Townsend has tweeted that he's in bed with flu.
Unfortunate timing as with Bale out he may have seen some game time. Hopefully he'll recover in time to play against Coventry

With Townsend out (I would have started him on the left):

------------------------ Lloris -------------------------
Naughton---- Dawson ------ Caulker ------ Verts
-------------- Parker -------- Dembele -------------
Lennon -------------Dempsey----------- Sigurdsson
------------------------ Defoe -------------------------

Reasoning: This is the best way to score as many goals as possible with the players we have available. Sandro gets a rest, Walker gets to clear his head. Hopefully this is the last match Vertonghen has to play at LB with BAE returning soon. Sigurdsson is MUCH better at keeping out wide and he does track back well. Him cutting in from the left has been dangerous in his cameos as well. Demspey and Defoe just need to make it work. If either are ineffective, Adebayor will be there to come in off the bench and provide a little something different than either do.

I'm predicting defoe hat-trick against Reading. This team has conceded 3+ goals away in the last 5 games.

I might go with the same team, but didn't AVB say that BAE might be back for the Reading game? If so I would take Dawson out, move Verts to CB and play Benny LB.

Whatever team we pick, we should be able to put 4 or 5 goals past Reading if we play well.

He said he might be back. I took it more as him possibly making the bench, but that Coventry would probably be his real return with an eye on getting him fit for QPR.

I'm sure Defoe will start but the reason I don't think he should, as many of us constantly point out, is that his movement is good enough against sides who park the bus. He's scored 4 in 10 home games and that's not good enough for a striker who brings little else. Maybe he'll have another barnstormer like against the spammers but I'd rather not take the risk. We need to score in the first half. Reading have 2 clean sheets in a row and I can easily see another Stoke

There is no comparison between those two sides defensively, Reading might have stopped the rut recently but they're still very poor defensively. Stoke have the best defense in the League - two extremes right there.

No excuses, three points are an absolute must tomorrow, and only then do our two away wins look significant.

And Ade scored 0 and assisted 0 at home (1 goal 0 assist total), and thats not good enough for any striker period. Even if the opposition park the bus, all JD need is a clever pass and he will make the most of it, cause his movement this season has been great. (AvB have done a great job with JD imo).

I used to be JD's biggest critic, but this season he is like a new player, running lot more to.

At home we need fast attacking wide options both sides. I'd put Falque wide left. Got a feeling he will put Dempsey in for Ade. Parker may have to wait to the Coventry game to get a start. Dembele, Sandro or whoever starts centrally need to kick in with a few goals the central contribution goal wise from us is a bit pathetic this season. Reckon he will persist with Walker and Naughton as full backs putting in Gallas and Vert centrally.
...........Lloris
Walker Gallas Vert Naughton
Lennon Sandro Dembele Falque
............Dempsey
....................Defoe

I think Reading will try and play a Stoke-kind of football with all men behind the ball when not in possession. They are obviously a poorer side than Stoke, but that kind of play have proved to be effective against us so far this season.

With that in mind I honestly think we should revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation for this match, starting Adebayor instead of Defoe and rather subbing the latter on when the Reading players are getting tired and the game opens up. We'll have a bigger chance of playing through with the likes of Sigurdsson and Adebayor than relying on Defoes pace and shooting. He won't have any space to run at in this game anyway.

Lloris
Walker - Gallas - Vertonghen - Naughton
Parker - Dembele
Lennon - Sigurdsson - Dempsey
Adebayor
I have to be honest here and say I haven't had time to check injuries but I'm going to assume Dempsey is fit. If BAE is fit or we have another feasible alternative for the LB spot I want Naughton to start on the right back to rest Walker.

Well, if Townsend, Bale and Dempsey are scuppered for the game, who do we have on the Left?

Ade ----- Defoe
Falque - Dembele - Parker - Lennon
Naughton - Vertonghen - Dawson - Walker
Lloris

Can't for BAE to come back :)

okay, this is difficult with all the injury misinformation, but I think BAE is gonna start vs coventry. so here goes:

Hugo
naughton gallas caulker verts
parker sandro
lennon dembele falque
adebayor

this way walker, defoe, and dawson are not overplayed in the short schedule. Defoe is effective as super sub, so bring him on for Dembele around the 60th minute so he can rest that hip. Falque gets in by default on the wing. Siggi can come in for Sandro when the game is under control. Verts, Sandro, Lennon, Dembele, and Adebayor can rest for the Coventry game...

with Bale out and the injury to Dempsey (confirmed?) it screws the team up, so I thought I'd go for an odd line up. COYS!!!

(BTW - Lewis Holtby is left footed and could've fit right in today :sneaky: )

Would love to see Siggy start. Been impressed with his cameos the last few weeks.

I agree, but he does not look good out on the wing, so I didn't put him in my starting 11 :(

I think his last couple of assists have come from the left. I quite like him there although admittedly I haven't seen him there for a whole game.
