Was he good? Or were his compatriots elite? Not sure you can be good one season and then be pretty average/rubbish for the next 3/4 seasons.

Yeah, he was good. He was good at Ajax and he was good in his first season here. As with anyone, it helps with good players around him but he was genuinely good.

Next few seasons when the whole team dipped he wasn't able to regain his form again. Dele was good for a few seasons then lost it (as we now know for a variety of reasons). Point is, though, good players can struggle and finding your form and confidence can be difficult (especially when a team is changing managers and styles so quickly and there's a whole pandemic and a mid season world cup that throws out any sense of regularity).

As for VDV, he seems good and I'd love to have him. He's promising though. Sanchez was promising when we got him too. If/when we get VDV I think we need to as fans (and as a club) remember that we need to continually help nurture that promise.

He’s very quick, and seems good in his recovery due to that. I think he suits Ange’s style perfectly, and yes he does remind me of Super Jan. I wouldn’t give him the number 5 shirt tho, I’m still hoping we sign Redondo (Federico). If Reggy goes, give him the number 3 shirt.

He was good when he played with Toby or Jan but fell apart when paired with Eric Dier - needed experience alongside him to keep him focused.
Yes I know this isn’t the Sanchez thread.

That's a lot of money for the supposed cheaper option! As much as all of us would have wanted Tapsoba and VDV, considering Leverkusen don't want to sell Tapsoba I think we would have been looking at well north of 100M to get both of them, which is a bit rich unless you're a state owned club.

50m may be excessive, but if he transforms our Defense in the way Virgil did for scouse, it’s pennies!

hopefully we’re not done after this and veliz. Deffo need another cb!

hoping and praying with all my fibre we’ve just finally decided to pay, but I think we all know what I means in our heart of hearts.

This does kind of show why we didn't pull the trigger a while ago. We have probably been negotiating to try and get the fee down and also shows that "We should be able to afford both him and Tapsoba without selling Kane" is not actually true once we know the actual figures. Press guesses at figures are often wrong.

If he ends up being a quality CB who stays with us for years it will still be very good business.

Why do people obsess over the fee so much?
