The whole point of the pointless Saudi League is to fleece them for as much oily blood money as possible. You can forget £20m, start negotiating when they mention £50m. Emerson is a Swiss-army knife of a player and we need him with the way we pick up injuries and suspensions.
This. 💯 👆

I can't believe when I see people thinking we should take £25-30 from a Saudi team - in a January transfer window. It does not matter if you think we can upgrade Royal - the only value of the Saudi league is that they overpay for players.

And I would not even consider an over-priced bid - unless you had a LB AND a RB ready to come in and replace him. Minimum.

get the feeling this won't be popular but i think we might look to bring kwp back in the summer. he'll have a year left on his deal and he adds to the hg/cg quota. that plus the inverted full back role suits him perfectly and is equally adept at playing rb and lb. southampton fans absolutely love him and he's not the same weedy kid that came through all those years ago. he's not porro or udogie but he doesn't need to be, he just needs to be a fit in terms of the system.

i've warmed to emerson and he does have a top attitude and can cover multiple positions to some degree but he doesn't fit what ange wants from his full backs. if we can get good money then i'd take it, though would rather put it off until the summer.

I always find bids like this a bit random. I mean reports state he isnt really interested in going, we aren’t actively looking to sell him (plenty of others need to be shipped before he goes) then why would the saudi’s even bother bidding? Surely one of us or emerson has put the feelers out for a bid to be submitted?
I think at this stage the Saudi league are just trying to fill teams up with recognisable players. It's the equivalent of cold calling; just ring round as many teams and players as possible and hope a few of them bite. I doubt very much they've scouted Emerson and identified him as the player they need, they're just going through the phone book until someone shows some interest.

I think he is a great guy and a fantastic professional. Having said that, if they offer silly money for him (25-30 million plus) then I think we should seriously consider it.

You and I disagree what constitutes "Silly Money"

We paid £25m+ for him. Silly money needs to be double that...at least.

And, we can't even take silly money unless we have two players lined up to replace him in the back line. With Davies injured and old (for a footballer) - we don't have adequate cover at RB or LB if Royal leaves.

He's done amazing to overcome the abuse and really step up.

I'd still sell if the price were right as he's an easy upgrade. It's looking like this window is the one where some extra money would be put to good use while others strugglr with FFP.
Is he an ‘easy upgrade’? He’s good cover for 2 positions, never complains and will follow tactical instruction extremely well. I don’t think that’s easy to replace at all, without bringing in someone who wants to play every week

Agree with you except for the bit about Davies being old. He’s 30

I think the cat's out of the bag that it's a shit league, in a shit place with no crowds or atmosphere working for shit people who are sportswashing for all they're worth. Regardless of the ridiculous money on offer, a large number of those who grabbed the cash can't wait to get out. I'd be disappointed in Emerson if he even thought about it tbh. He's better than that.

In footballing years - that is old.

Add in he has already lost a step from his best years, and he is a player we won't want playing FB except in an emergency.

Great squad player, and I would keep him, even for next summer. But he would not be a reliable FB - even as an inverted FB, who still has to cover wingers.

He should be getting more game time when we need a better defender against certain oppo he should be starting
I don't think we should sell him this window but there is no world in which we should be starting Emerson over Porro. Yes Emerson is better defensively but he absolutely cannot play the role Porro does and the trade-off is too big.

I say 25-30 million + as silly money because European teams are broke so we could never receive a similar amount for him that we paid for him if we sold him anywhere in Europe so under the current circumstances a figure of say £30 million is extremely good for us and would enable us to buy a better player elsewhere. I say this as an Emerson fan but if we are offered over £30 million we would be crazy not to at least consider it.

No chance we could replace what Royal gives us for £30M.

An ‘easy’ upgrade to which nobody has yet put forward a viable candidate who can either fulfil the same utilitarian remit as Royal and at a reasonable price point plus of course the more intangible measurements in how he’s perceived by team mates.

Let’s not create problems for ourselves here.

Of course we could. That's madness to suggest otherwise.
Who are you going to get in the next 10 days, for £30M that can immediately cover RB, LB and CB in the PL? And is a good fit, with the right attitude, in the squad?

Its madness to think you can find that player in today's market.

Not in Jan though, surely?

He is currently our back up right and left back. Does a decent job across all the defensive positions.

Probably worth moving on in the long run as he does have technical deficiencies, but no point leaving ourselves short now when there is still plenty for us to play for this season.
