I wonder if we'd signed Moriba we would've signed Emerson?

Having done some reading up, sounds like a younger, bubblier, more committed Aurier. Not as attacking but fast and more solid at the back due to his size although has similar issues around lack of concentration and had a torrid time in Barca’s last game vs Getafe.

Hasn’t been picked for Brazil WC qualifiers which is good for integration but he’s not some ready made world beater. Has the tools but needs to kick on and is actually more a Betis player than a Barca one, who until this season he hasn’t played for - they’ve permanently loaned him out and brought him back to sell him

Seems a nice and diligent guy, hope he can make the position his own although expectation seems unrealistically high already. Words like “outstanding” are well over the top. A lot to prove

We need good full backs and and a solid midfield and we've got that now, we have been going downhill since walker left and rose had his dip.

A three at the back with Romero/tanganga giving reguillon and Emerson license to attack could be very interesting.

We finally have two athletic attacking full backs to replace peak Rose/Walker - this is something to rejoice!

He’s not that attacking. Much less attacking than Aurier, for one, and more defensive than Doherty, altho obviously more attacking than Tanganga. He’s just quite fast, and tall so wins duels. Actually ranks quite low on attacking intent - The Athletic have done a good explainer

A quick stats comparison from last season per 90

Quite. Think Aurier is getting undue stick and Royal probably too much hype. Very similar in lots of ways, just the latter is taller and younger. Concedes more fouls than Aurier, altho is an all round better defender tho for that he tempers his attacking

When we were top last year Aurier was one of our best players, easy to forget amidst his inconsistency that’s he occasionally brilliant

Yeah I can't say I'm super thrilled. Hopefully his attitude / personal issues are better, otherwise there isn't much difference from Aurier.

Sounds like he’s a very committed pro, the antithesis of the Brazil party boy stereotype, so I think we defo get that

I just remember many people saying Aurier was better than Walker when we signed him, so people need to chill their boots and see him play

here’s that Athletic piece. The main difference seems to be he’s much better in possession:

You cannot overestimate the importance of the FB/WB in modern football. This could go down as our best signing this transfer window.

You can’t just rely on stats to get excited or not. You need to watch the player. What those stats don’t include are the brain farts Aurier has, like stupidly fouling the Leicester player in the box last season which threw the game away for us. There were many mistakes like that.

Aurier was a solid player when “on it and focussed” but he was hugely erratic. If Royal is just a more stable consistent presence he will be a big upgrade.

From what I read he has attacking qualities but these were muted at Betis as they primarily played him as a ‘tucked in’ full back.

Agree, people are saying he concedes more fouls according to stats. If he fouls someone in their 3rd or on the half way line then even if he concedes more, its better than the Aurier fouls on the edge of the box leading to dangerous free kicks. Stats need to have context

I've seen highlights of him and they are supposed to be showing the best, it's not that special.

Same. We have a poster on here who watched a lot of Betis last season due to spending a lot of time there, who said that he's basically a luxury Tanganga. When I watch highlights, I do get that feeling as well and I don't see much that supports any statement that he would offer a much bigger attacking onus than our current options.
