28 years old, 20m plus transfer fee, wages believed to be outside our structure, minimal sell- on value. It would contradict Levy's transfer policy on all 4 fronts. So can't see it.

Would love to be wrong though.

Because he's class.

So are many younger players . I will be very happy if we do sign him but just can't see it unless Zenit hugely drop their asking price. But then again our DOF structure was suppose to bring continuity to our squad members but that policy has gone out the window. As has the British spine to our team. So who knows ?

The 28 thing can be looked at two ways as well.

Thats four good years left, depreciated at £5m a year. If he scores more than 15 goals thats worth it.
Also berbatov is the same age and you would pay that for him. Arguably as good? One to discuss perhaps.

I still have doubts. After the Euros, and at 28, he's looking for the BIG move, and publicly stated where he wanted to go to - and it wasn't N17. If Spurs are the only club to come in for him, let's face it, it's a bit of a climbdown. So where's his motivation - just the money?

Firstly, is he 27 or 28? I have read many reports that state his age as 27.

Also, why should we not spend this amount on him if he is that proven quality we lack? If it is the age you are fretting about then you must consider why pool spent 20 million on our Robbie who is 1 year older, or why Manure wants Berba who is about same age for 5-10 million more. They are willing to spend because they need quality players performing at the peak of their ability and the point is that Arshavin is such a player. The only main difference counting against him is that he is new to EPL and is slight in stature.

Otherwise, based on ability alone, from what I have seen thus far, I think he is just the spark we need. Add another prolific striker with bent and we will score bucketloads again even without berbs and Keano. This is a dream midfield that we have been crying out for all the past 3 seasons so I will welcome him with open arms even if he is a tad overpriced like Bentley.

Quick, 2 good feet can play as CF or AM centrally or wide. Skies are the limit with this fella. easily worth spending the bulk of the moeny we got in from RK and i wouldn't be sad to see us spendig a bit more either. Levy is buying him becasue we need a class number 10. It's not a disgrace that he['s a barca fan, and not real slight on his abiality that they cant justfy spending the money on him when they have Borjan and messi and eto and Henry and Xavi and inesta who are all little or skill full or pacey or all 3. Barca need a giant not another gnome. We have room for more gnomes.

We just "sold" Robbie for 20 Million. We are just replacing him with a better player, same value, same age and we will not break our "wage structure".

Plus we could even sell him in a couple of years if he pushes us to the next level. Maybe Barca will want him.

I say there is only one thing wrong with Arshavin. He is Russian. I know because I live too near them. They are not from this planet. Great player though:grin:

Since when?

The only british player we've sold is Robbo and we just bought Bentley. We've got Hutton, Gunter, Ledley, Woody, Daws, Bale, Lennon, Bentley, Jenas, Hudd, O'Hara and Bent.

If it was just about the money he'd have signed the new contract offer from Zenit which probably would've made him one of the best paid players in the world. He's probably on 50-60k in Zenit already.

So what if Barcelona and other big clubs are/were his most wanted options. Which player doesn't want to go to such clubs if offered the chance?

Obviously, the big clubs don't seem to be willing to take the risk on paying 20 mill for him. I hope we do though. We'll need his creativity and quality if we're going to play a 4-5-1 this season and don't have Berbatov either.

His motivation lately, judging from his own and his agent's statements, seems to be that he doesn't want to play in the Russian league any longer, more than anything else, and wants a change of scenery.

He's born in May of 1981 so he's 27 now.

The guy is brilliant. Im totally sure he would be a massive success if we came. And if we are actually going to be top 4 standard we need players like Arshavin. We need to risk high transfer fees to get players like him, we may as well go for it.

A lot of people are still stuck in a mid-table mindset. Time to start thinking like winners. We're calculating (not speculating) to accumulate.

I'm sure he could be a brilliant addition to the team - but for how long? Maybe I'm still smarting from the Berbatov affair, but I'm just a little wary of another situation where we get a player who has a shining season in the PL, then wants to jump ship.

If we sign better players we have more chance of getting higher in the league and so players are less likely going to want to leave.

Pretty simple really.

Yes that's true but I sort of understand the point. By spine of the team I think you mean GK, CD and CM. A couple of years ago that was Robbo, King, Dawson, Carrick and Jenas. Now it is Gomes, King, Woodgate, Modric, Zokora ( assuming he starts as DM ) . So a gradual change. Not that this is bad.
