He is an Irish Republican and refuses to wear the poppy on Remembrance week. The poppy thing is very offensive to a lot of us. He should stay out of politics and just play football. Great player on his day by the way.

You obviously do not have a clue about where James comes from and why he refuses to wear a poppy. I think you need up your research a bit more before making stupid insinuations.

Not sure wether to admit this but I actually think Shawcross is a decent defender :bag:

I'm with ya. Honestly surprised at the extent of the reaction here, and I expected it'd be negative once I saw the explanation. He's not an exciting continental player, but I think he's a kind of player we're lacking. Lotta nice fellas in the squad, and no one unreserved to **** off his mates if they aren't doing their jobs.

I'm all for having the kind of players who bring the creativity as I was an attacking mid myself, but a good Prem side needs a nasty **** or two to keep everyone focused and in line. Not opposed were this to happen, especially since I can't imagine he'd be expensive and would thereby free up funds for elsewhere.

In regards to shawcross I'd be disappointed if he was one of our main cb targets. It says a lot that in this time where there are a dearth of top English centre backs, I never heard anyone suggest shawcross should have been in the mix for our World Cup squad. And we took chris fucking smalling...

Get the feeling we are overdoing the whole EPL experience this window

Probably more of a look towards homegrown status.

^ This. As of right now, we're two over the foreign player count to register. Without the bids coming in, we simply have no choice but to go homegrown if we want to add if players aren't going. Only two players we've sold as of yet this summer are both homegrowns, so those didn't help either.

He may not be 'expensive' in the modern game, but for what he'd go for he'd be too expensive for me. I can't see stoke letting him go for any less then 10-12 million. He's their captain, never injured, entering his prime years, plus there's the English premium to add on. And I say 10-12 mil as a bare minimum. Not saying I agree, just what they'd ask for

Edit - Eric_s, curious as to what you find wtf worthy in this? You disagree with proposed fee or my reasoning?

Yeah you're probably right in your quoted valuation, but he'd still be cheaper than some of the continental names we've been linked to and we wouldn't have to try and push another foreign player out to get it done.

Genuinely surprised at the reaction here. The guy is not a poor defender. He may not be the flashy ball-playing time we like in the modern game or have a sexy name, but he still gets it done and is a grounded leader. My only personal quip with him is I think his disciplinary record isn't great. Could be far, far worse, but a yellow card in every five games with a side that sits so many in front of the fox does add a bit of risk with a high line and more exposed CB's.

I'm all for a bit of nastiness at the back, we started to look like Bob Paisley's description of us as the "Drury Lane Dancers" again last season.

On FIFA maybe, but not in reality. He's an upgrade to Dawson, even if he's not the greatest defender we could go after.

He's as agricultural as a combine harvester though, which isn't the way we're going to be playing at all.

Shawcross would be the sort of player who would be top of the list if Sherwood or Harry were still in charge

Thank god JJ killed this ITK

I dunno, JJ isn't the oracle, he could easily be wrong or not know.

I'm intrigued that after last year, we've just signed two Premier League players and we're now getting links with the better CBs from lesser PL clubs in Vlaar and Shawcross.

Trouble is, our league isn't over blessed with trendy or desirable, but potentially available CBs...

No doubt Jj has an excellent source, but I'm not sure why his every comment is taken as scripture in that exact moment in time, just as with what occurred with Davies. The Goat may have a different source, and one that's heard something more recently. Jj is great ITK, but that doesn't necessarily define impending results later down the line.

Shawcross could be a good signing, we do need a good hard centre back as verts is more the pretty type.

Plus we are a team of pusseeeees on occasions... Many occasions...

As long as we get a dcent centre back then i am happy.

Kaboul may even recover now but thats a bit risky to rely on.
