I'm actually beginning to think that Benteke was always our main target and that Villa was more of a target of opportunity in that we heard Barca wanted to sell and so took the opportunity to make a move for a genuine world class striker.

Could well be right but hasn't AVB courted Villa for a long time? Like when he was at Chelsea etc

Its a good point... The closest I could come up with is that these are both predominantly penalty box strikers who do most of their work in and around there.

Most of our buys are clearly opportunistic I think. Not a great amount of planning goes into shaping the team in my opinion. I thought we were unbalanced and didn't tick enough boxes last year, the way things are going it will be the same this year if we don't make 3-4 more signings.

Nothing is clear yet for this season though. People are assuming an order with our targets given what they hear first, its not necessarily the case. There could be a multitude of factors here we aren't privy to that affects the timing of when we hear stuff about deals...agents etc, players on holiday, the selling Club's stance...list goes on and on.

I'm sure you are, but it looks like he was actually talking about a poster called Genius Greaves (I actually bothered to look for myself seeing as you useless bastards were about as much help as a chocolate fireguard)

Anyway this is what 'Genius' said...

Jedjav will join us in January 2014 & Halilovic will join us next summer.

Both are 17 & will join us when they are 18 years of age and not before. No, we are buying them but allowing them to remain at Zagreb until they are 18. I did understand that most of the paperwork had been done & only a few t's to be crossed.

Just so it’s all in the same place, this was LLM’s reply….

Genius is spot on as usual.

We are messing about a little bit on the finer details of the deal. For example a payment on potential senior international caps.

no need to press the panic buttons just yet.

That was widely known to be the case with this deal

Find it odd if we're thinking of splurging £20m+ on Benteke yet have spent literally years fighting over fees on any Damaio deal.

Time and again these big deals that get mooted are revealed to have fallen apart when our bids have come in well under a club's valuation. This isn't a criticism, it just makes it hard to believe we'll be at the front of the queue for someone like Benteke & that we will look the best option to Villa.

I think Damaio is perhaps seen as more of a risk that Benteke, who at least now has some premiership experience.

Pray this is true; we would potentially have two class players coming through which could save us 40-50 million in future fees.

I'd prefer Ba over Benteke. Not because Ba is obviously a better player, even though I think he has more to his game than Benteke, but rather because we'd probably be able to pick him up for about £5mill, leaving us with funds to strengthen the squad elsewhere.

Benteke would represent a significant outlay, £17mill on Paulinho and £20 mill on Benteke would probably be our lot for the summer, and, considering our rivals are strengthening as well, I'm not sure it'll be enough to fire us back into the top 4.

Don't know how long AVB has courted Villa for, but if it has been a long while then it's possible our Villa bid may have been opportunistic on two fronts. Try for a genuine world class striker and to keep AVB sweet.

Paulinho is a good player, but wasn't a priority. That 17 million could have been topped up to fund the Leandro, saldado or benteke signings. Does anyone believe we'll spend more than 20 million on a striker now?

Huddlestone is 26, played for England last year, should be 8 million.

england are rubbish.

what would that 8 million get me if i was a prem manager? A player who can't score, never has gotten many assists, is too slow for the league to be a CM in a 4-4-2 ( and yes before anyone says anything i realise he had 4 or 5 good games once along side modric back in the bronze age) and also a player who has injury problems.

3 million and i'd deal

I think that's a little unfair. The guy has still played roughly 200 games in the last 5 years. Not bad for a dodgy knee.
Point is that we've already got a Ba type in Defoe, both players offer little all round game.

Noice. Really excited about these Croats. Hope Levy pulls it (them) off (wa-hey!).

Nonsense. The fact that Ba is a tall lanky powerhouse, built like a heavyweight boxer, means he'd add a dimension to our play that Defoe the midget never will.

I understand why they are different values...thats obvious.

What isnt so clear is what our strategy is. They are very different players, very different ages, very different in pretty much all ways.

You would at least expect the second choice to be vaguely similar to the first. Just looks to me as if we're wildly casting about for any sort of striker which I dont necessarily think is the best approach.

Gotcha, and don't necessarily disagree. What we don't know, though, is if they were mutually exclusive targets or we've "moved on" to Benteke because he's now formally requested a transfer. So rude of the club not to just send us all a list of who we're after:)

All of your points seem reasonable to the majority of us.

None of them will make half a bollock of difference.

Allow me to remind you that you are a Spurs fan. Spurs!

It doesn't work that way around here boyo!

What we do is buy midfielders and plenty of em. Then ask for way to much money for our deadwood and end up paying their wages to go on loan for a few seasons until they leave on a free. Then we over haggle until we miss out on our main targets and make loads of excuses and highlight the midfielders we have signed. Then finally we over perform until Christmas or thereabouts then fail to do anything worthwhile in the January window and eventually finish 5th.

Has been frustrating, just hope this summers different for them factors I listed, and hope the board see that aswell.
