The squad is now smaller, but not weaker.

If anything we've brought in 2 players, replacing 4 that weren't going to play a lot/if at all.

Thing is you have to remember how long it takes sometimes to get players out. If you don't want them and there's a solid offer that the player is willing to accept sometimes it's for the best. If he'd stayed it might have been for another full year of paying his wages.

Think of it this way come the Summer the excuse has now gone that we need to clear squad space before we can buy.
I accept it might be for the best. But even a loan would make sense. Like we are now very few injuries away from essentially no CM option. With COVID around it really isn't inconceivable to be missing 2-3 midfields. Obviously when you are down to 5th choice it's usually going to be a makeshift option. But who exactly is that makeshift option? Dier? Alfie Devine? Possibly Kulu? Like it seems like potentially a massive weakness to me. Particularly as Dier post-injury is absolutely incapable of playing that role, while at CB he is actually our most reliable defender.

Similarly, CB and RB haven't been sorted. Okay, we can wait till the summer that's fine. But in all honesty while we have Bentancur who is dependable and offers something a bit different and a Conte player though far from elite, and Kulu who I actually think will be a big success here. We also have opened up new holes and new problems. Neither, btw, are actually guaranteed starters and frankly they have both been bought to strengthen the team as a whole rather than necessary be main men.

Long term it makes sense, short term I'm not sure. One signing, a player who can at least cover CM at a pinch, and I would be relaxed but right now it's hard to not see this, as well, a gamble for the rest of the season.

I personally don't think the squad is that thin but also... this second half of the season is just us in the Prem and the FA Cup?
I'd be a lot more worried if we still had Europe to contend with too, but generally speaking we'll be playing one match a week and still have basically got two players for each positon (Even up top as Son/Stevie can do the job up there).

I think this is a smart and effective January window that, hopefully, sets us up for a progressive summer.

We had a squad that was formulated towards 4-3-3, with 2 for each position (22 players)

2 GK: Hugo, Gollini
2 RB: Emerson, Doherty
4 CB: Rodon, Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga
2 LB: Reg, Davies
6 CM: Winks, Skipp, Hoj, Dele, Gio, Ndombele
6 FW: Son, Kane, Bergwijn, Gil, Moura, Sess

Now we have a team set up for 3-4-3, with 2 for each position (20 players)

2 GK: Hugo, Gollini
2 RWB: Emerson, Doherty
5 CB: Rodon, Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga, Davies
2 LWB: Reg, Sess
4 CM: Winks, Skipp, Hoj, Bentacur
5 FW: Son, Kane, Bergwijn, Kulu, Moura

So when you look at it, we have reduced the squad massively while maintaining 2 players for each position and pivoting towards Conte’s formation. The gaps we have are in the FW and CB position which I’m sure we’ll look to resolve in the summer.

You’re missing Romero from your squads :) ?

I totally understand the need to take the opportunities when they arise to move on players not in Conte’s plans, but with so many out we really should have done more to bring at least one more in.

To those saying “we’ll they didn’t feature anyway”. That is true, but you can be assured they would have featured if we had injuries. Apart from the odd game, our midfield has been injury free as well as Kane being injury free.

We’ve left ourselves at the mercy of luck and where Spurs are concerned we know that is in very short supply.

Has Romero left?

Even better, we actually have 6 CBs, as you forgot about Romero

If a VDV-esque opportunity does arise this evening we’ll be first in line given squad space won’t be an issue.

Hoping an opportunity arises, preferably at RWB or CM

4 players leaving, 3 of which were offering us nothing and were showing barely any sign of doing so and 1 who isn’t ready, and two arriving with elite level experience doesn’t make us weaker. Less is more in terms of the squad in this case. 1 more would’ve been great but overall I’d rank this window as a good one. Especially for January.

And we have a 6th CB in Romero? So to for each of the two CB positions?

Bit tragic if that's it. No RWB, no CB.

Don't really get how this sets up for the summer either as Ndombele and Lo Celso will probably just come back like a boomerang.
