What's been our best start ever? It's always since x year. How many more wins for it to be best start to a season EVER?

Having the belief to achieve the title is one hurdle we have to show. With Ange I think we have the manager who has the confidence to lead a young group of players through the pressure and even though it was in lower quality leagues he has got a track record of winning league titles. I'm not going to read too much into that because Mourinho and Conte have a track record of winning titles including the Premier League but neither came close here. But the one takeaway is Ange isn't new to being in front of the pack and where he lacks in high level experience as those two he makes up in being the "right fit" for this club. We're not a club used to being front of the pack but we are a club used to playing on the front foot and taking risks which Ange does and they didn't.

Practically I will hold out on thinking we are in a title battle until we get through January. No Son with the Asia Cup and no Bissouma and Sarr with the Africa Cup of Nations means three key players of our starting line up are gone at the same time regardless if everyone else in the squad is fit. We'll also suffer injuries too which means we may not just have to field three players from the bench to plug those holes but elsewhere on the pitch. If we get through that within touching distance if not top then we have a good chance.

While other teams will have Europe to contend with we do not. That's not a thing to be proud of at this club but for one season as Chelsea did under Conte and as Leicester did under Ranieri we have an opportunity if all goes well of keeping the bulk of our best eleven together for one game a week. One game where they can go full throttle, the whole week in between where they get accustomed to the manager's style of football, and get plenty of recovery time.

Does anyone have that picture that was floating around here yesterday which shows our senior team, u21s and u18s all top of the league?

We've averaged 2.5 points per game so far this season. A modest 1.7 PPG for the rest of the season would have us finish on 71 points, which would have got a top 4 finish in 8 of the last 10 seasons.

It's definitely a more competitive league this year, but that just means more of the teams around us will drop points to each other. Hold our nerve when it matters and we'll finish top 4.

There are a lot of decent teams this year, but you’ll probably find a similar sentiment expressed for most seasons during the last twenty years.

I’ve often thought if I had a pound for every time someone on SC mentioned about the league being ‘really competitive this season’ I would be a very rich man.

I just want us to ensure that Arsenal don’t win the league, they’re looking decent at present and so are we. However the bottlejob comments if they win and we don’t will be incessant! I just hope we get a lot more clinical with finishing and find a way to get past these nouveau Stoke teams.

For me, it’s about getting those players that are hurt back healthy, not taking on any more bad injuries (or suspensions), and hoping we stay relevant in the table until January. If we do that, and we recruit well in January, we should be in good shape to have a great season.

January will be the key, we need to have 2 signings lined up ready to go as soon as the window opens, the squad needs a bit more depth if we are to push on and do anything this season.

The big test will be when that first defeat comes and how we react to it.

BBC article which shows how no Europe can help our league position.

It also looks at the form of all the clubs by comparing expected goal difference with actual goal difference.

City will most probably bounce back against Brighton.

But they didn't look hungry today. Its not just Rodri missing.

They've still got a sensational squad but KDB out long tern could keep things very interesting at the top

...plus City have lost the leadership / magic of Mahrez and Gundogen. That said, they still have an immense squad.

This table is excellent in giving a points breakdown for all our PL seasons. Can easily see we only need 1 point to equal our best ever start after 9 games, and 3 points in two to equal after 10 games.

One season that is a bit forgotten for me, is the 11/12 season (the year were 4th wasn't enough for CL). We've started brilliantly this season, but still would need 3 wins and 2 draws in our next five to equal the first 13 games of that season.

As their players have already won everything, some may not have the hunger and desire as previously.
