Working on how to take creative set-pieces

As soon as Man Utd scored their 1st goal I asked why we don't practice how to take creative free-kicks like that too. Its something we're abysmal at and only hope for Christian to come up with something special but it was more significant when I read this comment from LVG afterwards.

"“I am very happy with the first goal because that is what we practiced in many training sessions and now it is coming out."

I really hope our coaches take note and try to get more out of opportunities like that..

Yep, we haven't had an effective routine since Teddy and the short corner.

Everything else our guys have tried since normally involves welliing it hard at the goal,

Could be worse as at least we score or work the keeper unlike corners where we normally fail to beat the first man lol

When you've got someone as good as Eriksen on free kicks then he's entitled to shoot whenever the ball is in front of goal imo.

However, our corners still need work and creative options should definitely be there from wide positions like utd's goal yesterday.

Mitchell's already on it. FM16 has a new set-piece creator. Our set pieces will improve dramatically but we'll have to wait until the November release date to see the benefits.

I don't know how much people expect to score from in these situations.

We were one of the best last year and we're the best in the league this year and still a load of whinging.

So, we have the most goals scored in the whole prem from set pieces, yet we see it as an issue??

For me, given what I've seen this season, all this stat means is we're still shit at it but everyone else is even fkin worse.
If my old pub team had players taking corners like 99% of the PL do they wouldn't have been taking them the following week.
I can't believe how piss poor it is.
And please no 'they're trying to whip it in with precision' bollocks. It's no good going for precision if 99 times out of a hundred the ball goes 4ft off the floor and hits the first bloody defender again, and again, and again, and ....
Time for a rethink if thats the case.

Watching the games, all this means that we're able to get it in the net when we get the chance to do. It doesnt necessarily mean that our set pieces have been great at creating chances because they havent really.

The thing is we're not creating chances for the opposition either.

I genuinely believe that Pochettino has coached Eriksen to target the zone between the edge of the penalty area and the front post, precisely so that the goalkeeper can't get the ball and launch a quick counter-attack. It was obvious to me that it was a deliberate tactic during the Arsenal game (given their pace on the counter) and we seem to be doing it most games now.

Think where all our goals from corners have come from - a header in front of the near post angled in.

Think why Eriksen receives the criticism he does - because his corners are put in that area, look underpowered and are cleared by the first man.

Think how many goals we've conceded this season to a quick counter from a wasted corner - none as far as I can recall.

In much the same way as the number of fouls in the opposition half is an indicator of Poch trying to (a) create a chance for us and (b) neutralise the opposition's ability to launch an attack, then so is the number of corners cleared by the first defender (the result of which is nothing worse than another corner or a throw deep in the opposition's half). I genuinely feel sorry for Eriksen because I think he's getting a lot of flak for doing what he's been asked to do.

Caveat: I really do know nothing about tactics, so this could be a load of BS. Still, thought I'd put it out there.

I know we have the most goals from them but I still get the raving fucking hump that 5 corners a game are wasted. Why is it so hard to get it in the 6 yard box or near the spot?

You're one of these people that would moan if we didn't manage to win consecutive CL's back to back aren't you.

It's a moot point surely?

We;ve scored the most goals from set pieces, thus proving we are doing better than anyone else at scoring.

That might not mean we are doing better at creating chances, but I'll take the scoring over a chance created all day long.

True but with Dier, Vertonghen and Alderweireld we have three of the best at attacking set-pieces. If the delivery was better we'd be getting even more.

Still we have bigger problems to deal with than that.

What, huh, we've scored more goals than anyone from set pieces though - how much better are you expecting FFS?

This place is unbelievable.

I was hardly having a whinge, wind it in.

If you haven't noticed that a lot of our corners don't beat the first man then that is what is unbelievable.

Not really. It's actually really good that we are scoring a healthy number of goals from set pieces.
I'm not even saying we should score more.
I just think it's odd how often we fail to get the ball in the danger areas from corners.
It's almost as if we do it on purpose to lead the opposition into a false sense of security then pop an absolute gem in there and score at will.

Conspiracy anyone?
