I was playing The Last Of Us online multiplayer recently and there was a West Ham fan on the other team.. I knew this because his PSN id was something like COYI66. I assumed that the 66 was in reference to when West Ham famously won the world cup, which i believe is the only time a football club has won the world cup... Anyway i beat him on The Last Of Us and this guy sends me a message saying " Thats how your nan sucks me off" says everything you need to know about West Ham fans.

Think you'll find half of the online population speak like that.

It is amazing looking at their league positions in the 1960's that they managed to keep hold of players like Moore, Peters and Hurst and that was supposedly their golden era.

I think that this had a lot to do with the old "retain and transfer" system that was in place at the time. As I remember it, the players had no say in who they could be transferred to, even when their contracts had expired, and were therefore tied to a club unless that club decided to transfer them. Combined with the maximum wage it was basically football slavery.

I read somewhere recently that Moore actually wanted to join Spurs at one point when his contract had expired, but West Ham refused to transfer him to us. Not sure how true that is, but under the "retain and transfer" system it was certainly possible that it could have happened like that.

Yeah I was pretty sure I'd heard that before about their precious Bobby

"Moore left West Ham on bad terms and was never again fully welcome at the club. The dispute went back to 1966 when he had sought a move to Tottenham; he believed that, with Spurs, he would have a better chance of winning the title. West Ham refused to sell - as the club was entitled to do in the era before freedom of contract - and Moore's determination to go almost prevented him from playing in the World Cup."

Back on topic, in a thread titled 'Spurs new stadium revealed'.

When ever a spammer talks about winning the World Cup, you should refer them to West Auckland FC. They own the very first "World Cup" having won it twice.

There was an invitation to the best leagues in the world in the twenties. The FA sent a coal mining team from West Auckland, as they forgot to send a pro team. They won the cup, and defended it later. That is the basics of the story.

There is a film about it somewhere.

There was a commemorative game marking the occasion of the win in Italy not all that long ago. I used to drink in a pub where the landlord was somehow involved funding/fundraising for it. I've got my photo taken in his pub holding the original World Cup they won.

Worked out well though, not sure how true the story is I was told, but apparently the organisers wanted Woolwich Arsenal to go and a mix up with the names meant that West Auckland did instead. As I say, well done FA, worked out well if true... ;)

EDIT: it seems upon reading the Wikipedia page that the story I was told then about Arsenal has been almost debunked and that the cup is an exact replica after the original was stolen. Damn fact finding...

I only know about it because I lived in the North East for eight years. Sheffield is a long way from Bishop Auckland!

I was born and raised in the North East, spent 27 years there before moving to Sheffield. Thankfully Darlington is a bit closer to Bishop than Sheffield is :p
