An interesting article posted up on yahoo (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/01052012/58/liga-barcelona-world-best-paid-players.html)

Our average weekly player wages are reportedly £44,394, with City, Chelsea, United, Scum, liverpool and villa all playing more than us.
Liga - Barcelona are world's best-paid players
Tue, 01 May 15:32:00 2012
Barcelona's superstars might be coming to terms with finishing the season empty-handed, but their beleaguered players can at least comfort themselves with the knowledge that they are the best-paid team on the planet.

According to new figures collated by the highly-respected industry analysts Sporting Intelligence, Barcelona's first team squad earn an average of £101,160 a week - that's over £10,000 a week more than at any other club, playing any sport, anywhere in the world.
Second on the list is Real Madrid, whose players are far behind on a meagre £90,859 each, while Manchester City (£86,280) and Chelsea (£79,197) occupy third and fourth spots on the list.
Basketball's LA Lakers are the best-paid non-footballers, squeezing in at fifth with £73,612.
Baseball's New York Yankees are sixth (£72,093) despite having the world's best-paid team sportsman, Alex Rodriguez, on their books picking up a whopping £384,615 a week. The Yankees were number one when the list was originally published two years ago, but since then wages have been restricted across the Atlantic while in Europe the amounts demanded by top players has continued to rise.
Manchester United are just outside the top 10, with first team players pocketing an average of £63,514, while Arsenal (£61,532) are 16th and Liverpool (£60,954) are 18th.
The only other Premier League teams in the top 100 are Aston Villa at 41st (£47,401) and Tottenham at 51st (£44,394).
The report's authors claim that UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations are yet to make any serious impact at top clubs - and that they almost certainly never will.
"It is possible but by no means certain that some wage restraint at some European football clubs is on the horizon as a result of new 'Financial Fair Play' rules being introduced by UEFA (…) but the effectiveness of UEFA's policing remains to be seen.
"And in any case, the biggest, richest clubs will almost certainly continue to generate massive sums, and therefore continue to fund growing salary bills."

Despite basketball mustering just two teams in the top dozen, the NBA is the best-paid (and most evenly-paid) league in the world with first team stars pocketing an average of £50,883. Even the worst-paid NBA team, the Indiana Pacers, pick up an average of £39,334 a week.
By contrast, Spain's La Liga is completely skewed towards the top end. Barcelona's players earn more than 22 times what the lowest-paying teams in the Spanish top flight earn.

Villa still pay more than us...

Crash and burn unless they sort that out... pronto.
More importantly - WTF. Just have a quick gander at their squad. Anyone other than Given earning more than about 2K a week are making out like bandits. They're all horribly average.

Would imagine the likes of Bent, Dunne, Agbonlahor and N'Zogbia are on decent money but you're quite right and surprised someone as prudent as Lerner would allow this.

 a Leeds in the making if they don't pull their finger out - IMO.

Perhaps I should say Forest. Midlands club with history, but if they go down, it could be a slippery slope...

Would have liked to have seen another column there listing the number of players per squad to show not only the difference in average wage but the difference in overall wages spent per season.

It's shocking isn't it. Given and the names listed above are all decent enough players. Earning an average of over 45K is still a little suprising. But when their likely higher wages are offset by the rest - good God almighty. Fire sale coming up maybe.

Looking at their squad, I'm actually surprised that I didn't expect them to be quite so near to the bottom three before the season started. Thought they'd be around 9th to maybe 12th or 13th at worst. It's just awful.

Would be interesting to see what kind of an effect bonus related payments would have on that table

They have a lot of promising youngsters in the side who I think would stay and shine in the Championship if they went down, so I don't think Villa's long-term situation is as bleak as a lot of others do. I think that, like Newcastle, they could really benefit from going down, clearing out the overpriced dross and starting over. But like you, I never thought they'd be this close to going down, and like you I didn't pay close enough attention to their squad before I made my predictions.

We'd probably move up quite a bit compared to the other prem teams. Did most of, if not all, the money we got from CL participation get eaten up sharpish by the jump in wage bonuses the players received?

Unlike the assnals, Yanited, chelsea, citeh etc we can't guarantee them ridiculous basic wages. I'm not sure, even if we get our stadium built etc, we should either. Pay top players top money but don't become like assnal where a Rosciky, who has been crap for the last 3 seasons save the last couple of months, twiddle their thumbs earning 80K a week.

The NBA has 20 teams bleeding money. 2/3rds of their franchises are unsustainable. And yet they pay those kind of wages.

We pay the 15th best wages in the world and still have trouble attracting players. Holy shit.

On that list, Liverpool and the Red Sox are 19th and 20th. Isn't that an odd coincidence.

You're quite right. They could, and likely would thanks to the parachute payment and a mahoosive stadium by cham standards, power their way straight back up. Long-term - could be the making of them.

There's always that danger though isn't there. What if they fail to bounce straight back up.

Oh God, I just had a flashback to last flirtation with relegation.

You have to admire Levy.
You do have to admire Levy. Because all of those teams have bigger stadiums, more resources (other than Villa) than us. Yet we are still in 4th place in the premier league. Paying the wages for a team that is 7th in the wages league table.

Perhaps we are punching above our weight? But we have assembled a first team/squad that on its day can match anyone in the PL, and are not killing ourselves financially by doing so. It really is quite remarkable.

You gotta fear for Villa though. They really were once a true big club in England, similar to us, and look how far they have fallen. I know we moan about Harry, don't get me wrong, I do aswell, and the mistakes that he has made are shocking, but Villa fans must be so jealous of where we are, and what we are doing on the budgets that we restrict ourselves to.
