Can't really judge his performances with Ireland, awful Irish team. We're dreadful haha.

He played a great ball in for Robinson. Stepped in to intercept the pass, drove forward and put Robinson in with the outside of his right book. But...Robinson was Robinson and didn't finish (or square to Connolly).

Hope we see a lot more of that with Spurs - we have players that can actually finish!

I've done a little research. Here's what I found out. Do take all this with a pinch of salt as I'm not a language expert - it's just what I've managed to glean from a quick bit of digging.

Anyway, in the original Gaelic, the origin of the name is 'dochartach' which means 'hurtful'. Doherty, Docherty, Dougharty and all other variations all stem from this original name.

From what I understand, the 'ch' in the second syllable of the word is pronounced the way that 'ch' is pronounced in a word like 'loch'.

The reason for the different spellings and pronunciations is due to the influence of English on the Irish people and language. As Gaelic became secondary to English over time, when speaking, people replaced the fricative 'ch' (which doesn't exist in English) with something else. This was exacerbated by the fact that it happened at times of low literacy rates, so most people only had oral language and so there would have been few examples of the name written down to help define its pronunciation.

This all leads to the name either being pronounced with a hard 'c' (so Dock-erty), a hard 'h' (DoHH-erty) or a removal of the consonant altogether (Dow-erty). The original name being pronounced differently in turn led to variations after literacy rates went up and people began spelling the name the way they had heard it.

So technically speaking, pronouncing it Dock-erty, DoHH-erty Dough-erty or Dow-erty are all correct. The 'more' correct way (if such a thing can even be said to exist) would be to pronounce it Docherty with a 'ch' like loch.

Of course, the 'most' correct way is to pronounce it the way the person whose name it is pronounces it. :)

I think how we looked today, although the result was the usual shite, the change in how we are playing has me optimistic, pressing from the front playing some nice passes trying to keep possession and stay comfortable with the ball rather than lashing it forward from the back looking for a knock on or running mindlessly down the wings over and over again. Lots to be optimistic about now we just need to get some results.

I went out with a girl with the surname Journet once. She pronounced it Sher-nay. I got pissed up one night and had a big row with her insisting "it's fucking jer-net". We didn't last long.
Don't feel bad it's just another part of the Jer-net......

I’m not expecting much from them right now to be honest. Another couple of years down the line with a few more players blooded and a few more games under their belts and Kenny will have his team. Right now it’s impossible to change years of dross overnight.

We’ll never get another Robbie but surely there’s better out there? Parrott and Idah hopefully long term but Shane Long gets about 1 a season for club and country. Not totally convinced by Connolly yet either. Take away his performance against a poor Spurs team and there’s not a lot else to be excited about. Probably more before that game happened.
