My son idolised Keane, even dreamed about playing alongside him in years to come, his proudest possession was a signed, framed Spurs shirt signed by Keane to Liam (my son), the pleasure I got from giving it to him one Christmas and seeing the joy on his face was immeasurable, when Keane left he wanted to put it in the bin, couldn't blame him really after the way Keane behaved. Keane's second coming was embarrassing, the better part of that was was when we got shot off him it was the making of Bale for reasons that cannot be gone into on a public forum.

My son is a Liam too. Oddly enough a few weeks before Keane left for the Dippers, I found a framed signed Keane shirt in a shop in Grantham, which I bought and put away for Christmas for him.

I wanted to chuck it. But he was delighted anyway.

My hero was Greaves and although i had a ST at Spurs ( we were at home to Coventry) i went to see Jimmy play his first game for the spammers at City, the Spammers won 5-1 and Jimmy scored two. Best goalscorer i have seen he was a genius.

Hoddle leaving also broke my heart ( best player to have worn the shirt imo), the player we miss most now is Modric ( he reminds me so much of Ossie).

My late father always reckoned John White took that honour, he saw both play. As for you, you're just a bleeding heart liberal! ;)

I remember when all the conjecture about Greaves' future was going on and my mother winding me up (not that I realised then) and calling Greaves a has been, me getting angry, that has to be the one that hurt most I guess, JD leaving hurt too because I think managed right he could have been another Greaves. All the rest you sort of expect and are prepared for because there's very few shocks in the internet age when everything is played out over a matter of weeks via forums and news sites.

We still have the shirt, make me an offer. ;) It's that old it's got 22 on the back.

Hoddle. However, Waddle was a real shocker as it came out of the blue and was the prelude to the financial problems that put us back years.

Sheringham, carrick , berbatov , VDV . (Bale only on talent)

Sheringham coz first time I truly felt the big boys can literally just take our best player.
Carrick coz he transformed our entire style to a more "spurs" way
Berbatov at times he made football seem beatiful and gracefull that's the skill set he possessed. No matter what my other mates supporting different clubs would say about their players I would always truthfully say we had the best striker in the league.
Being a Dutchman I felt the extra twang when this midfield maestro left us. You always felt you had a ace in the hold when the whole team wasn't ticking . Very clever and attacking with the ball , excellent vision.

Can tell you right now that if the missus is still around for whenever Chadli departs, she will be absolutely devastated :meh:

I was there when it happened BOTH times. You heard the crack at the reserve game when he made his comeback.

I think in current times it has to be Bale because of his amazing talent but I still miss VDV too. I also missed Steed Malbranque when he left.

Back in the 60s, although he didn't leave in the way this thread intended, the absence of John White through his untimely death hit me hardest of all.

I was at Old Trafford. Now I know you were there and didn't meet is doubly sad.

Watching Niko Kranjcar today, he really is a beautiful footballer and man. I loved all of our Croats, a little piece of me died inside when they left

For me, Berba. God how I hated that fucker.

Of course that's related to how much I loved him. As a relatively new (10 years) Spurs fan, he was my first true betrayal. I was SO glad to see him fail at Man U. (Yes he won trophies there, but in no way was he considered a success)

Jimmy Greaves. I was 10 when he signed for us, and within a year my Dad was taking me to every home game at WHL plus many aways.
JG was my absolute all-time hero, even now I look back and view it as a privilege that for 7 years I witnessed not only the greatest goalscorer in our history, but one of the most naturally gifted players in the history of English football.
It must have been around 1969, early in the season, when we went up to Old Trafford, and we ended up losing 1-3 if I remember correctly. However the thing that stands out in my memory were the 3 times Greavsie was clear through on goal one-on-one with their keeper. The first one he slid past the outside of the left post, the second past the outside of the right post and the third he chipped over the bar. Chances that previously he would have put away in his sleep. Right then, right there - unbelievably - I knew his time was coming to an end. I honestly thought he'd go on for ever.
In January we were dumped out the cup by Crystal Palace, Jimmy was dropped and the end was near. By March we'd swapped him for Martin Peters, and he was off to West Ham. I was 17 at the time, and it broke my heart - the end of an era, and it marked the end of my youth.
Apologies if this reads like an obituary, but those really were the happiest times.

No need to apologize mate. I enjoyed reading it quite a bit. Nostalgic, interesting, and very emotional recollection. (y)

ossie :depressed:, and hoddle.

PS. Didn't break my heart per se, but that 87-88 season overall was a difficult transitional period in my personal and football life both.

Gazza, Modric and Bale for footballing reasons

Campbell because it was immoral and unforgiveable.

Carrick and Berbatov were pretty bad though as they were absolutely key and another English club just basically demanded to sign them and we had to bend over and take it. You always know deep down that your players don't love the club as much as you but when they make it abundantly clear it's a bit of a kick in the swingers.

In rough order - all the ones I can remember that got sucked up the food chain against our wishes or were misguidedly sold prematurely:

1) Gascoigne
2) Sheringham
3) Campbell
4) Dawson
5) Ginola
6) Lineker
7) van der Vaart
8) Sandro
9) Klinsmann
10) Barmby
11) Stewart
12) Berbatov
13) Modric
14) Bale
15) Carrick
16) Keane
17) Popescu
18) Ruddock
19) Carr

I'm just not old enough to remember Waddle and Hoddle leaving for bigger things

Great list!

1. Have you ever considered that the club made up an injury, not Bale. Like they did with Adebayor.
2. What do you mean by saying "a proper good bye".

1. He said he was injured and did not go to Hong kong tour. Surely, Club would have wanted his presence in Hong kong, especially when we were going into first year sponsorship deal with AIA.

2. Proper good bye - well, I don't need a cliche letter from him explaining how he loved us. But what was missing was a bit of genuine contact to fans. Rather, he was more focused on saying why he loved Madrid. It gave me a feeling he sneaked his way out of our club - as if he was being restrained here and felt good in getting away from our club. Even in the subsequent months, he was shying away from expressing anything . Only reason I see him saying something now, was merely down to the question that was asked of him.

It might sound strange but in recent times, Van Der Vaart leaving was worse than Bale for me because it was so unexpected. Bale going was horrible but I had long accepted that he would be off at some point so I was semi prepared. With Van Der Vaart though it was so out of the blue it really shocked me.
VDV didn't break your heart though did he? It wasn't like he stopped wanting to play for us and moved on to bigger and better things.

Sol pissed me off rather than breaking my heart, Gazza broke my heart! I was totally gutted when he went, was such a talent

VDV in recent times, I sort of expected it with Modric and Bale, but VDV just came out of the blue to me. For some odd reason I was really upset we sold Caulker, it was like a kick in the teeth. Of course there was loads of players I was sad to see go, even the likes of Siggy and Dempsey who weren't everyones cup of tea I missed them at Spurs too.

Someone did post a picture of Krancjar, Corluka and Modric together in Spurs shirts, that brang back some good memories

Gazza was my most favourite player at Spurs, I loved him but getting to see him on channel 4 every week softened the blow a bit

Chris Waddle. I remember my mum giving me the day off school because I cried so much. What a player...
