I've not really watched a lot of tactical analysis of Anges set-up and only caught highlights of pre-season but it what seemed pretty obvious and in stark contrast with JM and AC is the lack of focus on transitioning the ball quickly. It seems like we try and play our way through trouble and it's more about playing triangles to escape the press opposed to stretching the pitch and playing long. Is this a preference of his? I'm certainly not opposed to it - my favourite side in terms of style was the Barca team in the 00's but it does require every player to have a level of technical ability, especially our back 4 and cm's.

If it's the way we're going to play then it'll take a while for the players to adapt, it'll also take patience from those in our fan base who repeat "just clear it" every 5 minutes. I've always preferred possession based football so I'm more than happy to let the occasional misplaced pass occur on our final third if it means we're prettier on the eye, just hope the majority of fans understand what we're trying to do.

I could also be spouting absolute rubbish and he's known for his fast transitions, just going off the small sample size of today.
Nope you are completely correct, he plays a high intensity, hound down the other team and dominate the ball setup, this though of course means some teams will on purposefully look to hit us on the break and defend deep which funny enough is what COnte played. It'll take time and i think some results will be bumpy but it will get there.

We need to stretch the play wider go a bit more direct and pop a few long shots.

The other option is to use an aerial threat, (Maybe Veliz) can come off the bench.

Why wasn't he or Scarlett on the bench?
Yeah, I don’t know if this is something that’s sometimes done with inverted fullbacks or something he did at Celtic, but I wondered about bringing Son in and Udogie overlapping more often - he looks like he has the strength and pace to go past a player. We got very few crosses in.

Thoughts on the game.
I thought we played a good game overall considering the opponent. Brentford are very good at home and it was definitely out of this weekend bar chelsea vs Liverpool probably the most difficult match up. We’ll have a lot more easier games. Still found we gave the ball away a few times I think the ref was very trigger happy with the yellows against us whereas Brentford got next to nothing.

Destiny at LB what a debut he really did well in that Berth and looks a danger if him and Sonny can get on the same wavelength that will be a killer side for us this year.

Emerson did well floating in to CM seems to be the new thing for the prem this year, arsenal played party at rb yesterday and well we all know how Trent AA plays.

bissouma is an absolute boss in CM can’t wait to see him and Bentancur in the centre together.

vicario unfortunately worries me a bit I hated Lloris coming out for the ball this guy on a completely different level. Jury well out on this guy atm.

sonny and Kulu - not sure what’s happened but many times Kulu had opp to have a crack and bottled it. Sonny just doesn’t want to take anyone on anymore. If these two can get back their confidence of 2 seasons ago we are on to a winner.

maddison good performance his yellow stopped him being more aggressive.

Richy - he just needs to be fed those balls and he’ll score bags he moved well was in the right places but never got anything brentford had moved to defence mode by HT.

overall not bad performance but at times we just held the ball but really did nothing with it I hope we get more creative as we learn Anges tactics and style of play

Agree with all of this but do think the chance richarlison had with his side footed shot that was blocked that kane would have scored by reversing the ball the other side low and hard

Then we win game 2-3

I'm presuming with our high-line this is something he's been asked to do to eat up the space and pressure the attackers. A clever CF/winger would have him on toast if he isn't careful.

Really don't see any point in starting with all the "Kane would've scored that" stuff.

He's gone. Move on.

I get that but I'm just responding to comments that richarlison didn't have the service/wasn't involved

He had a chance that the very elite strikers would have scored

Still a work in process. Our press is disjointed still and I’m not sure son has it in him to press effectively.
Numerous times players slowed the ball down did pass to open men and took too many touches we need to move the ball quickly.
That is all stuff that will improve as we get used to the system.
Skipp is pointless as an attacking 8, he just doesn’t offer anything and isn’t particularly mobile.
Subs left a lot to be desired imo, we were well on top bring on Gio for skipp and peri and Solomon on for the wingers and really go for the kill.
There is a big disconnect between our defence and midfield in defence, I’m not sure if it’s bissouma not tracking back effectively or what the plan is but it’s a big worry.
The second goal from Brentford they had a free man which was awful biss and skipp ambled back and destiny was slow to get across.
A lot to build on but we new it would be a transition.
Squad definitely isn’t there yet.
Positives are maddison was very good, bissouma going forward was an absolute beast and ran midfield with Maddison, Udogie is an absolute monster, he has the ability to be the best left back we’ve ever had, VDV a good start, his pace is exactly what we need, him and destiny saved us a few times.
CB, striker and Genuine pacey 1v1 winger are needed.

This was my biggest takeaway and frustration from today, compared to the preseason (i know) the ball was moving much slower and too much of the old check back and pass it safe. I get the added pressure of playing an actual game, I hope this is something we will see improve for the next game
What didn't help was there was no water in the stadium so the pitch was dry AF...

Performance was chalk and cheese from last season
Agreed. Scoreline the same but the feeling in the match as a whole was so different. Last time was our first match post World Cup, we were all hoping we had shed the "give teams a one or two goal head start" shit that we had adopted and what did we do? Gave Brentford a two goal head start, got totally outplayed and then scored a couple of goals after we were forced to have a go at them. I remember watching it on TV and basically giving up and getting on with other things because we looked incapable of stringing two passes together never mind scoring and then Kane's goal reeled me back in. Then Pierre scored and we nearly won it when Kane hit the bar. In all of that, Conte never seemed to clock that if we had played with that intent from the start we could have won not just that game but several others under his management. This is why Ange is so loved already, he is the antithesis of Conte.

It was nice to feel invested again, after not watching any game from about March/April on last season. Nice to feel excited about Spurs. Nice to watch a Spurs team dominate a good team away from home, work in progress but there's a lot to be positive about.

For the first time in about 10 months I feel some connection again. I never thought that would be the case 2 days after Kane left the club.

I said to my wife about 10 minutes before kick-off "it's a bit of a free hit, this game. I'm not expecting anything special." yet I was probably more emotionally invested than I had been for any Spurs game in the last 18 months. I was absolutely gripped from first minute to last, to the point where it was making me feel a bit sick. It felt like a cup game at times, real "on a knife edge" stuff, particularly towards the end of the first half.

That's what I want as a Spurs fan. I don't demand to win every game, but I do demand entertainment.

Absolutely. I wasn't looking forward to any games over the last year or so, but I'm already looking forward to next weekend with anticipation even when it's United. We got a result last season when we were in the absolute shit, no reason why we can't do the same again with more positivity around the team

Heartwarming video from Chris Cowlin. Ange making sure the players acknowledge the fans after the game and the fans showing him the love by singing his name.

It was a farce. Sonny was arguably tripped by Jensen. The ref was on the spot and didn't give it. Not a clear and obvious error so VAR should have butted out.
I'd love to see a referee having the guts to look at the monitor and then say, 'no, I still don't think that was a penalty'

These decisions Howard Webb said last season that it would be left to the on field referee to decide and VAR should not get involved. Let’s see what happens for the rest of the season. Really soft decision which should not have been a penalty in my opinion.
