Think the Pickford one is difficult, he’s gone for a spread - standard goalkeeper technique with an attacker coming in towards him, just both attacker and keeper missed the ball.

had vdv connected with it, we’d be saying it was an unreal and brave save.

but then, take it as a tackle rather than a save technique it’s a red card anywhere else on the pitch.

aside from the rules taking it back to the phase of play that was offside

I think Lewis Dunk got a straight red for exactly the same challenge at the weekend. Goalkeepers get cut a lot of slack IMO.

I just can't imagine the Standard doing something so cringeworthy when our players get injured long term. And Liverpool fans wonder why people take the piss out of them.

Hope their petitions are going well...

Jordan Pickford challenge on Virgil Van Dijk will not bring retrospective punishment

So what next? Virgil t shirts? Virgil badges on their shirts and boots?

I love the fact they’re doing this - I’m laughing my arse off!

I don’t think any of the London papers would do this. I don’t think the Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds or Manchester papers would do this either. No other paper would lol

Bang on. TS wanna change the rules now. Why is it everytime something happens to Liverpool the laws of the game need to be looked at when everyone else just accepts it and gets on with it?

There’s a big difference in going by the shape of a save (standard one too), than studs up tackle.

Mira the spread technique, loads of top keepers are trained to attack the ball like that.
It’s rash, and cos both missed the ball, a proper bad ending, buts it’s not a tackle, it’s a save technique

If there is then there shouldn't be.

The 'studs up tackle' is dangerous because it can cause another player serious injury, either because of potential laceration or, more regularly, because if the weight of the tackler is behind it then the opponent's leg could be broken. If a goalkeeper launches himself at an opponent, the resulting contact can do as much or more damage than going in 'studs up'. Somebody's whole body weight impacting (for example) your standing leg you can easily do as much or even far more damage than a 'studs' up' tackle can.

I've no problem with the 'spread' saving technique (even though it has always seemed to me to be a desperate attempt by a desperate 'keeper) as long as the 'keeper doesn't do it into another player. That is both reckless and potentially dangerous.

You're right about one thing though: it isn't a tackle. It's an assault.
