Agree mate in a big game against the top sides in yet to know if he can do the business in that position but Jose clearly has faith in him as he’s tried to buy him at man.u so hopefully he can become our matic.

Forget Matic. He just needs to become the old Dier again. He's done it here before. I'd love for Wanyama to be the old Wanyama too but alas injuries have destroyed him. If those two rekindled their old selves we'd have two of the best DMs around once again instead of relying on Harry Winks to do it on his own.

I know he can be the DM that Mourinho historically plays. I saw the evidence of that for a few seasons. However, today his distribution was haphazard and he gave away some needless free kicks. I thought his positional sense and effort today was excellent. Things will improve with more game I've no doubt. But doesn't he need to lose a few kilos?

He was actually fine today.

He misplaced loads of passes but the important thing was he actually realised this and made a change (or got advice from the touch line).

After a series of poor passes you could see he was frustrated with himself - he’s finding it tough, he’s very rusty and off the pace still, as you would expect.

What was great though was that he changed his game. Stopped looking to pass forwards. Stopped getting forward himself. He realised he was playing poorly, took a step back, played deeper and kept it simple by constantly laying it off to Winks or Toby to make the forward passes himself. What was important though was that he still kept showing for the ball as much as possible and didn’t hide.

Takes a lot to make a change mid game and it was great to see. He even shook his head and laughed sheepishly as Jose congratulated him at the end, clearly saying something along the lines of “gaffer that was shit”.

He needs to stay patient and so do we. He’s quite capable of becoming a very good player again but it will take time and games.

Obviously hasn't had a run of games to try and get into some form but I just don't see a top quality defensive midfielder in him. Sure, can do a job at times but not someone I'd want to be relying on. Just looks so cumbersome at times and really don't think it will be too hard to find someone better than him in that role.

Was never good enough and highly doubt he ever will be, he has regressed badly and unless Jose can work some miracle then clock is ticking on his spurs career

Played OK today other than his passing. He touched the ball more than any other Spurs players and ran the second most distance (behind Kane) too.

The problem is everyone expects their holding players to be Carrick like.....

There were a few players out there today that haven’t had a lot of 90min games this season, Dier obv being one of them (on top of his previous illnesses too), and they certainly looked tired around the hour mark. They all need game time, rhythm, and solid tactics to really bed this team down. When you think that we have Lloris, Jan, Ndombele, Sess and Lamela not even in the match squad today, for various reasons, then we really should start to see major improvements in results. Re-build? Nah, just re-energised.

Thought he was poor with the ball today but it's unfair to write him off without him having at least some sort of run in the side. Only thing that worries me with Dier is that I know he's been injured but I still can't think of the last game I thought he was great in. Hopefully he hasn't lost what he once had.

DMs like him don't tend to have standout performances very often.

Needs a run of games to get back up to speed before we judge him, I have my doubts whether he can be the DM we need though.

I can see Jose getting the very best out of Dier. He’ll make him believe he’s a beast in the middle. If he can do that then great. Something that seemed impossible for at least the last 12 months.

In the DM role, think Mourinho's requirements are someone who is intelligent with a physical presence, reads the game well, follows instructions and passing wise not a problem if he keeps it simple. Maybe he feels he can get that out of Dier who knows. Although I think he'd love someone in the Fabinho or Kante mould and the mobility and athleticism they have over Dier.

Did well breaking up the play. The turnovers will reduce and the passing will imprive with more games.

Interesting that he was more advanced than Winks albeit still in a holding midfield role. Winks barely crossed the centre circle.

Thought he did well considering his recent game time.

A few passes went astray, but I was glad to see him trying them, especially on his left foot.

Just needs games to get back his timing, match fitness and most importantly confidence.

His biggest asset is that he knows what to do when defending in our box, unlike many DMs.

As someone who used to play CM every Sunday morning, I can confirm that it is possible to cover every blade of grass on the pitch several times only for no fucker to actually notice the amount of work you've put in.
Gardeners just don't get the credit they deserve.
