Raya must be fuming at Brentford right now.
He'll get his move, Brentford will eventually lower his price to something reasonable toward the end of the window and he'll end up moving to United or Chelsea, albeit not as guaranteed first choice initially. We've obviously decided we just weren't prepared to wait for that to happen.

Maybe he'll get lucky and United come in late in the window,
but to be honest it wouldn't surprise me if he's a 5m January signing for Palace or a Spanish club neither. I'd be furious if I was Raya.

Brentford don't have to sell him so I don't see the issue. They want too much so we found someone else. Raya could leave for free next year. I don't see how anyone can complain about it when we have Kane in the same situation. He has 1 year left but we don't need to sell and Utd pulled out interest due to cost. Maybe they will lower the price later in the window but we can't wait that long. We need the keeper sorted.

Brentford do have to sell, it's their model and they've signed a new No.1

It's more like us being stubborn over Kane's price if we'd already bought in an obvious replacement, though. Having bought a replacement for 11m they've made a rod for their own back as everyone knows they need to sell Raya whereas we genuinely seem happy to let Kane run his contract down.

Brentford are entitled to do whatever they want but from a strategic POV, when you only have 1 or 2 clubs that are interested, it's quite a dangerous game they're playing if they're not willing to bend on the fee.

Raya simply isn't worth 40m and the alleged 33m fee we were offering is likely as good as they were ever going to get offered this summer. As things stand they're basically gambling on United (or maybe Chelsea) coming in and overpaying or else they're pissing a lot of money down the toilet or selling him for a severely reduced fee at the end of the window.

40mil for Raya would make him the third most expensive GK ever I believe… how on earth is that reasonable?

Sounds like we're going for a cheap option though. When Liverpool needed a keeper they didn't buy a 20m one did they. That is more my point than not spending 40m on him.

40m for a goalkeeper with 1 year left is ridiculous money. Even more so when he's not a top GK.

What is he 3rd choice for the Spanish Gk position, if that?

I imagine we were prepared to offer half that.
Come January we can agree a contract with him for next year, or offer 10million once he agrees to do it then. Would be a take it or leave it like we did with Holtby

No, they spent £6m on Karius.

Then when some of their cheaper signings worked out, they could spend bigger on a couple of main targets.

We need at least 4-5 first team squad players this summer. We can't overpay on all of them.

I thought you could only do that with players in different leagues? Besides, we are unlikely to be interested in him in Jan as we should hopefully have that position sorted.

I think it's a bit different when you have 1 clearly outstanding option available though.

IMO Alisson is world class and someone you break the bank for to bring in. Raya's good but he's just not on that level so if Brentford are being stubborn and asking for well over his market value and you can get a similar level keeper for less than half the price then it's a pretty sensible decision.

This is especially true given we have a limited budget and need to also bring in 2-3 more key players. Liverpool at the time were adding the final touches to an already very strong first 11 so it made sense to spend big in the very best.

Liverpool knew Karius was a liability and they had to go out and strengthen the GK situation. They spent big and won the damn CL.

Yeah but I still think everything in my post holds up regardless of that. They got to the CL final the season prior and had a very very strong team.

We just finished 8th and need to buy a bunch of other key players to even be competitive again.

If Raya was world class then sure, overpay, do what it takes to get him....but he's really not world class and worth overpaying for IMO.

EDIT: the one caveat being if Vicario turns out to be rubbish, in which case we could well be fucking ourselves - hopefully the scouting team are on the money

It’ll be a January £20m move if nobody wants to pay more now. Raya might even do well to drag it out and leave for free.
