It’s handball and a pen.

no spirit of the game bullshit, the player fucked up, the end, but was very, very lucky.

never a pen on saka as well, he should have stayed up and scored, bottled it big time.
Neither were pens, the ref got both right. One because of the spirit of the game and the second because of cheating.

So should all penalties from low xG positions be disallowed because it ruins the 'spirit of the game' and potentially the competitive nature of the match...?
Why are we talking about xG? Is it mentioned in the rules? Obviously its different if a team is attacking and is trying to score and gets fouled vs what happened last night, I don’t think that needs to be explained.

Clearly a lot of the views here are based on an emotional response because its Arsenal, and yeah fuck them but equally fuck things like that being called as penalties no matter who is playing.

I know we're going back a while but how did play restart that time Paulo DiCanio caught the ball when the player was injured? That for me is a "spirit of the game" decision, the one last night was Gabriel just completely fucking up and getting insanely lucky.

It's a difficult conundrum, on the one hand I'd love to see Arsenal dumped out of the Champions League in the second leg. On the other, it's not only the incentive of an extra Champions League place that wouldn't leave me too upset if the get to they get to the Semi finals.

3 days after our fixture they would be facing either Real Madrid or Man City in what would be a blockbuster of a tough fixture for them we already have Chelsea away and Liverppol away, and I don't care what form Chelsea are in, following up the NLD with those two away is a big ask, so for some parity I want them to have it as tough rather than Bournemouth at home.
Liverpool and Villa will get us that 5th place. After last night 2pts for us, one for Germans . We are dead level with Germany. Don’t expect much from Dortmund tonight.Over the last 10 years an average of 18 or more has been enough in almost every season . We need another 12 points to achieve that. Germans need 11.
Not ruling out West Ham beating Leverkusen. Leverkusen have struggled in the last 2 rounds Last min goal to get past Qarabag.
Anyway we will get 4th so who cares

Regardless of the issue of 5th place in comparison to the week of fixtures we have which includes the NLD we have a horrendously difficult fixture list compared to the Gooners that is why part of me would prefer that they have a very difficult fixture thrown in 3 days after playing us and a semi final with Man City or Real Madrid would perfectly fit the bill and give Legohead a big selection dilemma.

Fuck the spirit of the game. What kind of BS is that?
Arteta clearly cares nothing for the spirit of the game. He will cheat and take every opportunity to get a fine margin for the win. They've become horrible dark arts masters under his management, diving theatrically, playing for penalties constantly. Cheating is literally part of their ID now.

Therefore his team should pay for breaking the rules which is what they did.

It’s a part of the game full stop really. Everyone cheats just to varying degrees. One of our own players did one of the worst dives you’ll ever see this season and he wasn’t even trying to win a pen and Ange didn’t even call him out in public so we’re no different to be honest.

Bissouma? Who got second yellow and was sent off for it? Who was rightly punished and called out by fans, so Ange didn't need to call him out in public as everyone else did.

I know it's a part of the game, but it needs to piss off out of the game. Especially ones like last night where they have a go at the ref for not giving afterwards.

Yeah he got caught but that wasn’t the point I was making. On another day he might’ve got away with it (actually it was such a bad dive there was little chance of that)

who cares what the fans call out or not, I’d put a lot more weight into management and the authorities myself but as I say, it’s part of the game and I don’t think it’s going anywhere really so if you can’t beat them join them is what I say.

Just because it wasn't done in public doesn't mean Ange didn't do it behind closed doors. I don't think it matters personally, but if that's how you feel then Ange doesn't seem like the type to outright call out players in the media for things.

On the one hand, I'm not having that Gabriel thing be a penalty it's innocous as fuck.

On the other they're big fans of doing "anything to win", ie cheating, so...

But things changed after that, shit for us but everyone saw it as stupid. The handball rule is much better now, you never see those given.
You say things changed, was common sense invented after that final? By the letter of the law that was a hand ball by Gabriel last night, but the ref chose not to give it. So was the ref in the final not allowed to take a beat and think to himself "hang on it's an absolutely insane decision to give that penalty 30 seconds into the biggest club match of the season"?

It has been for ages.
Remember when Zokora dived ridiculously against (I think) Bolton?
Won us a pen iirc.
I was at that game, sat right behind the bench and staff and the 4th official came over to look at the replays on the Spurs staff laptops (they were sat in front of us). As he came over, my mate made the "dive" hand signal with a raised eyebrow and the official nodded.

Literally everyone in the ground apart from the ref saw it was a dive but it got us the goal and a point.
BMJ did call that out though, as unacceptable behaviour from a Spurs player but those days are long gone.

Yeah I imagine he did say something behind closed doors. Dont get me wrong, I’m glad he didn’t call him out in public but by the way a lot of fans go on about this and that with regards to diving you would’ve thought they’d want a manager to call it out publically to let fans know that’s not acceptable. I personally couldn’t give a shit as long as we’re clever about it and get away with it more than we get caught.

So the spirit of the game is to just ignore the rules/mistakes...

Er, ok lol

That's why it's such a stupid game to ref. You have decade after decade of situations that are supposed to be applied a certain way even the laws technically say otherwise. You have the idea of common sense/spirit of the game and all other sorts of subjective ideas that are impossible to ref equally.

They could almost do with nuking the entire laws and starting from scratch but I think to much is ingrained in football culture to change.

But I can also say I'm 99.9% sure if he actually gave the handball pen that he wouldnt do a champions league knockout match for many years (or ever again).

I mean the handball rules as it is, isn’t exactly “spirit of the game friendly”. Teams are getting penalised for ridiculous things as it is, stupidity and lack of concentration is no excuse.
