dunne

In addition to overpaying for many of them, Villa's wage bill was out of control. They were making big annual losses. As a consequence, Lerner put the brakes on. And that's why O'Neill left. He wanted to sign yet more players. But the bank vault was empty.

And Villa have been operating on a tight budget ever since, in order to get the finances back in shape.

That's why, from being not far off us, they've become so average.
