Why is England so bad in European competition?

I think one of the main reasons is a lack of world class english players at Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and City.

In Spain and Germany the talent pool is much bigger. There are many local players playing for Barca, Madrid and Bayern. So they only need to bring in a handful of world class foreigners to complement the existing players.

In those countries, any good player is bought by the biggest club. In England its not the case, the league is so competitive that 6 clubs can all compete for the same player. The lower clubs will not sell to bigger clubs so easily.

The second reason, is that many of the teams are in transitions. Liverpool are still an incomplete team. Spurs are very incomplete. Man Utd have half a team. City are still short in wide midfielders and forwards. Arsenal still need a defence and keeper.

Only chelsea has strong first 11 with no obvious weakness. but, with the money available, it won't be long before our clubs compete again.

You want to know why English teams are doing so bad in Europe, there is one reason and one reason only:

ARROGANCE!

Here is the list of teams that knocked out english teams this season
Hull - They thought being a prem side that they only had to turn up against the Belgium side no one heard of and they would get that free pass to the group stage all top european sides have

Liverpool - They were poor against the smaller teams thinking they had to turn and got outplayed by lesser sides like Ludogorets and then again against Basel and Besiktas

Us - We completely dominated Fiorentina in the first half and for the other half and leg it was like we only had to turn up to make it a formality, it wasn't

Arsenal - They honestly thought they would just have to turn up and everyone, EVERYONE thought that it was just a formality

Man City - They didn't take the Europa League seriously and so their Coefficient got hurt as a result of their exploits in the title and they always get a bad draw and have to face a big team in the knockout stage

Chelsea - PEOPLE saying that we aren't good enough only have to look at chelsea, they have three of the best players from last year finalists. The other top player is koke and they a player in a similar mould in Fabregas, they then have a better winger than Atletico did in hazard and are strong all over the pitch. They probably have one of the best managers in Europe as well but they didn't turn up at all in the second leg and a 10 man PSG battled them off the park.

Everton - They actually didn't turn up with any arrogance but as soon as they got the away goal they switched off a bit

Additional factors
Refs - In england the big teams get preferential treatment and they seem angry that the same doesn't occur at europe unless your name is chelsea

Money - Our cash cow is the Premier League, for other teams in europe their league deal is barely nothing, managers know that they do well in Europe they will get more money than doing well in the league hence spanish teams taking it so seriously

Exposure - Alot of players want to make a name for themselves, players want a big move and their club doesn't want to sell to rival and so the chance of making a name of yourself is huge. Look at Bale he became known to every football fan in Europe after the Inter Matches

I'd actually suggest that it is more arrogant to suggest that arrogance is the only reason the English sides got knocked out of Europe, rather than giving credit to the sides who played good enough football to knock our sides out.

One thing that always makes me annoyed is the cost of grass roots football for any kids wishing to play. Even when I was coaching kids football, I was always annoyed at the weekly, monthly and annual fees that parents had to stump up. So on that basis, we're right to assume that only kids who could afford to play can play, that's a smaller talent pool in order to find naturally gifted players.
School organised football might be free, but who watches that, not even parents go to see it.

I'm sure parks and recreation providers could do more to allow free training and games for kids, instead of looking to make a buck, especially council ones!

I think the CL clubs should be doing a bit better in recent seasons. As for us and the rest of the Europa League teams though I'm not surprised... A number of very dangerous teams that are evenly matched. We aren't as good as we think we are.

too much money. the epl is basically bankrolling the rest of europe when what they should be doing is producing their own players, there's no reason why they couldn't but because of the money involved it's seen as too much of a risk.

Someone mentioned something the other day as to why English teams are getting knocked out this time of year - its because of the amount of games and the mental and physical demands are leaving us short in Europe.

Compare us to Wolfsburg for example. From Dec 1st - March Feb 26 (when we were knocked out) Tottenham played 22 games, Wolfsburg played 12.

Fiorentina in the same time period played 16.

because we mostly produce strong and/or pacey players without any technical ability

Also, the FA's of other countries help their teams who are in Europe, giving them more time between matches. A lot of foreign teams in the Champions league that play Tues/Wed, play their league games the friday before, giving them ample recovery time. We think nothing of making our teams play Sunday, Wed, Sat, Tues, Sat. For our cup final, we played away Thursday and had to play wembley Sunday. Surely if the FA had put to UEFA that fact, maybe we would have been able to play the UEFA cup game the following week, or earlier the previous week. It seems teams are being punished for being successful.

Secondly, passion and belief. IMO our teams lack the passion and belief thats required to win games. You can have all the skill in the world, but if you haven't got that desire then your not going to get anywhere. I think the main reason so many smaller countries did well this world cup was because of their passion, you could see the players giving their all on the pitch, leaving nothing out there. I don't think the England team broke sweat in Brazil.

Because we are not as good as the teams we play?, we have been brainwashed by Sky and their pundits who earn a lot of money talking their bullshit into believing that the Prem is the best Lge in the world, its not and has not been for several years now.
