Obviously I wanted Nusa because he’s a huge talent but just as important to me was the fact we were finally getting a wide player of the perfect type.

That is where my frustration lies even more so than missing out on the individual. I just pray we have alternatives lined up who also fit the profile perfectly (so not Rowe etc).

It feels like we are cursed not to sign a quality wide player. We haven’t had one since Bale and Lennon (Son is more of an inside forward and whilst perfect doesn’t really suit the wide player role in this team now. He’s also going to be 32).

Spurs so often come up short by 1/2 players and I really think the attack is the clear area letting down the squad at the moment. I just pray we have some quality names lined up like Nico Williams, Savio etc for LW, or Bakayoko, Neto, Olise etc for RW.

I am 100% convinced getting the wide positions correct will unlock another level for our team and without getting it right we will hit a ceiling we can’t get past.

The problem is that he is arguably the best young player out there in the left wing position that is not already in a CL level team.

We don't have any history of being able to get that level of player to sign for us.

We regularly have to catch them when they are younger, which is why missing out on Nusa is a blow IMO.
He might not be in a CL team but he's at Bilbao who are probably the toughest team to buy young players from due to the self imposed restrictions

Admittedly, I found the Nusa move a bit of a weird one. If we were looking to develop a long term replacement for Son then that makes sense but in the short term we seem stacked in that LWF position with Son, Solomon, Werner, Gil and possible youth options like Santiago.

My thoughts as well. Really think that's the level we should be striving for in those positions now. I think we already have enough of the sort of medium/prospect level of players there currently, in all respect.

At the time, I'd argue we were able to do that for Ndombele.

I agree on Nusa though - really the best time to have tried to sign Williams was last summer.

I’m not buying into going to Brentford for playing time. Seems a line spun by his camp.

Why would you not choose to play for Spurs over Brentford? Ones competing to get back into the CL or could be in it next season, playing, exciting attacking football, playing to your strengths. The other could well be dragged into a relegation scrap if, hardly a chance to showcase your talents?

Surely as a pro you would back yourself to get into this attacking line up? Look how Johnson has had an opportunity and is being played through his bad spell, granted down to lack of alternatives, but we always seem to be short / have injuries every season. There’s also a clear long term pathway to replace Son.

I think POK is right, we were interested, just not interested enough to get into a bidding war.
For exactly the same reason the likes of Bale and Dele rejected higher profile clubs to join us.

They backed themselves to play week in week out, and they were proved right.

Fact is, we are not an attractive club for up and coming players right now, hell, just look at the number of our own academy players who have left because there is no pathway to the first team.

If we cannot convince our own youngsters who are already here, it's easy to see why a player like Nusa would back himself to play elsewhere in the Premier League right now rather than little but a possibility with us in the future.

He turned Chelsea down in the summer, I'd assume for exactly the same reason.

If you are young player, with the world at your feet: we are simply not the club for you.

It does seem to changing, there does seem to be a shift in approach in terms of recruitment but it is yet to be seen if that change in approach is replicated in selection for the first team.

Oh well. Smacks of someone convinced they’re going to tear it up in the PL and then agitate for a big ticket move. Not really the kind of mindset we’re looking for, IMHO.

Yeah, he and his team were clearly viewing us as a stepping stone

Have you all not read WLB’s latest, which says the players camp have told Spurs it’s not agreed yet? He may yet go to Brentford but too soon right now to write him off for his mentality.

It sounds to me like Brugge got a deal they wanted with Brentford, the player isn’t sure, but Brugge leaked otherwise expecting us to match. We haven’t. Now the player has got word back to us that he’s not agreed to go to Brentford. All very interesting, looking forward to the next few days.

Oh well. His choice and makes sense. There'll be other youngsters out there like Sarr and Ugodie who will back themselves to get playing time at a bigger club like ours who we can go after.

He gets more game time at Brentford and perhaps a reasonable release fee if he succeeds. It makes sense, really, especially if he is aiming for the likes of Madrid in the future, etc.

He can just as easily come to us (which is a bigger step up than Brentford) and get lost. He is still a kid, after all.

Well I hope we will be targetting Johan Bakayoko then. There arent many wide players around that are good at dribbling, scoring and assisting so I hope we actually make a move for one.

It seems very odd that we've been hearing all through negotiations that Nusa wanted to go back on loan to Brugge to continue his development and now all of a sudden he's happy to move straight to Brentford even though he's possibly not ready for it

Quality attacking players seems to be a tricky market, I do think we need to target a higher level of player, someone who makes more of an immediate impact.
