They missed out on top 4 by a gnat's eyelash - think some of you writing them off completely are being a bit premature.

I'll keep my powder dry and see how it goes and at this moment I feel it's 50/50 for Arteta. If his signings gel and he does indeed have a master plan then they should be competitive. If however, the signings don't work then their heads could drop and it could be a tough season.

I honestly cannot stand them, never have but this Summer it is even worse, the amount of helmets posting delusional shite about them but what is worse is gooners i know in real life are even talking absolute shite too.

i hope they nause it all up again.
It's really quite difficult to get my head around.

Most fans who had just seen their team blow a top 4 race and capitulate, let's call it for what it was, would go quiet and into hiding. But their fans have done the opposite, it's almost as if they actually did achieve top 4.

I remember when we missed out on top 4 back in 2013 and I don't recall our fans getting cocky and having this feeling of arrogance, especially as we'd sold Bale.

I remember being quite nervous about that following season.

They did but us and United were a disaster for periods of the season.

Neither of us will be thta bad this year.

And they still capitulated when things got tough

would any of the signings they've made prevent them from losing the two games away vs us and Newcastle when they were completely overpowered?

I would argue yes, they've improved their depth. Instead of Tavares, Elneny and Nketiah, they'd play Jesus, Zinchenko etc – and I imagine they're still keen on adding a CM (hence links with Tielemans still). Saliba looks a real prospect so they won't be relying on Rob Holding in key NLDs as well.

I see your point. Their defence actually looks fine to me. But is it not still a very lightweight midfield and attack?

That's the key question again. They'll be able to field stronger teams (which they'll need with the added European fixtures), but they're still prioritising technical quality. Whether it's too lightweight will become apparent again this season but I'd expect them, on paper, to have surpassed Chelsea this window. And who knows what we'll get with Utd.

They had no European football, postponed games when they had zero covid cases and played Leeds who had half the squad missing. Yet they still ballsed it up.

Madness they have backed him again, they are spending for CL, if they don't get CL next season they could be having a fire sale to get their financials in order. I really don't see how Arteta can survive another season if they fail to get top 4.

That’s kind of countered by the fact they’ve got midweek games to deal with now. And you still have their weak mentality and poor leadership from Arteta.

It really is make or break for him this year though. It’ll be interesting to see if he can improve them or if they plateau despite spending a fortune this summer on a couple of Man City cast offs and a youngster from Portugal.

Yeah, they touched on this on The Fighting Cock this week. We should be buzzing but there’s a nagging feeling of “what’s going to go wrong”, whereas Arsenal fans seem the opposite. Then you factor in their easy first few fixtures.

It is almost like they’ve convinced themselves they didn’t bottle fourth and have champions league next season. I'm half expecting to see footage online of their fans turning up on wednesday nights expecting to be let into the ground for a competition they aren't even in!

Agree entirely this is massive for them. They've spent big again and will be expected to make CL.

Part I've bolded I think is the key part, especially since they'll potentially have to do like Man U did a couple years back and essentially decide if their best bet for CL is via the Europa League or going for top 4.

I think the thing last year 'exposed' with them that I don't think they've properly addressed is they don't have the deepest of squads. Strikers wise, they've let two go and got two in but none of them are prolific. So having them have to go the whole season in multiple tournaments? I just don't see it.

Their defence is alright but again, the their bench/2nd team seems to be pretty weak. They're a bit like we have been in that they're an injury or two away from being totally screwed over. And whilst Zinchenko and Jesus do help a little... they did lose Aubameyang and Laccazette and still have deadwood like Pepe and don't look like they're adding any strength to their midfield or any real leaders to the team.

they're overcompensating as usual because they're in denial. they've a fairly easy start so will be up there for the first month or so but should implode over sept/oct.

let them big up their dreams, makes it all the sweeter when it inevitably comes crashing down because no matter who they sign, they still have a weak mentality and arteta.

Make or break for Arteta I think this season. Fair fucks to Arsenal, they've backed their man both in shipping players out as well as the new guys in.
Yeah big time. I still think with their fixtures they will have a positive start to the season. When we reach closer to world cup and they have Thursday nights and domestic cups starting we will find out what they are really made of

They have a lot of AMs, but particularly defensively they have a thin squad.

Yeah only have to look at the Nuno days and how we were before adding Kulusevski and Bentancur.

On paper both us and United are much stronger.

Their problem is CM, cannot fathom why they haven’t signed a proper one. Until they do they will struggle to compete in the big games, same as united.

There’s not many really good ones out there. Bissouma would have been ideal for them, but they couldn’t compete with us for him. Phillips might have also been a good fit, but he’s gone to City.

I think Elneny, and Xhaka did ok for them at times last season, they aren’t world beaters, but they aren’t bad enough that just anyone is an improvement on them either.

I think they are a decent side, and they’ll beat most of the lower positions in the coming season, but they’ll struggle in big games and with the added pressure of Europe. I think Arteta is a lightweight coach, he can’t handle the big players. So as a result he has built a team of lightweights, he’s got rid of anyone who is difficult to manage and brought in “good boys” who don’t whine and moan behind the scenes like Jesus and Zinchenko, reserve players at City who lets face it were happy being reserve players. I’d bet that if City hadnt made it clear they wanted them moved on, they’d have both happily signed new deals and stayed on the bench.

He’s a pound shop Pep who can only work with pound shop mentalities.
