He could go for a lower price towards the end of the window, as there don't seem to be many suitors for him. 🤷‍♂️
United seem like the obvious ones if De Gea ends up leaving and they don't want to pay silly money for Onana (who, tbf, looks excellent).

Beyond that the only club that would pay anything like what they're asking is Chelsea but they'd presumably have been all over him ages ago if they wanted him?

If those 2 don't go for him I think Brentford probably lose him on a free?

IIRC someone (in this thread) said almost the exact opposite. So he's very good with his feet, but he's poor with his feet. No wonder SC is always in a state of flux :D
For ‘state of flux’ read: “Accutely bi-polar, and presenting symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder while demonstrating traits commonly associated with toxic narcissism.”

Sky Sports News' transfer expert Lyall Thomas:

“There haven’t been any real advancements on the future of David Raya recently.

"Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario instead after balking at the £40m asking price from Brentford on Raya.

"Manchester United, who have a lot of uncertainty over the future of David de Gea at the moment, are also interested but also don’t want to pay £40m for him either.

"The price is putting clubs off and Brentford are quite prepared to have three goalkeepers going into the start of the season.”

So we are being total cheapskates again. Nothing changes with Spurs.
There's a difference between cheap and prudent.
If we as a club don't think he is worth 40mil, but Brentford insist on 40mil, should we just pay it, because that's what they want??
Do that on all deals and then hello administration.

Brentford may well feel he is a 40million pound player, or they may have overstretched in their expectation we would pay it and are now left with the prospect of losing him for nothing next season.
He clearly isn't worth 40 million to us and any player when sold, is sold for the price the buying club is willing to pay

i agree we've had many instances of this in the past but don't think that's the story here. for once we seem to be targeting value as opposed to just cheaper. he certainly doesn't look to be just some n'schmo picked from obscurity. if the 20m saved goes into getting much better options elsewhere than first thought, all for it e.g as someone already said, we can put it towards scott with a minimal top up.

GK and CB are absolutely critical positions, and with GK you get the right one in and you're sorted for years.

You've only got to look at Liverpool and the recruitment of Allison and Van Dijk (both world record prices for their respective positions at the time) which transformed them from contenders to PL and CL champions a couple of seasons later.
I honestly believe it's this sort of prudence that is holding us back.

I agree, however, I wouldn't say Liverpool used prudence in making two positional, world record bids...

40m for a goalkeeper with 1 year left is ridiculous money. Even more so when he's not a top GK.

What is he 3rd choice for the Spanish Gk position, if that?

I imagine we were prepared to offer half that.

Whilst that bit of Liverpool recruitment is a good example, that was pretty much all they needed.

Our delayed painful rebuild isn't necessarily analogous.

25m would have been a more than fair offer. Fully agree with the club not bending over when Brentford are taking the piss

We were prepared to pay £33m then we're not sure what happened.

That's my point mate, it wasn't prudent. They went out and spent what was needed to get their no1 choices in both positions.
They were the last 2 pieces of the Klopp puzzle, we need an awful lot more. Allison and VVD were also exceptional talents that had no peers
