When is clattering into a goalie a foul?

Thinking back to the opening Euro game on Friday night....I was sure it was a foul by Giroud on the Romanian keeper for the opening French goal that Giroud headed in.

The keeper was literally just about to catch it and Giroud jumped into him, clearly knocking the keeper's arm away meaning he couldn't catch it......Giroud heads in for a goal.

In the centre of the pitch, if player A is about to get the ball with his foot, and Player B clatters into him knocking his feet away just before the ball arrives - it's a foul - right??

The pundits were saying the goalie had to be stronger but I don't get it. If Giroud had got to the ball first then grand, but I thought he fouled the keeper in order to get his head on the ball. Anyone agree?

Keepers are far too protected these days and they know it. It's why they flail about when getting knocked. They get so much of an advantage with being able to use their hands.

i played in goal once and got flattened by the oppo forward and my own fucking defenders..

then the ref told me to stop being a big girls blouse.. tbh he was right .. goalies gets to knee, punch anyone in front of them.. look at Neuer windmilling while jumping and chopping everyone in the way

they can protect themselves..

I'd need to see it again, but I thought Giroud jumped straight up from where he was standing and the keeper jumped across and into him. Giroud was in the air first claiming that space so I didn't see it as a foul.

Edit: Totally wrong about that. Both jumped at the same time, but Giroud just got there first. He didn't hit the keeper and knock it out of his hands.

Agree....
Basically OP seems to be saying that any contact between keeper and other player is a foul in keeper's favour?!
As the pundits said on the night - why the hell is the keeper coming to try and punch/claim the ball when it's outside the 6 yard area. That's the area his defenders are covering. His problem and his problem alone if he screws it up because a striker, who is trying to get on the end of the cross, is in his way.

What the OP is saying is that giroud knocked the keepers arm away as he was about to catch it, difficult to keep arm still when jumping so the slightest knock will cause an issue, hence I agree it was a foul, but then again I am a keeper (was) so probably will side with them.

I don't see that. I think the attacker has his body in the place that the ball is going to land first so it's up to the keeper to stop it from reaching it's target. Giroud isn't looking at the keeper so he's not deliberately trying to impede him.

Nothing wrong with it at all.
Keeper wasn't strong enough, he could have delayed coming out meaning he comes and punches clear, wiping out Giroud in the process or he leads with his knee and elbow.
Crap keeping in all honesty, if I'd have conceded that I'd have expected a gob full!

Awful keeping, but he probably felt he had no choice with star man Chirches playing infront of him..

Didn't think the Giroud one was a foul personally, I thought the keeper screwed up more than anything.

The OP is correct Girouds elbow knocks the keepers right arm out of the way causing the keeper to miss it, the only commentator/pundit to pick up on it was Alan Shearer on MOTD, who said "9 times out of 10 it's given as a foul, especially in Europe". Giroud knew he did it too, as his first reaction is to look at the ref to see if he saw it.

its a foul defo, it also looked like a yellow card foul when Berg clattered the irish keeper yesterday.
