In 1951 my dad took me to two games 3-2 Villa and 2-1 Chelsea and being only seven years of age I was very naive lots of people used to take milk or beer crates for their children to stand on . The first game I never saw anything except the odd players legs but the second game we was at the front of the shelf in my view the best place to watch football in the world .
I dont remember if he played but I do remember people going on about " the Duke " I found out much later it was Len Dequemin .
I said to my Dad why have we got someone from the royal family playing for us as i said naive .
He said he was the " duke of Kent " and I went around thinking we had the Duke of Kent playing for us .
Little did I know in them days if someone said have you paid the Duke they Meant have you " paid the Duke of Kent " in the slang meaning have you paid the rent . Being a common expression I thought spurs fans were paying the "Duke " to play .
Can you imagine today trying to get into the ground with a beer or milk crate .
What must be remembered is in those days unless you went to a match the only way you could know what went on in a game was read the next days newspapers . This has nothing to do with my anecdote but just to let you know how little we all knew really .
