3 key incidents that made the difference:

Think Eriksen should have put us 1-0 up.
Kane should have looked up and put Chadli in for a tap in.
Bentaleb shocking on the ball.

First 20 minutes I was genuinely happy with how we were playing. We also definitely miss some expereince in midfield to pull us through those nervy phases.

I'm worried we're going to see a lot of that this season because Harry looked up and saw him, it should of been a no brainer. Poch needs to nip this in the bud immediately. Even Defoe would of squared that.

And that would of given us a huge lift on top of the confident start we had made. Decision making is so important and the very best players make better decisions more often than not, regardless of their style - something Harry is going to have to learn if he wants to evolve into a world class player.

Said it last season and will say again. Bentaleb not good enough. Costs us time and time again. Doesn't bring enough offensively either. No point in him whatsoever. Oh how we needed investment. AGAIN. We won't learn. No backbone. Game changes on one mistake.

Ben taken with another sloppy pass. Starting to expect one every game.

It was a good start. Both teams played on the slow side and were inviting the opposition on to them, but we looked the more assured and as if we knew what we were doing. Utd very much looked like a team that had half a dozen new faces. You sensed we had a chance...

The goal though has completely knocked the stuffing out of us, and really I would like to see a bit more guts and determination and belief in the second half. Get the ball down, play our game, keep working hard and press the opposition. At the moment its too easy for Utd.

Not sure what we do to change things bench-wise, in any case it will be a team effort to turn this around. Bentaleb has really had a catastrophic half though and needs subbing. One of those games where a player is literally doing nothing right.

Got to get at their back 5 more. They will definitely give away more chances. I think if we can find that composure we showed in first 20 mins we can get back into the game.

Just watched it again. After Bentaleb lost the ball he made no effort to win it pack. He didn't even break into a run to track the player who ran past him.

We are illustrating the consequence of not investing but hoping that a wim and a prayer strategy will deliver improvement. Unfortunately you need more than luck to progress.

Basically should be 0-0. We've done fine. Got punished for our cock up, while their keeper has already got away with two potential howlers. Fingers crossed half time perks is up again, as we were looking really good.

I really like Pochettino but he's making it difficult for himself... Lamela should've started on the wing, Dembele as CM and Trips ahead of Walker.

Get in Cambiasso ffs Levy

The team is mentally weak, we need leaders who have been around the block

But he played well against Arsenal and Chelsea so he's clearly the next Zinedine Zidane.

Looked good before the goal (which was a clusterfuck) and then went completely into our shell. I do worry about our character.

Chadli and Eriksen anonymous.

Dier and Bentaleb doesn't work. Quelle Surprise.

For the record, Eric Dier is having a fantastic game and is providing some much needed cover for the defenders but obviously the moaners on here can't see that.

I thought so as well, even in the pre season I thought he looked decent positionally and defensively, I just worried about his passing range. He has been ok so far.

Walker, Dembele and Dier have been our best players 3 players who all probably would not have been played by our fans (sensible fans would have played Dembele).

We never look a threat. Our sideways passing is so frustrating.

We genuinely look no different to what we did last year. The defending for their goal was piss poor.

Chadli just isnt the option for LW. He offers absolutely nothing.

Nothing apart from double digit goals from midfield in the pl.

Why do most fans on here have a memory that only lasts 45 minutes?

Given the amount of frustration on this thread, I'm not sure bringing Lamela on will improve the situation!!!

No need for major changes, we don't have too many options anyway, but I would like to see Alli given a good 25-30 minutes or so.

For the first time in a while I think our centre halves are looking decent. Toby is confident and aggressive, and I just get the impression Jan is happy alongside him. Dier in midfield is working to a degree, the problem is, when he wins the ball he is very, very basic in using it! To be expected though. The kid is a centre half. I think with a genuine defensive midfielder/screener if you will, in that position and a genuine pacey outlet in the attacking 3, we will see a pretty big improvement in our play, which is actually pretty good to be fair.

This game just further proves how much we need Berahino and Bender.

No pace, and a weak, inexperienced midfield.
