These guys get it.
First off formations are non sense as they change in offense and in defense.
Yesterday on offense we played with 3 at the back while when on defense it was damn near 5 at the back.
But offensively, where we are having problems, is nothing new.
Last year we played with a 3 at the back when going forward. Our FBs were WBs essentially. Dier dropped back helping form a back three. Dembele would drop deep to accept the ball and push it forward.
The only difference being we substituted an offensive minded person for a defensive minded person and thus we looked even more inept on the pitch. With Dele off and Wanyama on, the middle of the pitch was lost offensively. If Dele or Winks is on the pitch you see the damn near exact setup we played last year offensively.
That's one of the basic points of a 3-5-2. You need wingbacks who can get up the field, but also are willing and able to get back to cover the defensive wings. You need a well-drilled and cohesive unit, as well as the right personnel, to play 3-5-2 effectively. Luckily, we have quality in those positions that allows us to play that way when needed.
343 was actually the formation I suggested vs. Leverkusen, and I've touched upon it earlier in the season too (admittedly with a wildly different midfield four). That's the third time lately that Pochettino has read my posts. Mauricio, all you need to do is call me, you don't have to sneak around SC for my superior input.
Oh, yeah agreed and making the argument that we basically played a similar system last year when Dier dropped back to form a CB3 when we went offensive. Our FBs have been WBs for more than two years now and that didn't hinge on putting another CB in the lineup. Our FBs have been the fulcom of our attacks ever since Poch has arrived. I think we dropped another CB in there because we are out of form and missing some players.
How is it hindsight when he said that "he was thinking before today"?
At their best last season, Kane and Alli played like a strike-partnership anyway. We could play 3-5-2 and actually play with a strike partnership... *dribbles slightly*
Lloris
Dier Alderweireld Vetonghen
Walker Wanyama Eriksen (or Lamela) Dembele Rose
Kane Son (or Janssen)
I've gone all Glen Hoddle!
Underrated formation, England used it to excellent effect under Hoddle and played so cracking football and it serves Italian national team and Juventus well...
Too defensive. Not enough creativity there. Ideally you take away one of Dembele or Vic and put another playmaker on.Like the look of this team... View attachment 26708

Chelsea beat Everton 5-0 with 3 CBs, 2 FBs and Matic and Kante in front of the defence.Oh yeah because if our team wasnt defensive enough, a DM sitting in front of 3 CB's(including one DM in the 3) with full backs playing a bit higher up the pitch is truly the way to go
Just go with a 433 ffs. Stop over complicating it.
Difference is they have a world beater in Eden hazard. Costa bullying defenders where we have returning from injury striker and son who has recently been running like a headless chickenChelsea beat Everton 5-0 with 3 CBs, 2 FBs and Matic and Kante in front of the defence.
True, but they literally had 3 attacking players on the pitch and still thrashed a team, showing it isn't all about the number of defensive players.Difference is they have a world beater in Eden hazard.
