Which signing got you most excited?

Simple question, and regardless of their success with us (as I’m sure we’ve all got excited about a few flops), which Spurs signings got you most excited?

In my youth, I think it must’ve been Klinsmann for his second stint. I was 12 and one of my earliest memories of football was his initial departure, so to see him returning in the midst of our absolute dreadful season was pulsating.

A few years in, Robbie Keane. Championship Manager legend who you’d always sign from Wolves at 17, and had just had an amazing World Cup too. Really felt that him coming in would signal the beginning of a new Dawn under Hoddle. Little did we know…

Edgar Davids a few years later. A bit past it perhaps, but the first time we’d signed a bona fida world superstar since Klinsmann. That summer on SC was hilarious too.

Soldado, I really believed he was going to bring us that spark that we’d been missing up front, and that with the rest of the Bale money signings we’d be set to play good football filled with goals. I watched La Liga more than this league at the time and really felt we were getting 20 goals a season with him. Oh how wrong I was.

Which players excited you most when they signed and why?

Klinsmann for me. Within 5 minutes of his friendly debut it was obvious he would be great.

And as you mention Soldado he was the complete opposite, after 5 minutes of his debut he was clearly always going to struggle.

Davids, van der Vaart, Soldado, Lamela, Ndombele are the ones that spring to mind.

If I have to pick one, then I think it's probably Lamela. I genuinely thought he'd be a superstar.

Van Der Vaart - iconic player whose ability was unreal
I (stupidly) never rated Rafa that highly till we signed him and I realised what he was capable of. So much as I’d like to say I was super excited by his arrival, I was merely in a bit of shock that we’d signed someone of that stature when it seemed like our window was over. The player himself, sadly my excitement didn’t set in until I actually saw him playing for us (but, from his first match, I realised what a fool I’d been).

Gareth bale part 2

Was very excited to see a season of him playing alongside Kane and Son. Thanks José!

Postiga! Got his shirt. Went to a couple of pre-season games under Hoddle. What could go wrong?

Ndombele. Should be bossing the whole of the Prem.

We're usually 2 or more players away from where we want to be and we don't usually sign 'mega-stars', so I tend to be optimistic about our signings as opposed to excited, as I know that it's unlikely any 1 new player will have a major impact on the whole of the season.

That said, I was excited when Davids, VDV, Soldado and NDombele signed. They were definitely important pieces in the puzzle, so to speak, even if the last two didn't work out.

Not sure which 1 player these days would make me genuinely excited. Well, players who we could realistically sign anyway. A very good back up for Harry Kane (if he stays) possibly?

I think I'm too pragmatic for this thread

Ardiles & Villa. No 24 hour news back then. I was 17 and had just marvelled at the Argentina '78 World Cup. I was on the way to work and popped into a newsagents to get my morning paper. There was that famous headline "Spurs scoop the world." Couldn't wait to get to work - for once- to show the story to all my West Ham mates.

Had talksport on, was driving and it was deadline day. Never forget when they said they were heading over to Tottenham Hotspur for a huge announcement. And we'd signed Rafa Van Der Vaart out of nowhere! Nearly crashed my car!

klinsmann for me and of course vdv. what made vdv better was all the other fans saying we'd never get him.

Van der Vaart for sure, was such a great surprise. Also Modric and Eriksen because of their huge potential.

Zokora…stupidly thought he was going to be our Vieira and subsequent missing piece.

Pretty sure there was a piece in the Guardian when we signed him that said exactly that, got me too! :ROFLMAO:

Cant believe that’s a decade ago. I miss that team and vibe under Redknapp back in the old WHL.

Really enjoyable team. Poeple talk about Poch not being backed. Imagine if Redknapp got his wish of Tevez and Cahill instead of Nelsen and Saha.....
