Allowing 5 subs is a dreadful idea. Dreadful, for the little clubs and the clubs who have been promoted.
Imagine a small club playing one on the money giants. After an hour the small club bring on 5 unheard of subs to replace 5 unheard of ,tiring first teamers. At the same time the money giant club substitute 5 world stars with another 5 world stars. Sounds a bit over the top granted but it’s what will happen.

I agree for the most part but the system will hopefully also lead to more young talent getting a chance to prove themselves. Thats something I guess.

The comments in that are worth a read too. Lots of southampton fans saying all he is is a tackler and a negative passer of the ball. While we need to first bit, I don't think we need the second.

Also, it was Ancelotti who sold him at Bayern Munich interestingly enough.

Bayern dont usually do what manager wants in general. They have their own recruitment policy.
Regarding Southampton fans - most they are irked with him is, his instinctive desire to shoot on goal from 30 yards out. With a word from Jose, that can be ironed out.

Also, lets not forget, Southampton are a high intensity footballing side. Under Hassenhutl, They never waste a pass. They always look to press, always look to win & counter at pace. May be in such a side, his passing after winning the ball could be seen as negative.
But the same in a Mourinho side, may give him the additional time to make that easy pass out of transition.

That was the point I was making. It’s their main gripe with him. His passing is poor and he gives the ball away a lot. It’s not a new thing. Their fans have been saying it for a while.

Honestly, this isn’t the guy we need.

Watching him the other day, I was surprised at the range and ambition of his passing actually. It was far from negative, if anything he was trying too many ambitious passes.

As to whether he's what we need, I don't know. I like the fact that he's proven in the league, has leadership qualities and appears to be good at tackling and intercepting whilst still being able to play a bit. Not sure who else we can get that ticks most of those boxes and only has a year or less left of contract and is therefore going to be relatively cheap.

Takeaway IMO is, he may not be perfect for the way they play - doesn't mean he will not work for us.
As good as Matic ever been, I dare say, he will get the same review from Southampton as, Matic is a slow passer. But doesn't mean he is a bad DMF.

What we need someone to break up the attacks. Hojjerg can press like crazy - has legs and engine. At same time, can be rooted to a area and protect. If he cant do slick passing thats ok. There are many CM who dont do that and still excel in their role.

If you think we need better to achieve top 4, then I would argue Sissoko is just as valuable a holding midfielder as Wijnaldum, Kovacic, McTominay. That is not to say I'm against bringing in quality like PEH to compete for a starting position.
Wait... what?!

I'd really like to see him in a Cm3 with Winks and Gio. If he can help free up winks to be more progressive as in his early days in the team, then I'm all for it.

Isn't that basically what we've been doing in the last few games?

Yeah I just think Hojbjerg will be better at it than Sissoko. Seems to work just as hard as Sissoko, has a tackle in him, but also doesnt have the touch of a kiddy fiddler.

Good solid player, young, premiership experience, was club captain, has played for Bayern, good price given his contract, whats not to like, if we can get him and jose wants a DM as a priority then lets do it, no brainer.

We’re buying a player to come in sit in front of the back 4 and give us a 6-7/10 every week. Doesn’t have to special, literally come in and protect the back 4. Him being there will hopefully give Ndombele and Lo Celso bit more freedom in the side.. we don’t have the money to go drop 50m on a CDM. To get him we can hopefully use a bit part squad player to front most the fee. He’s PL proven, solid and still young enough to improve. Yes there’s better but financially it’s literally a no brainier

And besides, the last player we signed based on his appearances for Southampton who many on here described as limited and not good enough turned out pretty well.

I just want to temper expeditions. If he comes in he won’t be the answer to all our problems.

My apologies - my mind was thinking about Sissoko so for some reason I thought you were talking about him!

I think a lot of our fans are just distracted when they watch us play tbh. Like they don't actually watch how we build up from the midfield and only pay attention to when something happens in the game.

If you actually watch us, you can't have that opinion about Sissoko, you just can't. There is no point to having Sissoko here for the money we could still get for him. If Hojbjerg comes in, that'll be at least 6 midfielders who are miles better than him in the squad.

Agreed. If we want to seriously challenge then you can't have a player in the team who is terrible on the ball.

Not advocating for Sissoko being a regular starter for us but I don't think Wanyama for example was substantial better on the ball than Sissoko is, I wouldn't trust either of them to play passes over 25+ yards but Wanyama was still a great player for us. France went to the final of Euro 2016 with Sissoko as a starting midfielder and he was one of their best players over the course of the tournament, that's pretty strong evidence that you can challenge for major honours while starting Sissoko regularly.
