I always get neg reps for saying this but i'm 100% sure Skipp would have broken into the side by now over Winks and Sissoko had he stayed. I know he needs to play but we dropped a bollock loaning him whilst we're playing EL footy. If PEH gets injured our best option is an Ndombele Lo Celso double pivot which would likely be too open and put our top 4 chances in serious doubt.

Yep we need another DM, we should’ve went for Sangare who went to PSV for only €9M or Florentino Luis who was available

It’s what he does off the ball that annoys me so much.

He’s so, so tactically indisciplined. He’s the holding midfielder and yet he’s chasing the ball into their corner flag. He left gaps all over the midfield and they exploited them countless times. As footballers go, he’s a fucking imbecile.

Weak mentality with itk rumours stating he was worried about holjbergs signing goes to show how he reacts to competition. Never will be a top player garbage and needs to be sold asap

Totally agree. They’re the antithesis of positive football. Winks collects the ball, does a few needless spins and completely ignores a forward pass in favour of going back to a defender or sideways to Hojbjerg. When Dele gets the ball in a counter he just stops and fucks about, allowing the opposition to get set defensively.

Both of them need to go. They’re killing us.
Winks is a player that does so much yet so little - if that makes sense.

At the moment he's neither a conduit in attack or ably screening the backline but merely only serving to slow the game down to a snails pace before playing the conservative pass.

Can anyone tell me what he is in this current guise?

We've clearly had plenty of issues over the past 2 years but I think him being a starter and full time player for us was the biggest. He kills us offensively and defensively.

I think this sums him up tbh. You compare him to Ndombele in an attacking sense and every time Ndombele is off the ball, he is proactively moving into attacking spaces to get the ball and make something happen. Compare that to Winks who is naturally negative and drops behind Hojbjerg in case he loses the ball. When he’s on the ball he just wastes time; you know he’s either going backwards or sideways to a fullback.

Crazy thinking back to the CL final he was one of our better players at the time...mind you we had nobody else in CM.

Extremely frustrating player to watch, needs to move on.

This is so so spot on.

Love Winks but he really doesn’t offer much, he tries hard and has average passing but overall he’s just too average all round but my god his shooting and attacking play is so poor and he doesn’t do enough defensively or from a passing perspective to make
Up for it

Nice to see some waking up on Winks but I’d like to see if the same opinions are held in a day or two’s time or if it goes back to any criticism of him getting neg reps lol

Capable of dribbling past players in a positive fashion (i.e. leading to a quick pass or heads up play) - No.
Good long passer? This is basically his only real quality right now.
Capable of long shots or goal threat in any way - not in a million years.
Strong enough physically or positionally to play DM similar to Hojbjerg or Wanyama - No.
Quick of mind? No. Quick of foot? No.
Hard working and passionate - this used to be the thing he hung his hat on, and even this has waned.
He doesn’t have the long pass in his game at all when do you ever see him hitting a switch of play never it’s all 5 yard passes

It’ll be the neg ratings I’ve been getting them for a good while ! It’s brilliant to see who can actually judge a player properly though it’s been clear as day for a good while winks is average and many due to his home grown status hate to admit it

I make a habit of not judging players too much. I really don't believe I'm qualified to do so. Not until they've hung up their boots, anyway.

There's a lot of negative views of Winksy and I can see the merit in those views. I've seen many of the things his detractors highlight happen.

I'd be interested to hear from those who do rate Winks what they feel he brings. That's not me saying he doesn't bring anything and that I'm trying to make that clear. I'm genuinely interested to know what qualities does he have? On what basis could one justify or explain having him in a starting XI, or squad?

Winks and Dele are homegrown players which is helpful with the current squad make up. It's not much but it is something.

If he wasn’t homegrown he’d be long gone. Has no strengths and many weaknesses. Can’t shoot, can’t tackle, can’t compete physically, isn’t smart tactically, isn’t skilful, can’t run beyond the striker, isn’t comfortable when forced wide, isn’t tall, isn’t particularly athletic, doesn’t have particularly good range with his passing, can’t play-make in between the lines, is weak mentality as evidenced by the ITK saying he was worried by Højbjerg’s arrival (who ironically has had to babysit him when they play together).

He can recycle the ball and buzz about a bit. Thats it. That’s all he brings to the table. Besides his aforementioned homegrown and club trained status. Would terminate his contract and recall Skipp tomorrow if we had the option.

Thanks for that, chaps.

Can anyone provide a counter-argument? Is any of that not correct? Again, with a genuine interest in knowing.
