Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso retire this weekend. Bayern say that Lahm will go down in their history as a legend. I personally haven't witnessed a better full back in my life time. This brings me to my point, what is the best 11 from the last 20 years (1997)

Here is a quick attempt:

Buffon
Lahm
Cannavaro
Puyol
Zanetti
Iniesta
Zidane
Pirlo
Messi
Ronaldo
Ronaldo

Subs

Kahn
Nesta
Seedorf
Nedved
Rivaldo
Ronaldinho
Batistuta

I've probably missed somebody obvious. What's yours?

I'd like to see a best 90s, 00s and 10's XI and see which is better. No repeat players allowed.

Jeez remember Kaka. He had a spell where he was on the verge of becoming one of the best.

Zidane and Brazil ronaldo are two that go straight in.

Two players who just don't lose the ball. Ever.

You forget just how gifted Ronaldinho truly was - unsurpassed even by Messi and Ronaldo for technical ability with the ball.

Could have been the best ever if he had the dedication of those two.

I put him on the bench. Yes he was unreal, but had 3 better in my team

This is my one massively unpopular opinion. I think Ronaldinho was overrated and certainly wouldn't put him in the same band as Ronaldo, Zidane, Messi, etc. Rated Figo higher too. Brazilian Okocha imo - though Okocha was actually great.

Totti > Pirlo as well.

Fuck me, I'm ruffling feathers tonight.

Absolutely loved watching Guardiola
Redondo and Del piero as well, but looking at the names they would do well to get on the bench

No I agree - Messi and Ronaldo deservedly are held in a higher bracket because they've maximised their potential and achieved more than Ronaldinho should have in my opinion.

I have a mate who routinely travels out to Rome to watch them play so Totti is literally his hero and his longevity and dedication to Roma should be massively commended here.

Defence is probably the hardest to call. I'd put forward Nesta as having a shout here, classy defender.
