For me we need 7 players, if we want to first all challenge for anything next season. And send out a bold statement, that Harry talks about.

First of all we need Centre back, too many times this season, our injuries with the centre backs haven’t helped, with them all being injured at some point this season for a period of time. It will help getting Caulker back from Swansea, but we need someone with experience, as we cant rely in my opinion on King and Gallas for another season. Vertonghen who has been linked would do very well at spurs, but it would seen whether we could fend off interest from other clubs for him, even with him admitting he would favor spurs. Other possible alternatives would be Montpeiller defender Yanga-M’Biwa.

Then we need cover for BAE and Walker, with both being established, we need someone who could cover, or be used effectively in rotation, as in my opinion Naughton and Rose arent good enough. Vrsaljko would be my choice for Walker, young RB who has huge potential, and wont cost a fortune. But for the left there isn’t many alternatives out there.

Centre midfield we are grand, with Huddlestone coming back we have enough options in their but we could be doing with a bit more creativity. Id like to have seen us signing Defour or Wistel last season, but with them joining Porto and Benfica its unlikely they would move again.

This season we seen the problems with playing without Lennon or Bale, and how badly that affected us. We need cover for these, my choices would be Belhanda, who can cover left or right but plays on the left for Montpellier. And for the right Junior Hoilett, who looks like a real talent and would be a free signing.

Finally we need to sort out the striking option, we currently only have one striker on the books, and id happily get rid of him. For me id look to get in three from De Jong, Giroud, Remy, Adebayor, Bas Dost, van wolfswinkel or a player we should try heaven and earth for soldado given Valencia Financial problems.

Vertonghen in as one of our 4 CBs. Soldado replaces Defoe. Lloris as GK. Ade or another similar target man CF.

That would be a stunning summer for me. Anything more than that would be almost life-changing in its awesomeness. Like, a T-Rex piloting an F-22 Raptor awesome.

Vertognehn, Leandro, Adebayor and Lloris/Krul/Any yong keeper.

Then should we manage to clear out: Bentley, dos Santos, Pienaar, a back up RW would be required, Hoilett perhaps on a free.

Without trying to have a pop at you Luptic, how many more threads on this subject do we actually need?!

We all know we need a CB, which looks like being Vertonghen (or Vert's as i'm affectionately calling him) and a couple of strikers - who they will be is just open to speculation but I don't think a separate thread is required for each person's wish-lists.

I honestly believe that with just the addition of a proper CF to lead our line we could push both Utd and City closer next season. Dont get me wrong, Adebayor has been very good overall. But against Villa, if we had a truly world class CF leading our line, we would have won that game. There is no way that someone of the ilk of say Shearer would have left that field having not converted one of our 40+ crosses, 19 corners and 20 shots. Imagine Shearer or Les Ferdinand on the end of them. Llorente is the obvious candidate, but too expensive we are told.
I dont have the answer, but it is imperative we find someone who can convert those chances. Remy has scored a few headers this season from the highlights I have seen. Maybe he is the answer. Or Huntelaar, or Cavani, or Giroud, or Doumbia or nameless others that have been mentioned on here.

Maximise the potential of Caulker, Naughton, Bassong, Pienaar, Townsend, Krankie, with the returning Dawson and Huddlestone, and all we are really crying out for is a CF.

However, if given the choice, I'll have Lloris, Vertonghen, Baines, Hazard & Llorente, and throw in Hoilett for free or Victor Mosses to keep our home grown quota up.

I think these players should definitely be in our squad next season:

GK: Friedel
RB: Walker, Naughton
LB: Ekotto, Rose
CB: Dawson, Caulker Kaboul
RM: Lennon
LM: Bale
CM: Parker, Sandro, Modric, Huddlestone, Livermore
AM: VdV

Working on the rough assumption of at least two players per position, to me that means we need:

  1. Goalkeeper
  2. Centre Back
  3. Right winger
  4. Left winger
  5. Back up Rafa
  6. Striker x 2
Obviously we might decide that some of our current squad (Defoe, Kranjcar, Bassong, Townsend etc) can fill some of those positions, and we may decide that other areas (Rose, Huddlestone, Dawson etc) can be upgraded but that starts to seem like alot of transfer activity for one summer.

7 players in is complete madness - we have tried the wholesale chanegs approach under Arnesen and Comolli and it didn't work.

If we hold onto both Modric and Bale ( unlikey to keep both IMO ) then we need just 4 in max , CB - Vertonghen, GK - Krul / Vorm, and 2 forwards / attacking midfilders ( Abebayor ? Hazard ? Luuk De Jong ? Huntelaar ? Leandro ? Lewandowski ? )

I only want to see players coming in that are of the quality to start , no more squad fillers or buys just for the shake of it to give Harry and the fans a fix

Agree...and also agree with Wirral Spurs:
Christian Erikssen in, replacing Modric if he leaves.

Also Bring back Naughton & Caulker.

I love the idea that we could have a back up, world class, playmaking type sitting on our bench. It's a beautiful concept, but we can't even manage a back up right back.

It's not about wholesale changes, it's about ensuring that the squad as a whole is strong rather than just the first XI. People have criticised Harry for not rotating this season but really our subs aren't nearly as strong as our 'first team' so you can kind of see his point. If there were better options in the squad we wouldn't have to plough on week in week out with the same first XI hoping that they don't get tired.

Yes there will be core players (Kaboul, Sandro, Bale, Modric and VdV) but if they play every week they'll get tired/injured so we need decent alternatives...i.e. better than the current options of Nelsen, Livermore, Kranjcar, Huddlestone and Defoe. If you look at United, City and Chelsea they are relatively comfortable bringing in any of their 'squad players' as the quality doesn't significantly drop. We're not there yet and I think we'd need quite a large change in certain areas of the squad to get there.

For what it's worth I don't think we'll bring in 7 players or sell all of the players we'd probably want to. But there's no harm in trying.

Yeah obviously that's the wrong terminology. We shouldn't really have any players who are happy to be a 'backup'. Alternative Rafa may be the better wording.

Of course a big part of the problem will again be that we've got a large number of players we are likely to need to move on. Personally I wouldn't be sad to see all of the below leave:

Cudicini, Gomes, Corluka, Nelsen, Kranjcar, Bentley, Jenas, Dos Santos, Defoe and Saha, and that's before you get to the other possible departures (Gallas, King (hopefully not), Huddlestone, Pienaar, Townsend).

I really don't know how we'll go about shifting that lot.

Doesn't matter how you phrase it, chances of having an understudy Rafa are very slim.
