Release clauses are a means to a club being able to enter negotiations for any player. I have no idea if Toby would want to go to Arsenal or not but that's a sepaate issue. If they were to trigger it and he told them to fuck off I'd be delighted but you can't get away from the fact that he's a cheap option for what they need and they pay big wages. They'd be crazy to not give it a try with the position they're in.
That’s not how transfers work in the modern game. You don’t enter bidding for a player until you’ve sounded out them/ their agent and seen whether they’re interested in the move.

Fair enough. In your opinion there's no way that Arsenal would even try to get Toby.

I think this is a fundamental misunderstanding of how transfers work. Arsenal would only have to contact Toby’s agent to find out if he’d be receptive to a move. The release clause only becomes a factor if the buying club have already informally agreed terms with the player.

This guy looks like a future beast.

Won't lie, never heard of him but his youtube Video looked really good, I'd love the statement it would make to steal one from Arsenal, I think showing some teeth in the market would be a real statement, too long we've been pushed around in the market.

Reminds me of Kaboul, who could have been so much more.

I would be very surprised if much of the 30 millions is payed upfront if the player stays with Etienne for next season. That way it won't have much effect on this seasons transfer kitty, but possibly save us funds on a Toby/Jan replacement for next season if we believe he is of that quality.
I think that is a big advantage (for the St Etienne) for us over Arsenal. We don't need him right now, and would likely be fine (or better off) loaning him back, whereas Arsenal could definitely use him.

The guy is going to want first team action quickly. He has a lot of players to surpass to achieve that here. Arsenal need a new defence.

If Foyth does move to right back and Toby leaves this/next season, we are then thin on CBs

I was literally just thinking that the transfer forums was a gap in the market where Donald Trump isn't mentioned and uninteresting people who have to mention him at every turn should seize the opportunity and thankfully there you were to plug that hole.
Well, you're welcome.

I would ask what hole you're plugging, but I think it's pretty obvious.
