As others have said, the game changed when Lo Celso came on. He promptly took up a position in the pocket (as @littlemandefoe mentioned, a similar position to Van der Vaart) and, within two minutes, had completed 3 creative passes. He's also a bit like a less experienced Eriksen, but one who's willing to go in for combative tackles.

As someone predicted, Winks has come in for a great deal of criticism for factors that were largely beyond his control. His passing wasn't precise, but that was largely because he was marked by 2 or even 3 opponents as soon as he got the ball in transition, because Sissoko was either dropped back to cover the defence or on the right to cover Aurier's position. Winks was otherwise on his own until GLC came on.

The issue today was bad passing. Brighton play a pretty decent pressing game, but we didn't just give the ball away when under pressure, we did it through sheer inattention and carelessness. A few times, it invited pressure from Brighton, but mainly what it did was to cause well-worked moves to break down. We mounted numerous patient attacks that ended up with no shot, because some twat or other passed the ball to an opponent. Sissoko and Winks frequently won the ball in midfield, but then someone would give it straight back.

Both teams defended pretty well and we needed a stroke of luck and a stroke of genius to score two goals. We then could have added 3 more in the last 8-10 minutes, once we had the pitch properly populated with creative players, but Brighton blocked everything.

He’s a funny one winksy, clearly loves the club but he’s quite a niche player. Today he got overrun by the Brighton players, I’ve seen him play enough games that I think he’s a good squad player but shouldn’t be starting CM for us.

Said it for a couple of years, Winks is overhyped and is not at the level we need (nor will he ever be). He’s the kind of player who would look good at Bournemouth or Crystal Palace but shouldn’t be anywhere near a team looking to compete for a top four finish.

And other results in and around us so far, went our way. The Chelsea game on Sun is even more annoying, seeing how things shaped up today

We play a day before Chelsea next and a win would put us into fourth before they go to the Emirates. Would be nice to put some pressure on them and their over-hyped manager.

That loss is still annoying, but would be nice bit of soccer karma if we entered the new year in the top four.

Yep, just the sort of situation our lot normally fail to capitalise on.

If we play as we did today I can see Pukki having a field day!

Three-and-a-half-starts-out-of-five type rated computer game players. They have 3 or 4 good games a season, then for the rest they are meh or a bit pants. It's those 3 or 4 that people rate them on and say "we should get him in!" whilst ignoring the others.

We've put out a lot of those in the past - Townsend being one good example, Bentaleb is another. Their very best is very good, but it's quite a bit above their regular level. Townsend, for example, will score one worldie per season and then you wouldn't know he played for palace for the rest.

Cant complain with a win. But we cant keep setting up like that.

Get a quality DM in asap, the likes of Ndom and Lo Celso can fit in around that.

Undoubtedly GLC changed the game and showed what can happen when you put pace on a pass and spread the ball - not just simple lay off here and there. In fact he did exactly what this team has been missing and hopefully Jose has seen it.

On game itself.
Brighton did not press high particularly at start, they were happy for ball to go back and forth across defence whilst they held shape in front of them. Problem then comes in fact that so little movement up front that we tend to play long ball. This is made worse by Winks and Sissoko never showing for a ball. When they were on the ball their distribution was poor, and there was never any drive from Winks. Four yard passes misplaced time and again, first touch poor. Sissoko forgetting to take ball with him when going forward.
Believe most said should never play together again after Man U and today offered no reason to change that thinking.

Then have the Dele enigma. Hate to think how many times lost possesion from one flick here or there - and then he produces sublime skill to score winner.

Moura though is main issue. He battles away gamely but very little link up play, doesnt hold position and again constantly loses ball.

Chelsea and first half today was dire football - worst seen for years GLC changed that dynamic lets hope we sign him this window

I think Rice would be an upgrade but for the money they'd want I think we could get better value elsewhere.

I'm not a huge fan, but trying to think who is available and can come in and be an upgrade and really screen our back four.

I know there are a few Portuguese players we have been linked with, so a lot will come down the manager's thinking.

Something very wrong with the mentality in the group who only start playing when a goal down. Really frustrating as we have the quality

Been like this for ages, lost count the amount of times we'd concede then start to play in the final year of Poch.

Strange how people can view things. You view the Chelsea game as more annoying because they lost today. I now view it as a let off now they've already given us those points back and that dreadful performance can almost be forgotten about. Almost.

Declan Rice is essentially where Dier was in 2015-17.

Dier's injury problems have clearly hampered his mobility tremendously as he used to be a quite tenacious player for us during those two years justifying his selection.
