Quite. Think Aurier is getting undue stick and Royal probably too much hype. Very similar in lots of ways, just the latter is taller and younger. Concedes more fouls than Aurier, altho is an all round better defender tho for that he tempers his attacking

When we were top last year Aurier was one of our best players, easy to forget amidst his inconsistency that’s he occasionally brilliant
When we were top we played with 2 defensive midfielders. Sissoko did a lot of covering for Aurier when he was out of position. Also the right sided player whether it was Moura or Bergwijn did their fair share of covering back. Its why Jose didn't play Bale because he felt Aurier needed extra help on that side.

I can't speak for Emerson though. He may be similar but I really hope he doesn't need the amount of help from midfield that Aurier needed.

Personally think age/experience is a massive factor when comparing Aurier/Emerson. If you had a player of Auriers level, at 22, you’d be delighted at what could develop. In fact, Aurier himself was ‘that player’ when we signed him. If they’re then the same player, years later, that’s when a problem develops.

Also, Aurier didn’t want to be here.

One thing that Emerson will give you in abundance is energy. Aurier was great at getting forward but not so keen in getting back, which is why Sissoko became a right back/midfielder hybrid.

Emerson will bomb up and down the right flank all day long and although he isn't the most technical he does like to attack and will give the opposing full back plenty to think about.

The problem is that was all Sissoko could do - play as an extra RB. We are just as defensive in CM now - with Skipp, Højbjerg and Dele - and Hojbjerg has been helping the RB out, and Dele the LB, with Skipp covering any gaps. The difference is Højbjerg does not hide when we have the ball and can pass.

Can't remember such a mixed response to a player and contrasting descriptions of their strengths and weaknesses. Apparently:

- He's a predominantly attacking full back, but is also Tanganga-lite.
- He's fast but not especially quick.
- He runs non stop but isn't a great athlete.
- He's good on the ball but has the technique of Sissoko.
- He's outstanding but barely an upgrade on Aurier.

I've got no fucking idea what to think anymore. All I can say is that in the compilations where you can see his every touch in a given match, he looks like a really decent, well rounded full-back and personally I'm feeling quite optimistic. Also loved his little intro video - looks like he has a good character.

Early signs are that the 3 attackers stay forward more though. Under Jose it was often them dropping back and having a midfield 5. It looks like Nuno is going to have 2 box to box midfielder either side of a holder and a narrow front 3. I don't mind Hojbjerg covering over to the right and Alli covering to the left. It's when the wide players dropped deep too that really frustrated me last season.

Gotta say the first 30 seconds of this didn't exactly fill me with confidence ?

The rest of it doesn't get much better either - it's only one game in pre season, but...?

Exactly, it's only one game in pre-season with new team mates. Here's a better showcase of his skillset when playing a competitive game for Betis

I get peoples skepticism with him, but this is maybe more based on Spurs than it is the actual player. We've had some false dawns in this position, in both Doc and to a lessor extent Aurier.

Equally a lot of people weren't totally convinced on their predecessors of Walker and Trippier. Their success at City and Atletico seems to have (possibly rightly) made people re-assess how good they were, albeit by no means the perfect players.

If you add in the continued progress of Tanganga, who IMO had looked good but not great (injuries permitting), people may be a little suspicious of any additions.

Emerson looks the stronger/stockier of the two, the new shiny thing arriving from Barcelona full of confidence.

Tanganga is well grounded modest local lad, someone who seems to get the privileged position he finds himself in.

We don't need to pick a favourite, let the two of them battle it out, hopefully the net result is a bloody good performance from RB for Spurs.

The full/wingback position is one that has developed the most in recent years, a lot of Liverpool's success has been down to the shape and overloads their two wing backs provide.

I really hope we (with Reggie on the left) now have our own 'lite' version of this.

Trippier’s final season with us was poor but he was definitely a ‘decent’ RB for us.
The biggest issue with Trippier was being expected to cover the ground Walker did on a big Wembley pitch. He was often caught trying to press forward but that was more to do with the loss of control in midfield. We couldn't hold it long enough to allow him time to overlap. The loss of Dembele had a major impact on our lack of control. Trippier was a quality defender , decent crosser but not the athlete Walker was.

Trippier got an obscene number of assists with his sweet crossing.

His last season he was carrying a groin injury and tbh that’s on Poch, as we had KWP available but he kept stifling him and sending Trippier out carrying an injury.

seems a strange signing to me when have 2 other right back!
could go either way. i think we could have spent the money on Ings and been stronger for it!

but you never know he could be a great player

I think he is very quick and can run all day plus looks technically good so fingers crossed.

Trippier was a solid if unspectacular RB for us who did fairly well at times to step up when Walker left, but his final season was terrible. He made so many mistakes.

It shouldn't be difficult for Emerson to be an improvement on him.

Trippier played most of that season through injury if I'm not mistaken
