He's hardly played over the last 18 months or so. Plenty of rust to be knocked off yet.

This is the key thing to remember about Dier at the moment, he’s really struggled with illness over the last 12 months, he’s going to be a while getting back to full fitness and form.

I was never Dier’s biggest fan when he was in form, but I know a lot of people felt he was key to our team and the way we played. Plus he’s a very useful player to have in the squad considering he can play two positions. I think a lot of people are being very harsh about his skill set and abilities. He’s not crap in either position by any means, Jose clearly rated the guy when he was at United, so I will be very surprised if he isn’t given a run in the team to get back into form.

He's been very poor every time this season except for Red Star. I know people will say he needs time to settle back in but we're trying to salvage something from the season and that's a big risk. I think we look much more solid in a 433 formation where I don't have such deep concerns about Dier's form, but it seems Jose wants to use our front 4 options. Dier seems to have lost so much pace that I really have to wonder if he can get anywhere close to his best. I'd be looking for a DM in January as a very high priority. In the meantime I think we'll always struggle with a pivot midfield because it leaves too much space to cover for the players we have to choose from and their relative skill sets.

I think Dier wasn't good for the first part of the game as were almost none of them. When they went on to concede two goals early, they needed something different, you don't need Dier's type of player as much at that point. So I don't think the early sub reflects as poorly on Dier as some would like it to, it's just responding to very different circumstances from 0-0 a few minutes earlier.

Jose made the right call. Sucks but justified as we won. These players should know what to expect from Jose.

Im glad Jose did something when we were 2-0 down. I know its kinda humiliating for a player to be subbed in first half...but so be it. Dier can handle it. And i think i remember Jose said something after the game that it was that Dier was all bad, he could have choose winks or one of the defenders and put Dier as a defender. It was just that he needed to bring on a more offensive and creative player to change things.
And thats fair enough.

I was genuinely baffled by Diers performance in the CL.
He's a sitting DM who should be just in front of the CBs filling up the space a traditional no10 takes up.

Why he was wandering off to close down is beyond me as it left that critical area empty.

If it was Jose's tactic he was right to apologise, if it was Dier thinking he was Kante and able to cover the whole middle then he deserved to get hooked.

Irrespective, when it's not working it's not working. Glad Jose has it in him to change it as soon as needed, even if it means hooking someone.

How do people think he done today? Thought for the majority of the game we were relatively in control so he was just sitting and suppose fine. However he looks so cumbersome and flat footed when teams attack us and I'm not sure he is offering much in terms giving the defence cover in those situations.

Not sure if Mourinho sees him as his Matic and feels he is the type to play the game in his head with good positioning/reading of situations and after a run of games he'll OK but I'm not really convinced. I really think we need and can do better in that position.

Today he touched the ball probably 5 times only all game.

He didnt shield the defence like what DMs should do.

He didnt make a single tackle

He didnt make incisive runs forward

He didnt make himself available for a pass from defence.

He allowed the opponents to shoot from the positions where he was supposed to be protecting.

If he was brpught on by Jose to protect the defence, then we might as well play Winks, because both won't protect the defence, but at least Winks contributes more to midfield.

Ponderous couldnt pass the ball forward more then two yards before misplacing it/ Better then in week but nowhere good enough and doesnt really protect his center backs but did make some good blocks

Like Ndombele today, looked like he running on fumes most of the game.

I hope he can get his fitness back, because while he has been at cm, our shape has looked better. Should look for an upgrade in January or give Skipp a chance

Was by no means a great performance by him at all. He just seems a little lost as to his role.

After a long spell injured and then virtually no game time awarded by the previous management team he is clearly not match fit, sharp or confident.

He will improve over the coming weeks, but even then it might not be good enough for the team.

He's at a real crossroads in his career. How he responds will either make him or break him.

Always seem to be 2-3 seconds behind were he needs to be. Shame really.

This is it. He’s like a really old three legged dog chasing a car.

He was so far behind the pace of the game. I don’t see how he comes back from this poor level personally. It’s a long way back and I don't think he’s got it in him.

Urgently need a DM in January. It’s absolutely vital.

Well, with the classic Primativ write off, I am sure we will see him improve no end in weeks to come ;)

It's a shame Skipp isn't built like a brick shit house. Despite him playing like a sloth on ketamine I just can't see Jose dropping a physical tank like Dier for a scrawny 19 year old Skipp.

Unfortunately, the guy who we’d be most likely to dupe into buying him is our manager.

I really hope he can catch up soon. He can’t get near an opposing player right now, unless he’s passing the all to them.

I'm hoping he gains some sharpness and sharpish.

As ATM he's not really fit for purpose, there was one point today where the ball was passed by a Bournemouth midfielder between the lines and it rolled a couple of feet in front of him at no great pace and you could see there was a thought he could get it but then he just lumbered back as if accepting his limitations. :(

I hope there's more to come but it's quite sad to see.
