You'd like to think so, but I suspect it won't be the case.
Up until last night he was easily a £75-80 million player.
A season long ban (which simply won't happen) would still see him return next year aged 28 and more than capable of winning games single-handedly for teams. Liverpool won't sack him while there is still money to be made.

It's incomparable to Chelsea sacking Mutu as that was for drug offences (and he only scored 6 in 27 for them).
Chelsea also then sued Mutu (successfully) for loss of earnings to the club. Because he then joined Juventus (via Livorno) both clubs also had to pay a portion of money.

Can you really see Liverpool sacking him and then demanding the equivalent of a transfer fee from him if he signs elsewhere at the end of the ban???

To be honest I'm surprised Liverpool haven't already issued a statement defending him and saying that somehow it's all Patrice Evra's fault.

I expect to see Rodgers making excuses for him pretty soon after the tournament finishes. Perhaps they'll get Dalglish out to further defend their darling little beaver.

There is a school of thought that FIFA will want to use this to boost their own standing at the moment. All the corruption stuff etc...here's an opportunity to demonstrate their high standards for fair play etc.
Yeah ... i heard someone saying last night on the news "He has single handedly brought the World Cup and FIFA into disrepute" ...

He should be getting absolutely pilloried by Liverpool and Uruguay fans which is why I don't understand the support he gets.

He missed the start of this season with Liverpool because of last year's bite, and with a few more of his goals at the start of the season who knows what that might have meant for the title race.

And Uruguay now go into the second round of the World Cup without their best player, because he has absolutely no self-control.

It really is odd that he gets so much support.
According to talksport there isn't much furore about this in the international press and the disgust is mainly coming from england

Are even the Italians not bovvered?

Maybe they're right. We're the nutters here. They must all come over to London to click pics of Tower Bridge etc and go home with tales of a weirdo nation. "I wasn't bitten even once over there."

Bryan Swanson on Sky Sports News just confirmed that FIFA can ban Suarez from all forms of football, so there is a good chance that he will be banned for Liverpool as well.

And when was the last time they excersised this right? There's zero chance of this happening. He bit a guy on the shoulder, and he'll be justly banned for a few international games, but you're setting yourself up for a fall if you think it's going to be any more than that.

There's more of a furore here because he plays his club football here AND because it happened here previously.
To everyone else it's just "oh, he bit someone on the shoulder", because they haven't been privy to his antics over the last few seasons.

The key is whether they are able to look at previous misdemeanours and take that into account when dealing out the ban.

If you simply keep giving players 8 game bans then they'll keep doing the same thing again and again. An 8 game international ban won't stop him doing it again.

I think you're right and he'll just get an international ban of a few games, but I really don't see how that deals with the problem at all.

I think English Premiership football is watched closely all round the world. We aren't "privy" to it just because it happens here, and I'm sure most football fans will know about his history.

But mostly they don't support teams directly in competition with Liverpool, so they don't care as much as we do.

I think it will be a 12 games international ban from competitive matches. Which would ban him for effectively two years and him missing the Copa America

Perhaps the police in Brazil have better things to do right now than worry about a millionaire nipping another millionaire on the shoulder in a sporting game?

aptopix_brazil_rio_violence_xfd102_42525381.jpg

Not really an issue for the police though is it. They can only stop the protestors to a degree, but frankly the protestors have more than a civic right to take to the streets and demand some changes.

Liverpool - or at least the owner - must be furious at him. This must knock a huge amount off his transfer value.

What i don't get in all of this is how he's isn't charged with assault? If i went and bit someone i was competing against in a work environment i'm sure that would be the first thing that happened.

Frankly he should be on his third striker for assault charges and looking at prison time like the rest of us would be right now.

Then FIFA/FA/UEFA or whoever can easily ban him from their respective competitions due to the fact he's a convicted criminal.

There's a huge double standard going on here. Players routinely go in for - illegal - tackles that threaten other player's careers and get no ban at all even retrospectively. I'd much rather se them punished severely.

I remember when Defoe bit Mascherano, I don't recall a single one of you lot espousing your faux disgust or calling for him to banned for a year.

But will they do that? If they just ban him from internationals, that would greatly enhance Liverpool's bid to stay among the top 4.

Yeah but Defoe hadn't been racist, done it twice before and been a **** at the previous world cup. Oh, and Suarez dives a lot.
