Blasts from the past. I was at the Lane when Ally Dick made his debut. Probably his finest moment.

Back in those days it really was 1 to 12, with a single sub. Whereas now, with multiple subs, it's much easier in principle to ease young players into top flight football. It also means if a youngster is having a mare, it's easier to give them the hook.....

Halilovic has really quick feet and the ball sticks to them. He's only a little taller than Lennon at the moment, but we have some big strong midfieilders, so I could see him coming on for Lennon late in games. If we sign him, and don't loan him back....

I was at the Lane the day Dick made his debut too. Can't remember a thing about it, think he came on and played left wing didn't he ? I remember he was highly thought of, but no idea what happened to him.

Yeah, if none of these issues exists, we should sign him.

So, why haven't we?

Let him develop for free at Dinamo, he and his issues no matter if, what or who they are shouldn't be of our concern untill he's good enough to earn a place in our first team anwyay.

We'll have to agree to differ.

Buying Gareth Bale was quite possibly the best decision in the modern history of Tottenham Hotspur. If we had waited, the likelihood is that we would have missed the boat.

Likewise Halilovic - even if he does, quite literally, come with baggage. We have clearly identified him as a player of outstanding potential. If we don't get him now, the chances are that another club will. Our opportunity will be gone.

And it might prove to be a decision we bitterly regret.

He drifted out of the first team picture with us and eventually got a cheap (free?) move to Ajax.

Sadly, wiki tells me his career after that includes such famous clubs as the Frankston Pines and Morwell Faclons.

I kid you not:

I can only remember him from the video of his substitute appearance in the 1984 UEFA Cup final, second leg.

Had a 'mare.

Ball bounced off him like he was a pinball machine bumper..........every time. Ran around like a headless chicken.

Maybe it was just one of those games for him but my guess is that what happened to him was that he just wasn't good enough!

That's true, you win some, you lose some, I'll agree to that.

But as I've hopefully made clear, my decision on whether or not to invest in this guy is only based on the baggage, not on his talent.

If he's not willing to make the step up and come here he doesn't have the ambition we require or he's not really that interested in our club, and in both those cases I don't want him.

I will not accept my Tottenham being held to ransom by some 17 year old kid and/or his father. We have better training facilities, we have better conditions to get money, fame, whatever he desires, he has been given the opportunity, it's his choice whether or not to grab it..

Because for once I think we need players to make an immediate impact and if this kid is as good as everyone says and is a star of the future then great, I'd love to sign him and develop him. But it doesn't excite me because it doesn't improve us in the short term and for once that's how I'm thinking. About the now. It doesn't help us get 3rd or 4th this year. Doesn't mean it's a bad deal, doesn't mean he's overrated, doesn't mean I don't want him. But Coentrao excites me. Willian excites me. Lamela excites me. He just makes me think "I'll keep an eye on him if we sign him". See my post in the Eriksson thread for more of an elaboration.

Signings like this excite me the most. Like signing Modric when we did or Bale when we did. Because generally I know it is the best way we may get to watch a truly top class player - even if it means waiting and developing his potential. This summer we've changed our MO a bit and the arrival of more than one top class, ready to roll first teamer has maybe spun perspectives on their head a little, but this is still the most likely route and the most enjoyable for me, watching a player's metamorphosis from outstanding potential to top drawer.

We'll buy him, he'll break through into the first team after 5 months, make Modric look second division, we'll fall in love with him, sing songs about him, then, after two years, he will want to go to Real Barcelona, go on strike, we'll hate him, boo him and then sell him!

Deja Vooooo anyone!!!

The is a sad part of watching a player become top class. As things stand you now he will always be moved up the food chain by greedy agents, greedy clubs (both buyer and seller sometimes) and naked ambition of the player himself.

The trick is to accept our place on the football food chain (even as it evolves for the better), accept it and maximise our part in it.

This is why Halilović's are vital.

Me too. Ali Dick on one wing a Richard Cook on the other. The guy I went with used to say 'typical Spurs - a pair of Dicks on either wing!'. When he came down from Scotland he was going to turn into the star. Didn't happen for him.

But for ages you did nothing but moan about 'chocolate soldier' Bale!

So you can't enjoy it that much BC?

Wonder if us signing that Todor guy (as hinted by Grey Fox) will mean that we drop our pursuit of Halilovic. They are perhaps not identical in style but both seem to be left footed RWs that like a shot at goal.

I was at Carrow Road to see Ally Dick make his debut! Shit where does life go!

He made his debut at home to ManC. You're thinking of the time you went to Carrow road and shouted at Hoddle "football's a simple game stop trying to back spin the ball" and made an ally Dick of yourself.

Mmmm would have been one of his first games then as I remember him being just 16.

But it was simple for Hoddle to put back spin on the ball! Were you the guy near me writing down how any times the ball boy on our left wing touched the ball?
