Would rather see him compete here with Doherty and Spence than go on loan. He already looks like he'd offer more going forward than Emerson.

But maybe that's just the terms on which they'd sell him.

Edit: I'm an idiot. Got confused. But I'll leave this here so people can have a laugh!

Tottenham closing in on £21m Udinese left-back Destiny Udogie

The 19-year-old could be loaned back to Italy but would be Spurs' seventh signing of the summer

Tottenham Hotspur are close to agreeing a deal to sign Udinese left-back Destiny Udogie.

The highly-rated 19-year-old is expected to cost around £21 million with the Serie A club requesting to take him back on loan for the season.

Udogie has been tipped for a call-up to the senior Italy squad next month, having already played for the Under-21s, and would be Tottenham’s seventh signing this summer.

Sources in Italy have suggested that an agreement has been reached and that the transfer is close to being completed.

If he arrives he will follow Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster as Spurs back manager Antonio Conte.

Although Spurs have told Sergio Reguilon he can leave this summer, and hope to move the Spaniard on, the arrival of Perisic means the 33-year-old Croatian will be first-choice at left wing-back. The club also have Ryan Sessegnon which means they may be prepared to allow Udogie to return to Udinese where he made his breakthrough season in the last campaign having joined from Hellas Verona.

In 35 league appearances last season Udogie scored five goals and provided three assists and is regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in Italian football. Spurs reason that signing him now, even if it means loaning him back, will secure a star of the future for a reasonable fee.

Spurs kick off their season on Saturday at home to Southampton – when they will be without the suspended Richarlison and with Bissouma a doubt having suffered a hamstring problem - with a growing sense of excitement that they might contest for silverware this season and could challenge Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance at the top of the Premier League.

Signing Udogie might not be the end of Spurs’ spending with links to Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo. Conte dropped Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks from his squad at the start of season.

Udogie vs Chelsea last week

Matches quite well against Reece James. 1 more year of senior league season, he should be ready next season (if we buy & loan back)

I get the feeling we decided to pull the trigger after this game.

This *may* be my favorite signing of the summer. He just looks like a really special talent. I've watched one (1) 10 minute highlight reel to get to this point.

I just WIKI'd him and he was at Udinese on loan last year with an obligation to but so it seems Udinese have only bought him this summer which may explain their requirement for a loan back.
Sorry if this has been mentioned brfore but if so I missed it.

Don't think it's a requirement for a loan back. You can't play for three different clubs a season but two different ones is no problem. He hasn't played for Verona this season.

What exactly is the special talent you see here? I've also watched a a ten minuteb highlights package and this clip v Chelsea and while I can see his physical qualities, i didn't see anything extraordinary.

Looks like he does most things well, but does he have explosive place? Can he beat his man with trickery and skill? Can he deliver delicious crosses right into the mix? He looks tidy no doubt but is he exceptional?

This is more detailed stat comparison of Udogie vs Sessegnon vs Perisic from last league seasons
Its so blatantly obvious, how lacking is Sessegnon. Udogie fairs much better in ball retention, progression etc Crossing accuracy is also better than Perisic

Italians expect him to be their starting lb for the next 10 years, everything I’ve read suggests he’s highly rated not just as a prospect but as a quality player right now.

0.7 crosses attempted seems pretty weak tbh ?
