Got to say I feel sorry for JJ sometimes. Yes he's connected, but he's also a fan. I come here because I love talking about spurs with other fans. He comes in, posts one thing and is immediately asked questions about what he knows never gets a chance to merely have a debate, and thus rarely posts around here anymore. :-(

Sounds like he needs a dan the yid style name change

I'd agree with the injecting a bit of experience and steal into the team - but surely we have a few capable of stepping up? Lloris is the French captain so surely has the leadership qualities! I think this is a big season for Vertonghen as well thinking about it. If he expects CL or a 'big' team to come calling then he needs to showcase an ability to lead and command for someone of his age.

I've mentioned a few times that we need a similar player to Kaboul (athletic CB) to complement Vertonghen and Vlad (technical cb) - id priorities this over a purely leadership man...might as well keep our club captain in Dawson for the moral support if his happy to play 5th fiddle!

I can't see us signing shawcross. He completely goes against the whole ethos of tottenham hotspur.

So did the likes of Dave Mackay - great player who dominated the opposition who feared him, but not the silky smooth player that we wre renowned for at the time.

We need the modern day Dave Mackay

I can understand why people won't like us signing Shawcross. But I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with us showing "interest", which is all this apparently is.

He ticks a lot of boxes. What if there was any reason that would make him available for just a few million? Say we knew he could move for less than an amount we'd been offered for Dawson? Or that he would be cheaper than Lovren (he is), Vlaar (he might be), Caulker (he probably is), or anyone else.

Showing an interest is a world away from an offer, which is a world away from a deal. If you're unhappy with our current CB selection, I don't get why you could possibly object to any "interest" in Shawcross. Why not at least ask a question? It isn't like there's a load of homegrown Beckenbauer's out there.

Lloris was an outstanding player for us last season - but whatver leadership material he was showing, we need more players to show leadership, and we didn't have them last season (other than Dawson probably) which is why we need to buy them now

I think it is completely worth asking the question.....we need to target a CB which means you need to figure out who is available.....we should be asking questions to numerous teams and seeing what is available, what is workable and what is a pipe dream.

We check on Shawcross to see if he is available, doesn't mean we aren't checking with other teams on other players....If we know Shawcross is available it means that if other negotiations go down the shitter then at least we know a fallback signing is available or not.

And that is most certainly not Shawcross. He is a faux-tough guy.

He's clumsy and reckless rather than brave and determined.

It is a massive insult to MacKay to compare him with Shawcross

At least there has been some itk on a cb, rightly or wrongly.. glad that JJ has shot it down.. My theory is who ever Pochettino has interest in for CB is either involved in the CL qualifiers & his club won't sell until they have qualified for qroup stage or we have to wait until his club sign a replacement.

There's no need for someone like him at spurs, Sandro, Kaboul and Paulinho got sent off every time they tackled someone anywhere near the way stoke does

That's why I think certain players in the squad need to step it up!

If we can buy them in then great (Pirlo Pirlo Pirlo) - but i'd actually like the idea of us signing a younger athletic player who has captained under 21s and shown he has the attributes to lead. Ledley, Dawson, Ugo, Lloris, Poch to name a few would be fantastic role models to young players. Unless of course Kaboul is a big uncertainty for managing the season and that would change my view

I'm becoming convinced that Chiriches is being seen as 4th choice now, with a Dawson replacement fighting it out with Kaboul for a place next to Vertonghen. May be why rumours of his departure. Confuses me slightly but I guess Pochettino doesnt think him and Vertonghen would work as a pair. Also I don't think Chiriches can play the left CB position, which makes pairing him with Kaboul questionable if Vertonghen was injured.

Well, tbf if he posted more I don't think people would go on so much. Grey fox has info on things as did/ does breezer. But people don't hassle them. If he came into a match thread and started posting for example!! It's been done to death really. He could post under a different name? But wishes not to.

Someone at some point suggested molding Sandro into a CB. I think that could be worth a shot. Defensively Sandro is one of the best around. Offensively not so much. Why not focus on his strengths? It would solve our CB problem and appease all the Sandro lovers who want him to stay. This is just my opinion but I think after the injury he could benefit from playing in a less athletic role in defense as opposed to the midfield.

Well, if we had that we'd probably be a pretty great side.

Edit: for what its worth, it sounds like we are going for defenders who are good at organising a defence rather than leaders.

Michael Dawson
Ron Vlaar aka Michael Dawson mk2
Ryan Shawcross aka Michael Dawson mk3

I can see where this is going...

To me the CB is more important than signing someone like Griezmann. If we were even willing to go near his release clause I think the same amount should be spent on a CB. There's such a shortage of quality CBs currently, the price tags of anyone decent is gonna be stupid anyhow.
