Not overly concerned whether we get Schneiderlin & Rodriguez. Both credit their success to Pochettino's coaching. Every time I've seen them, they are both effective without being speculator which suggests me that they're good players, valued more highly thanks to Pochettino's system.
In terms of Schneiderlin, I'd prefer we didn't discount our existing options so quickly. They had to contend not only with injuries but with a manager who didn't really understand the DM role. I've already seen an improvement in Capoue in pre-season under Poch. He's not yet worked with Paulinho, Dembele, Bentaleb etc. Sandro left pre-season early so we've yet to see him play in a warm up game.
I want Poch to get all the players he wants but suspect that, if we don't get these two, it won't impact us like Moutinho with AVB.
Well we've clearly been in negotiation with them for the last 24 hours and have not got near what they've wanted...otherwise they could of released this statement much quicker.
They have to project a strong message to ensure that they can still compete ably themselves in the transfer market as who would want to go to a sinking ship which is selling all their assets!
My view. Players want to come. Players have agreed terms. We haven't offered enough and with Southampton fans up in arms they've put the phone down on Daniel now.
Not that easy. They have started something now. No point keeping pissed off players or allowing Rodriquez to run down his contract. Might as well continue to cash in and try to rebuild (if that's what they ever intended).
Cant say I'd be devastated if we didn't get them. Southampton had half a decent season last year, and there must be 2 other decent players available for @£30\£35m - or else keep our money and go with what we've got.
If they really are not for sale, then I hope we don't waste the next weeks chasing them.
Coz of the mess over the last 12months, We still don't know how good half our squad actually is!
It wouldn't be too bad if Twitter was just outlawed completely in this thread, even OfficialSpurs and JJ. Give them an inch and they take a mile, I personally think @Archibald&Crooks has gone a bit soft and if they want a mile, he should give them a mile..... of unlubricated spikey "fun" time.
Southampton board look like they are trying to hold onto their players; both hand transfer requests and refuse to play which makes the players look bad and the board look at no fault for the exodus.
Southampton are facing a huge fan backlash.
Chairmen tells the world these two players are not actively being sold and are wanted at Southampton.
Saves a little face in front of fans (ships probably already sailed though..) as they are not playing ball in regards to more outgoings.
Players hand in transfer request and kick up a fuss as per recent ITK.
This shifts some blame from the selling club on to greedy, unappreciative, modern players.
Original stance has driven the asking price up a little.
The transfer request makes it slightly better financially.
Difficult to take him seriously, Saints have pretty much said they would not sell players, then they sold Lambert and Lallana..that was that until Shaw went...then they would not sell anymore right up until Lovren and Chambers went. He is blowing hot air out of his backside.
How does it get turned around from here though after that declaration???
I think it'll be like it often is with Spurs - we say we won't sell but then when we get an acceptable offer we turn around and say 'the player wanted to go, we couldn't keep him here if he wasn't committed, he'd had his head turn yada yada ... but we've secured the best price possible in the interests of the football club'
Either way - a very bold statement that will really wind up both MS and JR in my opinion
