The Soldado debate

Pav! (n)

Bad example. Pav didn't look like a striker, he had no coolness or composure in front of goal. He scored the occasional screamer, but to me his technique always seemed a bit 'put your foot through the ball and hope for the best'.

Soldado looks a lot more savvy with his finishing (not that we'd know) :D

Not the best comparison, I just feel Soldado does not have the physical attributes to be consistently successful in the Premier League similar to Pav's physical attributes. He does not have much pace and is extremely weak. His strength is supposed to be his technical ability, which has not been great thus far, other than a couple of well taken penalties.

Biggest mistake we made in the transfer window was not upping our bid and paying the price for Benteke. We could have offered Villa 26.5 million for Benteke and gotten him.

Early times for Soldado but he reminds me a lot of Pav. Clinical finisher but too slow and weak to cut it in this league.

i know people are bored of hearing about benteke but he was just so obviously the right striker to sign, hopefully we finish in the top 4 this season and then nab him next summer. i liken the signing of soldado to that of buying a new car, you know that once you've driven it out of the showroom you've already lost 30% on the price you paid, so unless he delivers big time, we're only going to get -ev on our return. ultimately though, as long as the team carries on picking up results then as fans, it doesn't matter whether soldado goes 0 for 38 or 20 for 38 over the season.

Fixed, but my point still stands (y)

What point?

Defoe has scored an average of two goals per game against weak, cup competition opposition.

Soldado has also scored an average of two goals per game against weak, cup competition opposition.

And if Defoe had taken those 2 penalties and missed we would be 4 points worse off.
Defoe is a greedy fcuker, yes he scores but not always when there are better options.
Better impact sub with 30mins to go.
And he did miss a very good chance to win it for us on saturday.

I saw Soldado do the most crazy bit of ball control when he was warming up at half time v villa causing both me and my villa supporting mate to both exclaim at the same time. He's going to be amazing for us! He hasn't even missed any sitters yet.

Soldado is a class player as we all know. The one thing he will never be short of is self-confidence though, so like all excellent players, he'll just play through a dry spell and then he'll start scoring and won't be able to stop. Glad we have him on board.

Not worried at all. The only thing I do slightly worry about is he's got to get used to a lot of different combinations of players. You'd imagine lamela will be one of the first names on the team sheet in a month or so and he's barely played with him. Plus we have loads of other talented players who he hasn't played with much that can come in at the drop of a hat. This is why they train and this is why we pay AVB. He'll come good

its the same as last season. we are playing better football but still not feeding our strikers at all. its why i never joined the ade and defoe hate brigade as it was clear to me that they were just completely isolated. when you have 2 inverted wingers and the rest of the team taking 35 yrd pot shots, any striker is going to struggle unless they are a suarez or aguero who constantly create their own chances.

Agreed.

I reckon the Anzhi game could be the perfect opportunity to play Soldado and Lamela in the same team, then use Defoe and Townsend against West Ham. Defoe does have his purple patches so it would be nice to see if he can continue scoring when he starts a PL game.

I think Soldado is the better player compared to Defoe, and I think he has made a good contribution when he has played, but Defoe can be deadly when he gets in a bit of form and having a guy scoring goals on the pitch is always handy. If he can keep up that production I would rather see it in the PL and let Soldado play a more intelligent form of attack against continental opponents... just for a couple of games anyway.

Again, someone has misread my point. I'm not saying Defoe is "good enough to be our main striker", I'm saying he deserves to start one game based on his form, if he does well he gets another game, if he fails to deliver Soldado comes back in. In my view Soldado would also benefit from playing against Anzhi, where he could get more familiar with his team mates.

No, he hasn't. Your point was that Defoe has scored 'shitloads of goals', which, as far as the EPL is concerned, is manifestly, demonstrably false. He's scored six goals against extremely weak opposition—great! But has it not crossed your mind that, against the deadbeats of Tbilisi and Tromso, and Villa's 'B' team, Soldado might not have done as well or better? Your statement that he 'deserves to start on form' is therefore meaningless. You really haven't seen enough of Defoe since 2004 to have a pretty good idea of what to expect?

Apart from which, if Soldado hasn't exactly set the EPL alight so far, he's hardly been a disaster area either. Again, Berbatov took a good half-season to get acclimatised (it was November before he got his second league goal, remember?), and Suarez a season-and-a-half to really get motoring. It's not an exact science: Papiss Cissé looked the absolute nuts for half a season, and had many on here asking why we didn't sign him; then he turned into Eeyore.

I knew it would not be long until the "we should have signed Benteke" and "Soldado is not good enough" comments

We sign a proven, international and some would say, world-class striker and probably the only one remotely achievable in the transfer window and yet people still complain. I don't know what Levy has to do to please some fans.

Yes, maybe he is lacking a bit of confidence but for people to be writing him off already is deplorable.

I watched an youtube video where an Arsenal fan said that when we completely gel by Christmas, he will be very worried and nervous. He is right, once we completely gel as a team I am sure Soldado will be scoring quite a lot of goals.

Sigh...

Maybe because Defoe is yet to start a Prem match? So let me ask you a question, do you think Soldado is in better goalscoring form than Defoe? That's all I'm saying my long word using friend.

If brains were money, some people would start off with an overdraft.
